What a terrible tragedy, however this new memorial is a valuable reminder of a great man who served the community of Caterham and has given new life to a an important structure which did the same! Thank you very much for sharing this sad but important tale.

@edwardkingthompson Thank you for watching, Edward. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I think reusing the pillbox in this way is a great idea, and it might indeed help its own preservation, too. 👍

Thank you so much for sharing this interesting video. I live on Tillingdown Hill and remember the shooting of the policemen on that fateful day. I hadn’t realised that the pillbox had been spruced up with the memorial plaque added for the murdered police officer. May he rest in peace. 🙏🏻

@christmascarol87 How amazing that you should live so close to this structure! That's wonderful! Next time you go past it, you can scan the QR code on the memorial to read more. Please subscribe to the channel if you haven't already done so. You'll find a lot of history videos in and around the Caterham area. My next film, which I'm editing at the moment, will also be from Caterham! Thank you again for watching and commenting. 🙂

@christmascarol87 Oh, that's lovely, and very kind of you. As I've already mentioned, all thoughts and comments are always greatly appreciated. I filmed my next video last Saturday, and it's at a historic Caterham location that you're sure to know very well! 😀

Very nice share 👍 I think that was definitely a pillbox defense the top doesn’t look thick enough for a air raid shelter (but would do in a pinch) better than nothing 👍 rest in peace the the officer. 🙏 A British officer I’m researching in an officer named Kidd he was murdered in 1895, I came across his story on findagrave but I couldn’t locate his resting place.

@cemeteryvisits Thank you for watching, Jim. I posted a photograph of P.C. Schofield's funeral on my related post. He had a service at a Caterham church with a police honour guard and was then taken for cremation. I hope you're successful in your research for Kidd. Cremation was far less common in 1895, so you might yet get lucky.

Great commentary and research Andy👍Unfortunately if I was to cover the murder of a police officer over here,I would be recording very many videos as there were 314 killed and over 9000 injured during the troubles.I did cover however the youngest one to be killed though. His name was Stuart John Montgomery and he was only 18 years of age.Stuart was murdered in 1981😞On a more brighter note,I think anyway, they have just exploded a WW2 bomb over here that was found a few days ago in Newtownards😮

@markporter-thechurchhistor6784 Thank you for watching, Mark. Sometimes, we forget just how dangerous policing in Northern Ireland has been over the years. That World War II bomb, however, sounds quite a story. I don't think they will ever stop popping up occasionally.

I was 16 in 1974, but even so I had totally forgotten this tragedy. In those days, as you know, the police were generally only issued with truncheons which were pretty useless against a man with a gun. Thank you for you very concise narration. You mention RAF Kenley. I wonder if you have seen the Pathe film which show Hurricanes and Spitfires operating from it during the War? If you haven’t, or for any other interested viewers, I’ve posted a link below. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHjSfIJpedJ-e9U

@markshrimpton3138 Thank you very much indeed for watching and commenting, Mark. I've made a number of videos with links to R.A.F Kenley (pilot stories, lost sites, etc), but I've never seen the footage that you've sent the link to before. Many thanks for that. It's a great piece of film, and I'll share it out to my other subscribers. 👍🙂

@@pooooornopigeon Thanks for watching, Michael. I don't know why he was carrying a gun and acting suspiciously at the time of the incident. However, he was apparently a Hitler fantastic, with a hatred for authority. The police car was sadly in the wrong place at the wrong time.
