The Space Marines or Adeptus Astartes are foremost amongst the defenders of Humanity, the greatest of the Emperor of Mankind's warriors. The Watcher is actually the good guy, an entity that judge ones that committed grave sins and ask/haunts them to acknowledge their dark deeds. Remember, warp entities doesn't have to be demonic horrors , it can also manifest good ones, for instance , St. Celestine or ghost warriors.

The Black Library has some really good horror novels. He mentions it, but they are pretty horrifying, as even in Age of Sigmar has horrid implications of the settings. The Warhammer Crime novels are also extremely good. I prefer the Crime novels, personally, the 40k universe is so interesting when told by a single perspective in a hive city. Flesh and Steel has a moment that has haunted me since I read it, if you know, you know.

By the end of the story the Watcher, while creepy, doesn't even seem like an antagonistic entity. It's like a chaos entity of metaphysical and literal reflection.Holding people accountable for their past transgressions. Would explain it's why it's so interested in the one character over all others.

Not chaos, it warp base yes but has no connection to any god, it is it's own thing, chaos may be big but it not the whole warp there are small independent factions. This is guilt but taken form, hunting down the most horrible people to feed off of them, has such it is a good warp entity who may be even against chaos. Think about it you are a guard about to get murdered by a chaos marine, this guy will tell the marine to turn around and eat him, then gets up waves good bye and feeds off more marines. You meanwhile will be left alone since your innocent and not a good snack, a rare good warp entity.

@@Fourtytwo4242 I generally see chaos and the warp as interchangable at the current era of 40k. I agree its probably not tied to any big four. I don't know if I'd call it a good entity, it still feeds-off of the suffering of those it affects and can drive them insane but I suppose its a matter of perspective. The Guy is the story died seemingly content after expressing his grief and regret so worked out for him I suppose.

@@Fourtytwo4242 It likely isn't good, or bad, or neutral, it just Is. It may not even be a warp entity, just a phenomenon created by the incoming warp storm; a semi-sentient dark mirror reflecting a person's own psyche back at them. Have to remember the Warp itself is pretty much a realm of our own emotions and such, so any seeping into reality will likely affect psykers and those with the most emotional baggage first. Even the elderly scribe saw it, and from the sound of it, his only real problem is hubris; he even tried raising a warning about someone possibly trapped and left behind.

I mean, the Watcher pretty much mindrapes anyone that acknowledged it into madness. While it's true the Interrogator did awful shit, the thing that caused him to go insane was the Watcher, and nothing else, since he was already brainwashed and trained not to feel anything about it. It would be like saying the One Ring didn't do anything, the people that carried it simply wanted it for themselves from the get go. So, the Watcher took an active role. It just didn't rip people apart with its claws or anything, abd just fuck with their heads, which is pretty much spot on how most Daemon corruption works. Unless its Nurgle, then you just get physically ill.
@ausfo5557

@@moriskurth628 All the watcher really did was force them to confront who they were. It is not uncommon in real life for people who have done terrible things to reflect on them at a later point in their lives and feel bad about it. Some people can live in delusion, can refuse to look at the evil of their own actions, as with the scribe. But the larger point was that even if you refuse to acknowledge your own evil, it can still catch up to you in the end. When we externalize evil, when we cannot acknowledge it as originating within ourselves, that is when we are truly lost.

@@alcid4268 Kind of? The idea was to starve the chaos gods. They are only 'gods' because they are in fact so powerful. Lets take Khorne for example. God of strife and conflict. Every form of strife and conflict feeds him. A drunken brawl that starts because of a football game? He gets a drop of power. You butcher 1000 people praising his name, he gets a bucket of power. Big E knows you cant outright destroy the chaos gods, but he can make them wither on the vine to the point they are ineffectual. Imagine if khorne couldn't manifest in any way in the galaxy; he can't summon bloodletters, can't whisper in people ear encouraging them to fight, can't affect anything even on a small scale. He's too weak and too atrophied to affect the world in any way. Sure, the god 'exists' but so what? He's effectively harmless. That was the emperors plan. Weaken them to the point they are powerless to interfere. And how do you stop them from giving power to the chaos gods, either directly or even unconciously? They can't do it if they don't know they exist. If they know the gods exist then on some level they know "Huh, that monster I just butcher just made khorne a bit stronger." And that means khorne got more than just the bare minimum sliver of power from it. His plan was just to reduce their gains in power to the absolute bare minimum by denying even the knowledge they existed in the first place, thus in turn making them so weak they can't make their existence known and appear with a sign over their head saying "Hi, we exist, notice me!"

Honestly we need more eldritch in 40k. We know so much about the chaos gods that its difficult to properly portray the Horror they could actually be. But things like the Watcher are PERFECT examples of things from the warp that are truely eldritch. We understand so little of what it is, what it wants, and that's honestly what the warp and the entities within it should be. Its weird how rarely we see the "Horror" aspect of the warp or indeed ANY part 40k that could be horror stories in their own right. I'd love to see some stories from the human perspective about the Red Terror. Or any of the horrific shit that goes on in the Ghoul Stars, since I'm fairly certain you have some truly eldritch entities lurking the the Ghoul stars that are entirely separate from the warp.

I think the problem with Chaos Gods is that they all have standardized armies of demons with set-in-stone shapes for the tabletop. These "unaligned" warp entities are much more interesting because they have nothing to do with the tabletop so they can be alive and realistic within the confines of the lore. A bloodletter would be terrifying to encounter sure , but you know everything there is to know about it. Meanwhile this watcher thing could be ANYTHING. A Chaos Spawn gone wrong? An unidentified demon of Tzeentch? Or the infinitely better option , something unknowable.

It's the issue of the 40K Universe usually being depicted through the eyes of the Emperor's Angels of Death, 8+ft. tall demigods clad in power armor thicker than tank plating, armed with standard issue rapid-firing rocket launchers (Bolters); often with a side of thousands-of-years-old Eldar alien witches acting out inscrutable millennia-long plans. When you're just a person on the ground, whether it's in the meatgrinder of the front lines of the Astra Militarum, or the Hive Worlds; things are a LOT scarier.

I disagree, simply because by the description of her actions it didn't sound like it was an accident. Sending faulty respirators to troops on a toxic world? That shit's intentional. It wasn't at all surprising that she was, in fact, doing it on purpose. Also, the narrative demanded a darker twist in that exact moment. Whether it be her gloating confession or her being attacked by the watcher, something needed to pump the tension. If you have a moment of respite at the end of a horror story, often it's only there to make the next bad event bite more deeply.

The only other ones that have been named are Malal the Chaos God of Malice, Anarchy and Terror, who has the most lore out of the rest but it’s not much. Ans’l, Mo’rcck and Phraz-Etar are minor deities of the Warp, but all that’s really known is that Chaos armor across the galaxy is usually adorned with spikes of all shapes and sizes, and this is believed to be a sign of respect to these three minor deities. There are 2 unnamed and almost entirely unknown warp entities that the Imperium simply knows about because people from warring factions believe in them. That’s about it. One is the Warp manifestation of the Tau Empire’s philosophy of the Greater Good given form. However, since the original Tau Xenos responsible for creating the Greater Good philosophy has virtually no understanding of the Warp, this Warp Entity was brought into existence by the conquered and absorbed Xenos, including some humans, that do understand the warp. The literally only thing known about the second unnamed entity is that Chaos Raptors of significant Intelligence show clear signs of worshipping *something.* That’s all that is known.

@paladin danse It's a warp entity for sure, but it doesn't come across as being powerful enough to be considered a lesser deity. Think how monstrously powerful greater daemons are, and they're only splinters of the Big 4's consciousnesses. It doesn't seem to measure anywhere near one of them.

Check out Slyte. I don't think that it is affiliated with the Big 4, but it is definitely on Greater Daemon levels of nuts.

I love how even in the Warhammer universe, people still don't understand names, knowledge and awareness is dangerous.

Oh some of them do. They know that an open mind is a fortress with its gates unbarred and unguarded. Blessed is the mind too small for doubt...

It's the problem with memetics. How the hell do you tell someone not to think/acknowledge Object A, without telling them how to identify Object A? Telling them to shut up and just not acknowledge Object A doesn't help either. Worst case scenario: The poor, poor chaos Ogryns at the start of the Horus Heresy who still think they're serving the imperium because they aren't smart enough to ask

warhammer have such a wonderous fertile soil for horror story , between the diverse aliens sepcies, the horror of the warp , and simply the madness of mankind . and to me this creature was simply the burden of guilt being manifested by the power of the warp storm, emotion and feeling are litteraly multiplied by the warp. Good story, probably will going to check for this category .

This was brilliant and I hope you do more. The voice acting along with the music and visuals are a fantastic creative touch. Are there other stories similar to this in the Warhammer Horror that you'd recommend?

I thought it was gonna turn out one of them was the demon on the ship. Like she didn't want to look at it but now it's in front of her cause the investigator was corrupted. Or when she smiled, I thought she was going to ask "do you see me?" Still a good ending tho

Man, this reminds me of Carcharodon’s Tithe. Excellent, horrific tale that. And the intro brought to mind the story of Cadia’s siege and fall to Chaos, with the one officer who is brought in by Mortarion during the campaign.

To be fair it _is_ possible to put into words the sheer horror, it's just that it's taken hundreds of books and tens of thousands of hours of work 😅
