I appreciate your referring to the "Byzantine Empire" as Roman, which is exactly how they saw themselves. Heraclius' defeat of the Persians rapidly followed by defeat by the Arab Muslims has always makes me think of Harald Godwinson's defeat of the Vikings in northern England followed by his army's forced march to defeat by William the Conqueror's. Winning 2 sequential battles defending territory against separate, strong foes is an exhausting, improbable outcome. Similar to any 2 front war (e.g., Nazi Germany against the West & the Russians) but happening quickly.
