"Creatively bankrupt" will always be the most apt description for these writers. I get they want to reflect the demographic of modern times, but they do it by disrespecting what came before them. Someone else described this as a term that I forget, but it's basically explained like: "The founders appoint a younger breed to eventually take over, the younger doesn't understand the original vision and changes everything from the inside out, and now they feel like they're the original founders." They're power tripping.

As you say, there IS a way to do this right, if you care to take the time to do it properly. Steel, for example, is technically a 'black version' of a character. He is often referred to as the 'black Superman', and was even briefly teased as a replacement for Superman, back during the 'Death of' storyline that introduced him. The difference, though, between him (and some others like him) and a lot of this current crop of characters? He had actual thought and care put into him, and though he had obvious similarities to a pre-existing hero, HE WAS NOT THAT HERO. Steel has inherent ties to Superman, but he is, first and foremost, himself - John Henry Irons is his OWN character with his OWN backstory that deals with his OWN themes. He wasn't just some other Kryptonian dude who happened to look like a black guy - he was, if anything, closer to Iron Man. He may have been a THEMATIC 'black Superman', but you couldn't have mistaken him for Supes if you tried - and because they put some actual effort into all this, he was successful and beloved and still has devoted fans. (And yeah, his movie wasn't good - but the fact that he got it at all is still notable.) With these more recent characters, though, it almost always IS just a race-and/or-gender-swap - but without the established character aspects of the original, or anything significant to replace them with. They don't go 'hey, if I were to make a black Batman analogue, how would I do it; obviously he wouldn't be Bruce Wayne, so maybe a self-made man type, and we'd need some sort of twist on the bat motif to differentiate it from...' and so on - they just go 'Dude! What if Batman... was black? Oh, it's genius; Twitter will love me! I'll make him Bruce Wayne identical race-swapped twin brother or some shit; no one'll care - let's get those movie deals comin' in!'
"It was a time where black characters couldn't be created!" Ok. So create new black characters now.

It's possibly one of the worst arguments, if it can even qualify as one, I've ever seen and heard from these types. It's the standard one for these idiots. What's worse is that basic scrutiny undermines the fake argument fast. For example, if these characters that they're subverting not under the banner of Marvel or established character profiles, would they have any value at all? Of course the answer is no. Not to mention even as they deconstruct and subvert the characters in the present they don't sell. They literally have nothing backing their position yet they make it anyway. It's insanity. Their worldview bars them from creativity which is why they must corrupt, destroy, subvert, and deconstruct. Even the artwork has declined. The aesthetic is nihilism. On a quick note, and this has been on my mind for a while now, notice how they make an entire adversary of us in such a bizzare way. We aren't actually an adversary to them at all, which ironically is as cartoonish as the world(in this case comics, but inclusive of society) they wish to transform away from its thematic, and reality based purpose. They have to make us as such because they are at war with reality itself and we must be the proxy in order for them to keep this going. It's a total delusion that they've given themselves over to which is why falling sales and quality doesn't seem to phase them. Nihilism doesn't allow them to see this reality and the associated metrics for this industry.

Right now I don’t want new black characters. Because they will not be characters. They will be mouth pieces for “the message.” Even when they create original characters the reason they don’t sell is because they can’t help themselves. Believe me I’d love a new black punisher type character. But I just know it wouldn’t be fighting for justice it would be fighting for their skewed version of justice. They would tip toe around actual issues in black communities because it would make those communities look bad.

I actually have no problem with Silk or Captain Marvel in context. The concept that Silk was an idea with potential as a villain or an ally to Spider-Man, until she was co-opted by ideology, poor writing and inconsistent characterization. It was, for the most part its own identity. Captain Marvel, back when she was Ms Marvel was once a great character who has been tarnished by politics. I hope one day she can be salvaged, but oh man, it's gonna take a long time. A damn long time. It really is a bizarre thought process that they only find legitimacy for their “Characters™” in appropriating white characters, especially red heads. There was a brilliant cartoon covered by Romanian TVee, that showed an assembly line of characters of pop culture on a conveyor belt movong through a device that changed their race, gender, sexuality etc.

Imagine they do a major reveal that the "Captain" Marvel we have been getting was actually some Kree general that she fought at some point and due to some wack power play, it ended absorbing part of her memories and personality, but it all got juiced up, resulting in this mess. Then, we get yet another Kree invasion, but this time led by a also mind warped Kree General Danvers. They clash again, get mind swapped back and boom, Ms. Marvel is back, in a pretty comics fashion Edit: also agree on the removal of redheads. It's a damn shame.

It's weird logic for these guys. To say race shouldn't matter which I agree, it's experience and knowledge, yet they want to race swap, now it matters. Also because characters were made in the 40s so they have more presence and had to be white? That's not a valid point. How long ago was that? 80, 70 years ago? Most of us weren't even born yet. And what happened in the 70s, 80s and 90s? Just create new characters and build them up or work with the many already there. Don' t excuse laziness. What ever happened to Spawn, Blade, Static Shock, Green Lantern John Stewart? Great characters put to the side because it's easier to play victim for political reasons, to push an agenda. Oh man, isn't it more convenient for these hypocrites not to have these badass characters make a return and just bury them deep to say there isn't any powerful black heroes?

They need to stop pretending that there isn't some psychological problem with the way they think and think this logically. I feel like its extra insulting to realize that a lot of these famous characters were made a long time ago and rather than being retired or closing the book on their story their namesake has to be paraded around to keep making money off of it. This isn’t how storytelling should be done. We have people trying to concoct characters for the purpose of filling quotas and maintaining trademarks rather than telling their stories. What should be happening is people making their own new stories and characters. You can still expect the pool of characters to become more diverse because the demand for characters with more unique backgrounds and perspectives is omnipresent. And better yet you won’t have all your minority characters being constantly compared to their white counterparts.

I'm not entirely against the concept of tokenization. I am against tokenization solely for the purpose of inclusion or diversity that does not honor or expand upon the original hero's story in a meaningful way. Nostalgia bait and virtue signaling aside, there is something relatable (to some of us at least) about acknowledging one's own mortality and the desire to create a legacy. This is why I do not object as strongly to the concept of a hero mantle. Bruce Wayne doesn't plan on living forever. He's hand-selected and trained proteges, hoping that one will be excellent enough to succeed him. Isn't that a mantle? You could even say that the Robin persona is a mantle in and of itself that has provided both great and not-so-great story arches. If the stories are good, I don't care if the proteges or successors are of a different gender or race from the original hero.

@@Likexner Agreed. I am for diversity and inclusion, though (done right). That's the real challenge, isn't it? I mean, the comic book medium has evolved over time. Historically this evolution was driven by comics fans who entered the industry. They were fans 1st. Today it seems overly engineered. There's an intentional, socially-driven agenda to creating new stories and characters. Social issues of the time may have influenced the plot in the past, but it typically wasn't the point of the entire story or introduction of a character. Looking forward to seeing what the Rippaverse puts out.

It's for validating their insecurities. Instead of dealing with them in a healthy way, they demand everyone make them feel better about themselves and shove their poorly created self-inserts down the fans' throats and think that this is contributing to diversity in storytelling but it is not. What's worse is that they are ignoring the well-written stories that have the types of characters they are looking for and going after fandoms that don't have what they're looking for because they want to associate themselves with popular works, which means threatening creators to put in the characters they like.
