When it comes to prayer, I put myself in the presence of God . Before Mass were had the Rosary. I asked the angels and the Holy Men and Women to join us. I felt their presence. You make prayer more personal for me.

So awesome and insightful! Thank you so much Brothers and Dr. MaryRuth! It was wonderful to hear Dr. MaryRuth share insights about family life, but I would also love to hear more from the Brothers about how St. Teresa's teachings apply to their lives as friars. Thanks again and God reward you!

Thank you for this very informative discussion. Each time I review this Carmelcast, I get a deeper understanding of St.Teresa's teachings on Prayer, Discernment and Spiritual Love. I am a mother of older adult children, and the insight on Spiritual Detachment on parenting was a blessing for me. May God continue to bless all of you.

I'm a grand mom of 7,at 61yrs.Loved this discussion .I've been striving to own the carmelite spirituality from the day I read the autobiography ,then listened to the audio books Interior castle and the way of perfection as I could not find the books here in srilanka.The Theresian virtues as you said ,hit me home. As we know that Jesus is alive in every human being ,if we can see jesus , in every one of them...thru the eyes of his holy spirit residing in me,let that be...... family,elders ,kids,rich,poor,religious ,aethist,educated or not,young or old..no matter whome...,I feel thats charity..thats humilty...and that will help us to be detached to be attached !! Alone we cant.but with the holy spirit we can....pray for me,I'm weak...

I loved this as I’m still recovering from teenagers. Her words about seasons is spot on. Saint Therese (little T) would talk about placing flowers at the feet of Jesus in the form of sacrifice. When you give self sacrificial love think of it as flowers you are placing at the feet of our Lord.

The part that particularly resonated with me was the detachment discussion because I have never understood how that went into a married vocation specifically with relationships. I have 3 sons and 2 are very active teenagers (we all go to the same high school, but I’m a teacher haha) so we have tons of togetherness and opportunities to practice patience. It’s a delicate balance to love without strings but be influential enough as appropriate to their ages. I appreciated hearing the reflection on that.

In the beginning of Chapter 3, is she taking a poke at the Inquisition when she says seems to suggest that an interior strengthening is the way to combat heresy and eases into the need to support knowledgeable presentation of church doctrine through prayer?
@michaeldonohue8870 Жыл бұрын
I know this is replying a bit late - but its not directed at the inquisition, at least in this instance. Marcelle Auclair, who wrote a biography on Saint Teresa provides the background for this in her work: This is a message that the King, Don Felipe, instructed his ambassador to the Pope to impart secretly: ".. I would lose all my realms and give my own life a hundred times over rather than suffer the least schism in religion or in the service of God; I have not the least intention of reigning over heretics. I intend to try to smoothe out the religious difficulties in the Low Countries without recourse to arms, if it is still possible, for I see clearly that a war would involve the country in total devastation; but if matters cannot be put right without armed intervention, I am resolved to take up arms and take part in the battles myself; nothing shall hinder me, neither the ruin of this country nor that of the lands I possess elsewhere." "Teresa of Jesus used love to bring about God’s triumph, the King thought he could bring it about by bloodshed; Teresa passed her life in penance and prayer for the redemption of the heretics whom the King was causing to be massacred; Teresa hoped that the King would make Spain a beacon light, but he made it a stake. "Philip II ruined Spain without succeeding in making the spirit of the Gospel triumphant in the world, for it was not without reason that Christ commanded Peter to put back his sword into its sheath. An army of mercenaries even if Friars Preachers walk before it will never open men’s hearts to the word of Christ. In their convents Mother Teresa and her daughters fought more effectively." All of that can be found around Page 187 in "Saint Teresa of Avila" by Marcelle Auclair. So, by way of summary, what Teresa is referring to in Chapter Three is the use of the sword by the state - remember of course that she is living through the Protestant Reformations.

I am so grateful for this content and loved your first video. I would never overreach by offering my measly 2-cents but you asked for comments so here’s my only suggestion.... I love your content regardless but would prefer many less chapters each episode to allow for slower digestion of the material. I know that would create other issues, namely scheduling, so I don’t have an answer unless the series were to run beyond lent. (perhaps I’m just looking for an excuse to limit my reading but I get so much watching you folks interact)

Thanks for your feedback, Jay. You are right that this is a lot of material to squeeze into this short time of Lent. St. Teresa's text is so rich that we could easily spend an entire episode discussing each chapter. We plan to offer some longer, more in depth book studies in the near future. God bless you!
