it was in 1987, I was a student at cambridge university. We used to go to a pub called the spade and becket. I was at Gonville and Caius. With friends from australia, south africa, france . morrocco, we used to listen this song out loud , driking a paint of bitter, looking at very beautifull girls.....

Karl Wallinger on piano, he really gave the early waterboys that musical brilliance live on stage. A great multi instrumentalist and songwriter/singer , World Party is Karl, as the Waterboys are Mike.
@alansloane26512 жыл бұрын
I really think Mike lost a bit of himself when Karl left as they were so good together IMHO, still love what they both do, saw them in Manchester I think around this time in a tiny venue in town, great show , I bought the album because of this song and have followed them ever since, still good to this day
@docgonzales2 жыл бұрын
@@alansloane2651 I saw Karl in Australia promoting his 3rd album as a 3 piece world party , industry gigs etc , in a pub/club in Sydney 250 standing room , and he was so good , his guitar work was exceptional, a lefty who flipped a right handed guitar over to play rather than restringing it for a lefty, he and his George Harrison looking hofner bass player were an obvious level of musicianship above the regular.

What a great video of an amazing performance! They all look awesome, even the crowd! Thanks for posting this! Added tp playlist and subscribed. Anthony Thistlethwaite really does shine in this! He's with the Saw Doctors now, playing in the UK this summer. "...ashes and sand..oooh, all the better to build with!"

Just read Mike's autobiography and apparently it's a song about Patti Smith....one of his idols. Fantastic guy.....brilliant musicians producing unbelievably amazing music.

I think it must be in 1984. If I would have a travel time machine I would choose to go to see one show like that. To see Waterboys and later U2 it must be an ecstasy.
@JoyDivision884 жыл бұрын
Got to agree with you. Blew U2 off the stage. That line up with Karl Wallinger keyboards, Anthony Thistlewaite sax, and Roddy Lorimer on trumpet was the greatest. Watched the rest of the concert bored as I had seen U2 from early beginnings and they had become a bloated pompous load of crap. IMO.

The best incarnation of this great band! And their best period - 'This is the Sea' extended album says it all. Something was lost with the departure of Thistlethwaite...something never found since imho

Rob Phipps But it was still Mike Scott's band. I remember reading an old interview of Wallinger saying that Scott didn't give him the artistic license he neededvto thrive on. But Wallinger was meant to lead elsewhere. Still love MikecScott, no matter the direction he he forcefully led.
@frankiejones18196 жыл бұрын
@@cheesepriestess7935 yes Mike's vision for the band lyrics and melody are brilliant but I agree with your comment about Wallinger.

I remember Johnny, hey Johnny come lately I remember her shoes like a ballerina A girl called Johnny who Changed her name when she Discovered her choice was to Change or to be changed I remember a girl called Johnny Black as hell and white as a ghost Don't talk about life or death She said I've had enough of both A girl called Johnny who was not scared They would have torn her to pieces but Nobody dared I remember a girl called Johnny The train came to town, boy she got on it With no looking back, with not a word If she said goodbye, well I never heard But the noise goes on The noise, the jazz And the truth is in somebody else's hands And the house that a girl called johnny built Is now just ashes and sand Ashes and sand Ashes and sand Oooh all the better to build with

The best band of the 80s. A thousand times better than Queen and more unknown
@peaceofiona9198 Жыл бұрын
Accidentally Queen and The Waterboys are my two favorite bands and it's silly to say one is thousand times better than the other. If there is one band that teaches you and respects all genres of music it's Queen. What is so appealling for me in both bands they were so different from their contemporaries, were never afraid to change, both had terrific passionate singers. And both Queen and The Waterboys were often slammed by stupid critics for selfindulgence ( whatever that word means)
@davelochrie8342 жыл бұрын
Please tell me why this tune only has 280k views it's a joke as we are talking about the waterboys who are a top quality band that write quality tunes some people just haven't heard real music because the music of today just don't come close to the 70s and 80s bar Ed sheeran and Adele plus a few others but it's not like when pink Floyd and sister sledge and chic and toto and the list goes on james brown barry white randy Crawford oh let's not forget the beatles proper music

This is from the 1984 North American Tour, when they were supporting U2 on the Unforgettable Fire tours. Thing is, I don't know which venue or city this was filmed in - there's recordings of the gig, but I had no idea it had been filmed. Anyone know exactly when and where this was?

Nice version! Too bad they didn't slow it down just a wee tiny bit. Some of the majesty gets lost (but probably not for those who were in attendance.... they likely enjoyed the slightly upbeat energy this version provides.) Under rated band, under rated musicians, under rated poetry.

There are not many bands who entered the music scene in the 80's and are still delivering awesome live performances. I was going to see them at Bluesfest in Byron Bay, Australia this weekend but unfortunately COVID-19 has stopped that. Check out this video that just shows you how much fun they have even between performances kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJW8aKl_apuirpI

So why are you still posting 18+ years after you stopped liking 'The Waterboys'? I love Mike Scott-he IS the Waterboys_ and ok, some of the albums haven't been theoretically or lyrically to my taste, but I still always liked the music ( I had similar thing with Manic Street Preachers who I also love)So it all maybe depends whether you just love music, or you love an 'ideology', or you just go along loving with the band cos of the players, or if it evokes 'your time' in life........(out of time!)

This video and the previous 'Red Army Blues' are superb but wrongly dated. Karl Wallinger left the Waterboys in 1985 but features large as life on both? Probably the best Waterboys line-up ever
