It’s a good idea to fill your bottle or bladder with the opening pointed down stream to avoid getting sediment or debris into your system. Covering the opening with a tee shirt or bandanna will also reduce the risk of getting sediment or debris into your container. 😊

A dedicated bandana is a good idea in a water kit. 👍🏼👍🏼

This is a good series Dan. You have a good presentation and your experience shows. 👍🏼👍🏼 I’ve been going into the bush for a long time. I remember when we just called it camping 😉 I suppose I’m lucky in that I feel more comfortable surrounded by wilderness and wild animals than anywhere there are people. Learned a lot of things over the decades (many many decades). You are correct saying that nothing will beat experience. I’ve taught my kids to do lots of things, and their experience gives them confidence. Not just confidence to survive in the woods, but confidence in their abilities to learn and grow in all areas of their lives. Best feeling ever was having my youngest boy teach me a wilderness skill that I didn’t know. Oh, one more thing: There is no dancing in the creek! 😆

Wow! Awesome how you are teaching your kids and building their confidence. What a rewarding experience! Agree 100% about being more at home in the woods. Complete peace out there. Only chaos is when I come back to civilization. And creek dancing is fun! Lol!

@@ochocobushcraft1742 There is a saying “We fear what we don’t know” Away from the comforts of “civilization”, it’s easy for a kid to get scared. But learning about the animals that live there can take away a lot of that anxiety. I talk about situational awareness in the woods. Know the wind direction, pay attention to what you smell, pay attention to what you hear (being quiet is very important). Every animal in the woods knows these things, and it’s important (imho) to be like the animals that live there full time. Looking for sign is a big part of being in the woods with kids. It’s really great when we see an animal in the wilds. Even just a woodpecker or an owl can be a teaching moment. I remember the very first animal I saw in the wilderness. I was 5 and with my Dad. We watched it digging a hole. My Dad was (quietly) telling me about badgers. Such as how they can turn around in their skin and defend themselves. Confidence building tasks I’ve taught my kids at home and in the field: * tomahawk throwing * flint and steel fire * land navigation (map and compass ) * animal sign reading * reading the night sky

Hello Dan thanks for this helpful information. I noticed that the videos with Nica are not available anymore. I saw one last week, I wanted to show it to my daughter but I could not found it.

A good video, I have a question if you got water with your Nalgene and then poured the water into the Cnoc bag in order to use your filter isn't the inside of the water bottle contaminated from the water you got from the creek?
@ochocobushcraft1742
@ochocobushcraft1742 Жыл бұрын
Good question. I've done this and been fine. Maybe the one or two drops of water left in bottle isn't enough to make you sick??? I could wipe it out good with my bandana wrapped around a stick. To be 100 percent sure, best to use filter attached to bag, or boil in bottle.

What about viruses, heavy metals, PCBs, PUFAS etc?? A filter is really only sufficent in very rural areas not affected by man generally. I wouldnt rely on filtration in anything but the most dire survival situation or the most remote of epeditions. I want to know i have a purifier. There rrally isnt streams, even along the Appalachian trail, near me that dont have issues with heavy metals, PUFAs and PCBs. Even boiling doesn't remove these issues, minus the viruses. Im not criticozong you btw, idk where you live, but for most people this water kit isnt enough. By "enough" i dont mean you're gonna be poisoned and die on yhe spot, but i dont want to consume those materials for long term health reasons so i thinking something like a grayl is unfortunately necessary
