I think gatekeeping may not be inherently bad, but the dynamic of how fighting games are played has changed compared to like 20 years ago. Most fighting game stuff were happening in an Arcade or on the couch before the 2000s. Now it's mostly online. If gatekeeping is the "negative" side of expectation check, to make sure people accepts loses, today's online centered fighting experience lacks the "positive" side of losing, being able to have a (or several) buddy beside you to both talk to and encourage each other after each lost. Hell you don't even get to say "oh shit how'd you do that?" to the pro that's beating you up. Online matches has zero chance of befriending the opponent, or even humanizing the opponent, so the pros out there are just pure frustration and agony to your mind, which certainly doesn't help you accept losing.

@chompompcharly
@chompompcharly 4 ай бұрын
I think that sometimes, people can make sweeping value judgments on new folks having very normal reactions to miserable matches. It's one thing to lose a close fight, but another to be beaten so bad you basically didn't even get a chance to make a mistake other than trying to play. Matches like that do happen to everyone, and when they do you could either share your own experience of being totally demolished with that person and show them how it's still gonna be fine, or you could ridicule them, calling them weak-willed for not having years of experience and community already built up. All these people aren't lazy, or just want "easy wins" they just wanted to play. People do play hard games but typically, they're able to at least do something before the hammer comes down. I don't even blame Justin necessarily, the matchmaking wasn't ready, but this is the kind of thing that makes you put the game down for at least a little while. "gates/walls" forming naturally in a scene like this is fine, when people can see them from far away and work their way to them, but not when you open the door and see the gate being constructed right in front of you.

I find it funny that his conversation comes a couple of weeks after the MOBA one. The main difficulty of a MOBA game is not on the gameplay itself, it is the literal decades of experience the playerbase has that increases the skill floor so much it is impossible for newcomers to overcome. Pat and Woolie just felt the experience of being in the newcomer seat and they felt threatened and overwhelmed and talked about how bad that is. And then comes a fighting game and their reaction is "lol get bodied, you'd better learn from that".

The main advantage MOBAs have always had over fighting games is the team aspect. There's a natural avenue for a more experienced player to introduce friends and show them the ropes so they can play as a team. Fighting games had this back in the arcade days where people actually gathered and made the "community" part of the FGC. In the online era, ranked matchmaking lacks that crucial social component
@waidixon8965
@waidixon8965 4 ай бұрын
Justin's great at doing the "Nah kid" part of the dynamic by demolishing the kids, but there's no one actually saying the "Welcome to the community!" part of the line because You Lose is the only thing popping up at the end of an online match. Posting clips that's going to get less than a dozen views for the average joe, just aren't the same as having a/couple of friends hyping each other on the couch or in Arcades. I think that's the part fighting games or its community need to focus on providing an alternative. The bottleneck to getting more people into fighting games today's online centric environment will likely be how to promote the positive side of losing.

@gwen9939
@gwen9939 4 ай бұрын
It's definitely exaggerated. A loss against the Wazzler is over before you can blink and you're back to rolling the roulette on getting anyone but him. It's also this unique 1 very old game that a very few people have been playing for 20 years, whereas a lot of other games have ranked systems that pair you against similar skilled players. Even the less mainstream titles with functional online like BB, UNI, Skullgirls, etc., you aren't exactly getting bodied for someone's content on the other end, it's just that the community and playerbase are so small that if you really want to learn the game you probably need to reach out to a discord rather than relying on the in-game matchmaking.

@@gwen9939 It's never just "this one game" though. The simple fact of the matter is that its impossible to catch up to someone with years of experience in fighting games in general. Because fighting games is a niche genre you're mostly going up against people with years of experience. Let's think of it this way. Say I'm new to fighting games. Everyone else has been basically been playing fighting games since SF2 was in arcades, so more than 20 years of playing fighting games, understanding invisible fundamentals like footsies, getting the muscle memory for common inputs, and so on. How long would it take for me to get to a point where I could actually be equal to them? One week? Two weeks? A month? A year? 2 years? Is anyone who is CONSTANTLY losing and getting touch of death'd going to be playing that long? Discord fighters are even worse because they're even nicher and filled with people who just grind this one game out for years and do nothing else.

TBF JWong is doing the same with other 20 years veterans. With that said old fighting games (I say pre-2010 more or less) did have a way higher skill ceiling on execution without any handhold - and that do make it way harder to pick them for newer players. For that new games are way better gateway, with SF6 being just amazing in all senses, Tekken having a great entry and Fatal Fury about to release something that is shapping to be just as awelsome

Honestly this is why I didn't bother getting the collection. I love getting new fighting games at launch and learning along with everyone else. But for this, we all knew the decade long veterans would take over from day 1, and they'll always have that tremendous advantage no matter how much time I invest in it myself. The simple truth is this game is for them, not newcomers like me 🤷‍♂️

The matchmaking has been patched recently, so you can find players of comparable skills to your own pretty quickly. The worst of it is if you get matched against a veteran who's still climbing the ranks, but they won't stay there and you'll be ready to face them by the time you reach their final rank yourself. Not jumping on while there's a surge of interest just ensures that you'll lose your one chance to comfortably enter the scene, though, the delayed physical release does at least guarrantee a second spike in the online playerbase once it's released. I'm playing a low-tier team, and, while I have some legacy knowledge and have done my homework in terms of employing 50/50 mixups, resets and the like, I also go out of my way to avoid infinites, yet I've been having a very comfortable time in Ranked, so I'd say this as good a time as one can hope for for beginners.

I know the FGC is gonna be how it's gonna be, but I don't think a lot of people realize that alienating potential newcomers from a thing that you want to stay relevant is one of the worst strategies possible. I mean, if someone wants improve because they keep getting their ass whooped, and the only feedback they're getting is "git gud", "skill issue", or "u gon learn today" without any instructions on specifically how, that's just gonna demotivate them from playing, which reduces player count, which reduces product visibility, which reduces the likelihood that the product you want to keep in the spotlight will stay there.

You probably should engage actively with the FGC to learn how things actually are outside the 1 or 2 viral clips of Justin being Justin. I mean, even going onto his stream at any point after MvC2 has been out he's answering questions from newcomers. People in the FGC are gonna read accusatory remarks like this that assume they understand how things actually function and respond sarcastically with a "git gud" because it isn't really fair to bring those accusations without actually having any proof that this is a community problem. But if you knew what are out there of community wikis and completely free resources made by people for audiences of hundreds in their spare time for no money you wouldn't have the impression that the FGC is unwelcome to new players. There's so many resources for new players now, and always a welcoming attitude if you're like "Hey, I'm here to learn the game for real". But you can't jump online and expect to win as a new player. you're gonna lose 98% of your matches and if you can't deal with that up front it's gonna be tougher when you have 1000s of hours in and still losing 50% of them.

The memes are funny and all, but what pat said about new players needing to effectively have their face shoved into the dirt, that mentality is the reason why wooly has to occasionally look around in utter confusion and repeat the phrase "why don't people play fighting games". There's a difference between just playing your best to have fun, and doing so while mocking and celebrating how trash your opponents are because you sweated at a game for twenty years before they ever touched it.
