What he says about Jiren in FighterZ, I've seen that before. There used to be a cool game called "Marvel: Avengers Alliance", which was a Facebook turn-based rpg game, and before each fight, you'd have to pick 2 characters for your team on top of your Agent who was a custom character. Doctor Doom was an obtainable character, and if you picked him, he had a default passive called "There is only Doom!", which gave him more health, two turns per round and made you unable to pick any other character, so it'd only be the Agent and him.

They also have this kind of mechanic for at least the BaseGoku and GT Goku characters in DBFZ. Their Super moves become more powerful as you lose more teammates. That could maybe work for Jiren too but making him just 1 character would probably make him quite bad to win with.

The Samurai Shodown fighting game series had a spin-off JRPG released in the late 90s that retold the story of the first two fighting games. The RPG let you pick from six possible "main" characters, and then during the game you could recruit other characters to fill your two empty party slots. Except for Genjuro. If you played as Genjuro, then you couldn't/wouldn't recruit any party members in the first storyline and has only one story-mandatory partner in the second storyline. The compensation is that Genjuro gets higher stats.

Also, a few team fighting games give you the option to use fewer characters for some form of compensation. Capcom vs SNK's ratio system gave you four "slots" to allocate your team, but individual characters could cost anywhere from 1 to 4 slots. While not quite being "solo", King of Fighters 2001 gave your four slots to allocate to either playable characters or support striker; you could choose to play with a single character (with boosted stats) that could call in three assisting strikers.

Bulma's whole family is named after underwear, the Saiyans are all vegetable names, Coola and Frieza are named for appliances, the Ginyu force is simultaneously a Super Sentai reference and a bunch of dairy products, Piccolo had a bunch of minions named after different instruments back when he was a villain, Majin Buu was a Disney's Cinderella joke (he was created by Bibbidi and Bobbidi)... essentially the entirety of Dragon Ball is a mass of goofy shit and puns with occasional punching. Honestly, I'd be surprised if Toriyama hadn't considered using those exact names for either additional Frieza relatives or for some kind of opposing race of grill/heater/oven based gags.

I don't agree with Goku winning a fight against time manipulation, but it follows a pattern or method. Jiren beat Hit by...staring at him. He...glared...really hard or something, and broke through being *frozen in TIME* Nothing in the world can convince me that wasn't absolutely braindead writing.

There's a lot of idiotic eliminations in the tournament (piccolo for example). If you wanted to be mad at jiren you should've used the argument that he wasn't proactive whatsoever despite all his power and the stakes, instead of saying he made a different character look bad. (Tho if he was proactive the writers would've wrote themselves into a corner) I hate to say it but the way jiren broke out of the time cage is consistent within the series so i cannot entirely have it be toei's fault. Time and time again if you're significantly stronger than someone, you can overpower their haxes; nappa can swat away chiaotzu's paralysis, broly can reverse the god bind onto goku, and even goku himself can overpower the timeskip by just powering up (ep 39 & ep 72). Jiren didn't do anything different, the issue was hit just didn't do much of anything in the tournament which is why his loss felt crushing

Even if they don't know it, they subconsciously feel that way. Even to an animated character. You don't feel that way with other characters because their trauma is crazy, but ridiculous and you could probably never even come close to understanding it so you're mind just blocks it out. Or like I said before, not other reason is needed other than showing those few flashbacks, because it's a simple reason yea, but a good one. Great characters have done more for less. Hell Goku's is even more simple. He just wants a good fight and to be better than he was before. Yea we've lived with him. But it's an even more stupid reason than jirens to gain power.

This is and remains a story and you NEED to work with your characters, especially with those as big as Jiren is in the tournament Having a character come out as incredibly strong out of nowhere, have no personality and a horribly told story is the result of terrible writing. Because of this Jiren suffers as one of the worst characters in DB canon (even including GT) His story is a simple cliché because nothing else was shown, leaving the bare bones of "he suffered and decided to because strong" which comes off as incredibly generic... because it is, and since there is nothing to cover it up or that is distinctive about Jiren in the first place outside his Strength (which again, is not really justified in the story and is tied to one of the problems in DB as a series) he falls super flat. Think about the 3 best known villains in DBZ: Freeza, Cell and Boo. Neither really has any sort of tragic story, or reason to be evil. They don't have that, however they steal the show in every pannel/scene they are in. Why? Because they are interesting and charismatic characters that bounce well with the cast. People were hoping Jiren's backstory would make him interesting, because he inherently isn't, even simply by his design. People were shitting on him long before his past was shown, and that terribly told backstory was just the icing on this cake made of turds. I legitimately don't dislike Jiren as much as these comments make it out to be, but he is easily a terribly written character that fundamentally doesn't work and doesn't belong written like this in Dragon Ball, a story which just isn't and wasn't simply about fighting

The whole plot of Jiren vs everyone was literally that even though he is good he would unknowingly sacrifice everyone in the universe for his wish for his family and master to be revived. If someone didn’t wish for the revival of the other universes they were going to erase all of the universes in the tournament and that’s why jiren wasn’t allowed to win.

Personally I have been very apathetic towards him from the start, even considering the fact he was so unexplainably strong, maybe even more so because of it. Given the level DBS has reached in terms of strength, the excuse of "other universes, you'll probably find someone stronger than our characters" excuse doesn't hold up, especially since it is implied that Jiren became as strong as he is mostly on his own It's the same thing that Freeza did, he trained 4 months and he was back on top, which is just lazy writing at its finest: "I can't make them stronger in a more legitimate way, so how about they just get strong because of dumb excuses?" The terribly written backstory was just the icing on the cake. It's not bad that it is generic, but how awfully told it is That kind of trauma of losing everyone twice should be the starting point or the middle part at worse in a backstory, not the final point. Why should I care about Jiren's situation if I have nothing to hold on and sympatize or have pity for his situations? There were infinite ways to make him work, but they decided to stay silent for too long, gave him no personality to make him interesting in the meanwhile and then gave him a sentence worth backstory "He lost everyone twice and decided to become strong" without any visuals to support it or expressed how he felt at the time
