THE WATCHER IDENTITY REVEALED? | The Chosen Season 5

Dallas Jenkins may have just spoiled the identity of the Watcher in his latest Instagram post. Who is The Watcher in the Chosen Season 5? Watch till the end to hear my theory!
The Watcher was introduced at the end of The Chosen Season 4 starring Jonathan Roumie as Jesus during the resurrection of Lazarus. The Watcher will return in The Chosen Season 5, possibly in episode 1 or episode 2.

Yes I think Mark is the Watcher. As soon as I saw the stylus and tablet in his hands it dawned on me. Mark was essentially a boy, and the actor playing the role has a few more years on him than what I’ve imagined Mark to be.

Interesting conclusion, the only thing I’d point out is the box he is holding isn’t a box. It’s a wax tablet. Paper was really expensive and didn’t travel well, so they would carry these tablets with cold wax in them, which they would then carve into the wax. When the message or writing was transferred, they’d reheat the wax and start fresh. You can actually see Matthew carrying one in a few of the episodes as well.

I'm thinking the man could possibly be Zacchaeus. Because the writing tablet thing could hint that he's a tax collector, because Matthew had the same thing. Also the fact that he was wearing a covering on his head could mean that he's possibly hiding himself from the crowds.

The story of Zacchaeus takes place in Jericho, before Jesus arrives in Jerusalem. Season 5 is about what happens after Jesus has already arrived in Jerusalem. So any story that comes before that and that they didn't show, they won't show anymore, examples: Zacchaeus, Bartimaeus, Legion, Transfiguration and Widow of Naim.

I would love to see Zacchaeus in The Chosen but unfortunately I think The Chosen just didn’t do him because he’s very similar to Matthew. Not to say he can’t show up later though.

Great guess, though I don’t think it’s correct. I’ll talk about it on stream tonight, but there are a few things in that point in a different direction when it comes to Mark. We’ve actually seen Mark in the BTS almost certainly.

Newer hypothesis is convincing. I have always thought of Mark as being younger, due to his apprentice-type relationship with Barnabas and Paul. The watcher as Paul seems to make more sense, but I think it would be distracting to introduce him so early in the narrative.

I think if it was him, he wouldn’t hide. I don’t think he believed Jesus was the Son of God at the time and probably would have thought he was just there to mourn for Lazarus.

It is clear from Lukes Gospel that the last supper was in the Essene quarter of Jerusalem. Mark was not associated with the Essenes.

I said on the chosen slueth when that scene was shot I believed it to be Luke, because of Lukes declaration of understanding from the begining and I still believe it, it would be a natural hedgeway into the book of acts, just seemed like what Dallas would do.

I love The Chosen Sleuth too! We do know that Luke is a Gentile from Colossians 4:11-14, as he was not listed among those who were Jews and seems to join Paul around Acts 16, but he could have believed earlier. I interpret Luke 1:1-4 as he wasn't an eyewitness, but collected accounts from eyewitnesses to write his Gospel, but I could be wrong though. Thanks for watching!

Awesome! Yeah the odd thing is that Matthias should be in The Chosen already, since it says in Acts 1 that he had been with the disciples since the baptism of John. But we’ll see what they do with him.

Something I'd like to point out, the boy who gave the apostles the bread and fish for the feeding of the five thousand was named Mark, and both the boy and the Gospel author have hellenistic backgrounds. Maybe that boy was the Mark? I like to think the Watcher is Luke.

Interesting idea! His name was Telemachus, but the Chosen does seem to sometimes give characters fake names that are actually Biblical characters, so I could see that as a possibly. Thanks for watching!

@@jillhumphrys9349 Good point haha. The passage in Mark 14:51-52 describes him as a young man, so that is open to interpretation, however, if the Lord's Supper will be hosted at Mark's house in Jerusalem, it's probably not the same character since Telemachus lives in the Decapolis area.

John Mark wrote his Gospel from the stories told him by Peter. As far as I am aware he doesn't come along until after Jesus ascended, and therefore is not an eyewitness.

A lot of scholars think Mark’s Gospel was the first to be written and that he was the young man in Mark 14. Truthfully we just don’t know for sure either way.

I like this proposal. One thing that makes me hesitant about that, though, is that The Watcher looks more Roman, or at least non-Jewish to me. And The Chosen seems to at least try to have first century Jewish characters look ethnically similar to what first century Jewish people may have looked like.

People also aren’t sure if Mark was Jewish or not. His name isn’t a Jewish name but many historians think he was an eyewitness. So he might be a Roman citizen living in Judea.

@@YHBChosen After sitting with this, I think you're probably correct about who The Watcher is. The stylus is strong evidence. I had heard Mark linked to Peter in the past, so I just read up about that. It looks like the consensus is that Mark is Jewish, His name JOHN Mark is evidence of that. Also, it looks like second century Christian leaders like Clement and Irenaeus pointed to Mark's gospel being based largely on Peter's testimony, and that Mark became Peter's scribe. I wonder if that will eventually be shown if they do a series on Acts.

If you mean The Watcher, we don’t know yet. We know lots of people watched the miracles Jesus did, we just aren’t sure who this character is yet. If you mean Mark, yes, all of the verses I used in this video are from Scripture.

I personally think it could be one of Jesus's brothers who had to be curious about what was happening with Jesus. Two of them later became writers in the New Testament. I think that is why he is hiding, because Jesus and Mary would recognize him if they saw him.

@@YHBChosen In the episode where Jesus goes to Nazareth and asks where James and Jude were and Mary kind of made excuses for them and says you know how they feel about that kind of thing, referring to people being excited about Jesus's visit, and it seems that I learned somewhere during the years that his brothers were not real believers when Jesus was younger, but later became believers and even apostles after his death. That's why I think the watcher might want to be hidden, so Jesus and Mary didn't know he was showing an interest. I'm probably wrong, but... time will tell! It's a great show, isn't it?

I guess everybody has their pet theory. Me? I would love to see the thief on the cross ahead of his appearance in the gospel. I always wonder could he have made that confession to Jesus without witnessing any of Jesus’ miracles? With God anything is possible, but perhaps like the two hitmen in “Pulp Fiction” one witnessed something that he allowed to change him, and the other did not. may have been in custody already in reality or note may have seen something of Jesus ahead of being “caught” for whatever crime

I meant whoever whatever Paul’s name was before he was Paul the one who was hunting the Jews perhaps not at the time him to have such a burning desire to hate. They all did go to school to become whatever was their destiny. But as they were young, doesn’t mean they weren’t curious and therefore often times did go over one should not be seen.

Do some digging like The Chosen Sleuth has, we already know who Mark is in the show, it's another guy, not this one. The Watcher is probably a man who will in the future become a collaborator of Paul.
