Totally clueless to what is really going on in the U.S., world, so wasn't prepared mentality for all that is happening now. Committed suicide at 67yrs old. Had no life outside chasing money, women, drinking. Had everything paid off tho. So pround of that. Nothing else to be proud of, in his old age.

I'm considered wealthy, but I live a very simple, frugal life. I appreciate that the lights comes on , the water runs and the toilet flushes each and every time! That my furnace works and my 25 year old car gets me where I need to go. My health is fine for 76. I am very blessed that I live an abundant, inspiring life!❤

When we renovated our house we lived like our grand parents. Basic kitchen with a mobile stove. The kitchen sink was also our bath. When we were finished, I realized what a luxury it is to have a dedicated room just for personal hygiene and a modern, separate kitchen. And hot and cold water you can actually drink (writing from Germany). And a separate room just for sleeping. And actually just walking over to the super market for shopping every other day (buying smaller amounts you can carry in a backpack). Living through slightly harder times made me realize how luxurious my own life is compared to a time only 50-60 years ago. The happiness of people somehow appears to be no more than my grandparents'. It maybe even declined a bit.

I'm also "not normal" and I walked away from society and a bright future in music back in 2006. I gave up on consumerism many years ago when I was in my 20s. Now I'm close to 70. I buy only what I need, good quality for the durability, but mostly second-hand. I shun the popular, fashionable brands and do not follow any trends. I don't compare myself to others, and am content with my lot in life. Others however have compared themselves to me. Many of the clothes I have are a neutral style, well-cared for, 20 - 30 years old, my car is second-hand, average, so is my furniture and the house I live in is almost 100 years old. The lead-up to the Christmas Season and end of the year's celebrations always make me cringe every year for it's rampant consumerism, accumulating debt and spending money that many people can't and struggle to afford. It's a vicious cycle that few can resist. Live life simply and be kind to others and animals.

I used to hang out with a guy who always had to have a nice new car. One day he said to me "if I had your money I would have a jacked up truck and a race car" he was dumb founded when my response was " the reason I have money is because I don't have that STUFF" he looked at me like I had two heads. He has a brand new diesel that sits in the parking lot of his job and I'm close to not having to work because the money I have saved and invested is making almost what my day job pays me. You will never make other people happy. Just stay on the path that you make for your future. Start at the end. What do you want? Figure out what you NEED to do to get to that point. Then work that plan. Remember, the first 100K sucks. It's hard, it takes a long time. After the first 100K it will snowball faster and faster. Have a great day. NOT NORMAL

I make more than 4x that and drive a 12 year old car, that i'll drive for another 12 years if it remains reliable, which I'm hoping for. The only regret i have is that to achieve my financial freedom I took a corporate job that has been soul destroying. I have 6 months to go. Started my career in a field that was super rewarding but after the death of my sister found myself with lots of debt i needed to pay off, as well as a sense that i needed to create safety. If i could do it all again, I would never have worked in the corporate world. It is the root of all that's wrong in our society, in my opinion. More so now having spent years working in it. I'll be out next June and back to meaningful work.

“We buy the ILLUSION of wealth” - this is gold! Yes, the time wasted on gaming & watching tv programming, & debt incurred unnecessarily (like expensive sporting events & extravagant kids birthday parties & off-the-charts trips, plus not shopping second-hand for everything from cars to furniture to clothes) is also key. Also, we OUTSOURCE the most important things like what we eat & medical care. Take charge of those for cost-savings & superior health. Growing a garden & gaining skills of food preservation, & also growing medicinal herbs & gaining the knowledge of how to prepare & use them are REAL investments.

I was never taught real financial wealth and literacy. I radically downsized my lifestyle in order to change my future. It’s so hard a lot of mental and emotional breakdowns but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Single income, no bankruptcy just good old fashion paying every penny back and doing it this way for me is a sure fire way to remember the sacrifice and never live by mainstream standards again. The beautiful thing is you can move to a million different towns here and live a nearly completely different lifestyle. And if those choices are not enough, we are all free to try another country. Every time I go to the grocery store I always marvel at the thousands of options so easily available to us. And I’m grateful I didn’t have to grow or raise that food, package it, transport it, put it on the store shelves. I guess I’m not normal for appreciating all these gifts.

I agree 100%. A lot of people act on emotions. They think the new car or nice house will make them happy but they fail to realize they are stressed out and unhappy because they struggle to make ends meet and are in a never ending cycle of debt. I get called cheap all the time which is fine because although I am far from rich I do not stress about money or care about the nice things other people have. Knowing I can easily pay for the things I need is worth being frugal.

Just like him, I also try to break free from the system once and for all and just live financially free with purpose and contentment. That’s it. That’s all I want and need. Nothing more, nothing less. Just break free from the rat race once and for all. There’s no point in buying a car, going to work and work your ass off if you’re always going to be left with nothing at the end of the day. There’s zero point in that, only misery. I’m almost 40 and don’t even own my own house because of this shit. It’s ridiculous. Even when I do work my ass off and take full responsibility, more often than not I don’t even get what I want and need. I literally get punished for working hard and being the best. This is a very privileged take on this, and I understand it because I was there. There are problems from the get-go now. Try finding an entry-level job that you can actually make a living on. Try living in a place where you can ride public transit to work/shop - mortgages and rent are now taking way more percentage of our wages than they were. Your talk starts from a place of privilege and ignores the plight of some to even get there. Do we pay for increasing food costs or medication costs or housing - people need the basics now. I wholly agree with a lot of what you've said - get out of the rat race of consumerism. I work with clients on this subject A Lot and my go-to is that 'there will always be someone with a gold plated and gem encrusted sports car' - trying to keep up with the Kardashians is killing a lot of people's souls. I do hope what you're saying is able to break through some people's shells earlier than they normally would.

I'm not normal. My joy is walking in the woods with my husband and our two rescue dogs. We own one car. A 2017 Subaru Forester. Our home is sixty years old. It looks old, but the pipes are replaced, the furnace is replaced, and the water heater is replaced. We invest conservatively in the market. I dress in simple clothing. We recently pulled up the old carpeting and refinished the lovely old red oak flooring. The joy of living debt free is amazing. The mental freedom and lack of stress is a blessing. My husband and I value our frugally rewarding life. My husband plans to work until he is seventy. I stay home, caring for the chores. It is not a glamorous job, but it is what I enjoy. Find peace. Less is more. He works as a nuclear engineer from home. Another huge blessing. His commute to his simple office basement is also a blessing. We hope you find your path out of normalcy. To truly live the good life we are offered in our country. It is not glamorous, but we love it.

I’m not normal! One thing that our culture has gotten away from that was historically normal, is multiple families living on the same property. The desire to please by thinking that it is expected to buy a large house that we spend no time in because we have to work so much to pay for it, is a major misfortune to those who follow that path. It does not have to be living in the same house, but being close to family provides so many other benefits to young families starting out, and parents aging. It definitely takes contentment and the willingness to work differences out with others, but the rewards are beyond the contrary, lack of debt being a huge benefit! Thanks for the reminder!

Don't mean to brag, but I knew these truths at a young age. I bought my first house at 19 in 1990, out of the 11 cars I had only one was brand new and that was $12,500 in 1988. The other 10 cars were used private owner. 7 of them were work vehicles (lots of abuse, but money makers, for my plumbing business). Had two houses and a condo. Got divorced, kept and paid off one house with quite a bit of money that I invested. The house I live in is a small 3 bedroom appx. 1,000 sf. one car garage. It's a basic, smaller one story home, no frills home in a city that got really expensive to live in, long after I bought my home. The only debt I have is less than 10k in student loans. I rarely eat out, I usually do staycations. I have two kids so I feel better staying frugal. I like doing well and looking like I'm not! This monkey doesn't feel the need to impress the other monkeys, nor do I want attention drawn to me.

This video: don’t work your lifetime away. Also this video: get a side hustle. This video: don’t spend your money on a big house, a new car. Also this video: invest in real estate and the stock market. I know that you are trying to be motivational but the suggestions cost time spent working and money to procure. Instead of thinking those who have less complain more, maybe we can just be understanding about how not everyone can physically and mentally get their sh together and it’s not as simple as go get a side hustle. Not everyone that is poor has debt, a flashy over their means lifestyle, or no discipline, or is bad with money. There’s a lot of us out there who work our fingers to the bone simply trying to get by. We buy what we need and pay what we need to have a roof on our heads, food in our belly. What a spectacular way to miss the opportunity to say something meaningful. "What truly matters... our future, our finances." The utterly blind criticising the blind. You're right that people around the world live different lives. They have one another. The problem in the US is not finances or investing poorly. It's being rich in everything but love. And your idea that everyone has to be responsible for themselves may be true in practice and in the US reality, but it is totally unsustainable in human nature which is why we have always had communities except today. Canadian indigenous people were some of the best soldiers Canada ever produced. When they went to Europe, they were awesome fighters, brave, and gave a huge service to their nation. When they returned home, most of them ended up in very tragic ends. This is because they come from communal cultures, where, when they were given structure and purpose and meaning and belonging - and guidance, they excelled. Back home, in the north american neoliberal disaster of everyone is on their own and even families kick their kids out at 18, they couldn't make it. Humans are not meant to live each for himself in perpetually competitive enterprises. You're right in much of the symptoms - you're totally wrong about the solution and the cause. Humans don't invest in the bigger house and the car and the material things to acquire status thinking it would make them better or happy - they do those things precisely because they're UNHAPPY, and neoliberalism has taught them that maybe if they project an image of success - finally they will find that fulfillment of belonging. The only way to have a meaningful life is in community/communion with others. And many, many people, do not have the capacity or ability to be islands of their own and do the things you say. Anybody could die at any moment. The notion that you should save perpetually for your "future" as a response to your feeling of unhappiness is so stupid it makes me hurt: money won't make you happy now but it will make you happy later. 😂😂😂 Money will never make you happy. They're pursuing it because that has always been the story of America. This stupid narrative that you perpetuate about the land of opportunities and all the rest of it. If you are barely surviving, what the hell are you talking about? Do you know how many people have nobody? 27% of Americans in a large study indicated they don't have ONE SINGLE FRIEND. Even if that person has a good job, think about what they have to go through, without anyone to help them they have to not only pay for everything themselves but they have nobody to talk to, nobody to run things by, nobody to help them throw the garbage out, nobody to celebrate holidays with, and then you come along and tell these people you're investing wrong, that's the source of your problems

THANK YOU! I had to scroll way too far to find someone that actually gets it. This video is insidious in the way it hides propaganda for rugged individualism behind the obvious and correct critique of American consumerism. To assert that most people’s problems are self-inflicted because of consumerism, lack of hustle, and no investments is insulting. Americans are the product and corporate powers are doing everything they can to suck every last bit of money and labor out of you. We’re overworked, underpaid, overcharged, and polluted by media to keep us divided and unaware of the powers that created and maintain this system of exploitation.

@j.b.8984 Is it not astounding to walk around every day with your jaw dropped and your mouth wide open being awake to the absurdity of the world? I wonder how you cope with it? I find it incredible. As Arthur Schopenhauer put it - "But if, in the end, a man of noble character comes to see, as the effect of his own experience, or by the lessons he learns from others, what it is that may be expected of men in general,-namely, that five-sixths of them are morally and intellectually so constituted that, if circumstances do not place you in relation with them, you had better get out of their way and keep as far as possible from having anything to do with them,-still, he will scarcely ever attain an adequate notion of their wretchedly mean and shabby nature: all his life long he will have to be extending and adding to the inferior estimate he forms of them." As Jesus would put it - forgive them, they know not what they do (atheist here). And the saddest thing of all, and so incredibly absurd, is that this state of affairs is PRECISELY what caused Marx to do everything he did - he predicted how commodification would cause all human values to dissipate and be replaced by money. Humans form relationships of need - I help you move, you help me move - in the process we become friends and our friendship becomes more meaningful and fulfilling than the value of the services we extended to one another in helping each other move. It is through our needs that we become allied. But today, we pay movers, and we don't even know their name. The commodification of all human activities places a price on all human experience - and thus provides the illusory perception that the way to acquire those experiences or states of being (ie ontological states) is through accumulating precisely the exchange value in other activities. In other words, the very process of mechanized production where the worker no longer completes the entire product, but makes only one wheel of a car - is a process of disassembly from the contextual whole, that places man in a disassembled perception of his life, equating the pursuit of fulfillment with the activity of work, where the accumulation of funds can then later be substituted for whatever ontological state one desires, since being, like working, are both commodified activities of services and goods. But nobody would listen. Nobody ever listens. My whole life I have been Kassandra, shouting beware the Greeks with gifts.

I noticed this immediately, too. How can you acknowledge America's position as a global superpower and then refuse to entertain the possibility that it's our government who created the environment to trap people in cycles of slavery, consumerism, and poverty in the first place? We think we're so exceptional that not even international law applies to us, even if it's in the interest of ordinary Americans, because it certainly won't benefit the American entity.

Yep. Back in the 60’s when I saw the shift from aspiring to saving to aspiring to living off of credit my brain rebelled. Credit allows a higher standard of living in the present, but only for as long as you can service the debt. The minute you can’t service the debt you have a big problem. Living within your means isn’t nearly as sexy, but it is much more secure because you can manage breaks and downturns of your income stream without having to resort to drastic measures. I always liked the saying “When the tide goes out you get to see who’s swimming naked”.
