Additional notes: - The pistol's secondary fire leads people to compare it to the Glock 18, which has full-auto capability. But given the lack of a selector, and the inaccurate fire-rate, it's more like Gordon is just tapping the trigger faster. - The HD Beretta seems to share the same animations as the Desert Eagle from OpFor, which would explain it's exaggerated recoil. - They may have intentionally removed the deagle's iron sights as a homage to the pistol from Duke Nukem 3D. - Early models of the HECU show them holding an M16 instead of the MP5. I'm unsure if it was planned to be a usable weapon or not.

Whenever I play the half life resized maps I typically have both an smg (either the ARCCW Urban conflict Uzi or either the Urban decay or FA:S2 MP5 in either the EOD or SD configurations) and the Urban combat M16A2.

Most of them are only inaccuracies if you see the game's guns as being recreations of specific real guns, as opposed to fictional weapons whose appearances are modeled off of real guns. Like, if Half-Life takes place in a universe where Vortigaunts exist, why shouldn't it also take place in a universe where a gun that looks like an MP5 (but is never called an MP5) holds 50 rounds?

one way i put the spas-12 in my head cannon, and why i like it's ld model of a weird version instead of it looking more like a spas-12 in hd, because it's made as a sporting or security shotgun (possible by black mesa since they got a lot of em), reusing the button under the handguard to switch between double and single, with pump action to prevent misfires (a bit more useful in a security or sporting situation and less for killing aliens), plus i guess the black mesa security has to have some non-lethal shotgun shells somewhere, which only works if it's not semi-auto

A fun tidbit about the colt XM727 is that the HECU in the leaked alpha are shown to use it instead of the MP5 which would've been more accurate to reality. Gearbox probably seen that in the leftover files from development and thought it would be neat to bring it back, it even has that slight green shade the HD model retains a bit. A better option to accommodate the 9mm cartridge would be the Colt 635 which is basically an AR-15 upper that's made to chamber 9mm rounds About Barney's pistol from the Boxarts is most likely a prop pistol based on the Browning Hi-Power Mk1 (well at least the slide part kinda resembles that, it's my closest guess)

The Half Life 1 pistol is a surprising sleeper weapon in the original expansions AND svencoop! Being insanely accurate, ammo out the ass, and having a headshot bonus, it's surprisingly versatile when you need to take accurate shots on enemies from afar, especially when dealing with grunts or assasssins. Download a satisfying model and sound swap, and its honestly my favorite weapon to use in Svencoop

Rad, the way I as a gun nut have always justified the "fire both barrels" option of the HL/HL2 shotgun is that it's a fictional variant that has 2-round burst (the real SPAS was an autoloader so it's theoretically possible to make it full-auto or burst). In HL2 the sound lends credence to this and sounds almost sequential rather than simultaneous fire. Something to think about.

It’s all down to personal preference. I love both the Colt M727 and the MP5SD The MP5 makes sense with the environment. But the Colt 727 makes more sense with the side that uses it. Both are incredibly amazing guns both in form and function. My personal headcannon is different squadrons we’re issued different weapons for different tasks.

A minor note regarding the SPAS 12's reload. It's pretty common knowledge at this point but to reload the SPAS, you'd need to depress the bolt release button before feeding the shells into the magazine tube. There is a way around this, however. You can pull the action sleeve all the way back then let it ride forward slightly to get the carrier/loading gate to lift. Then you can feed shells in without having to turn the gun over or hold the bolt release button.

M40A3 was in development since 1996 and done in 2001, so it technicly could be deployed, eother as late prototypes for testing or bramd sniper rifles for HECU depending on when we place Black Mesa incident. (sonce its somewhere in 2000s, most likely early 2000s)

Firearm owner and collect here! Awesome video!! The pistol at 4:42 is actually a Ruger P89. It was a very popular 9mm around that era. However when Glock released the 17. It took the industry by storm. The film industry began using the guns in films, along with the police being issued them. I ultimately believe that’s why Valve decided to change the box art. As an owner of both, I’d say the P89 is still a fantastic pistol!

some things for the MP5: (warning: short wall of text) even though silenced and integrally supressed weapons are supposed to be quiet, they can still be pretty loud the MP5 has an M203PI, but isnt the PI mounted onto picatinny rails? plus, i dont even remember seeing an MP5SD handguard with a rail on the bottom, did the HECU saw off the mounts and glue it to the MP5 or did they have some special bottom rail attachment not accessible to anybody else? if the worldmodel has an MP5A3/2, and gordo freemason has an MP5SD, then does that mean the first HECU commander he killed had that MP5SD and the others had the other MP5, and freemason was just removing the magazines and cramming them in his suit? (yes, idk why i made this comment this is literally the same for every other gun that enemies drop)

yeah suppressed weapons are still loud, but the mp5sd is notorious to be very quiet, possibly as loud as a human shout, not a car engine, the grenade launcher problem is probably a specialized version for the hecu, maybe the spas-12 too (double shots spas-12 prototypes for sporting & security purposes made by black mesa weapons department?)

I've said it before, but I think the "double shot" of the Spas 12 is nothing more than it being fired twice in a row using the Semi-Automatic mode. (also I find the Mp5 slap reload annoying so it's good that it's missing) It's funny how it feels like weapon errors are almost a part of Half-Life, I guess in part for the "tacticool" approach.

The beretta 92FS is a cool gun, but the model and animations they made for it were kinda weak. It always felt too fat and the firing animation felt a bit too slow, the slide sits open for a little too long. The way the original glock model did things was much nicer, just the right size and the slide snaps back and forth so fast that you only really notice it when looking at it. That and it doesn't really make sense to have a 92FS in use by security forces with a full auto mode, but that's just nitpicking.

To load the SPAS12, you have to press and hold down the buttons on the sides of the feeding port to unlock the feeding gate. So basically you have to flip the gun over to hold down the buttons, because you cant reach them with your fingers. Sorry, i dont know the terminology in english.

cool video as usual, but i'd like to point out a few inaccuracies: Franchi is pronounced as it reads, with a hard C, like in the words "Cook" and "Card". The MP5 first person model only uses the handguard of a MP5SD, the barrel isn't suppressed, you can see it more clearly in Opposing Force's original cover. The M249 does have 50 round belts, unusual to see around, but they are a real thing. Keep it up, i love your videos

A few things: - SPAS-12 feeding lock - Gordon somehow being able to take all 50 of the rounds from his spare pistol mags and putting each and every one of them into a Submachine gun mag and vise versa within a fraction of a second before he reloads -Nitpicky, but magazines do the thing where there are an infinite supply of them, with all of them but the last, being fully stocked, even though you don’t have unlimited ammo (compare this to Escape from Tarkov, say) That’s just about all I can find

I know I'm a minority on this opinion, but I actually prefer the HD pack's Colt over the vanilla MP5. I know it doesn't make sense for an AR to use the same 9mm ammo pool as the glock/m9, but visually it just looks more like what HECU Marines should be using given the situation versus an SMG. And again, probably just me, but there's something about an MP5 with a grenade launcher attachment that just looks ... wrong in a way I can't really explain in words besides "ugly".

I gotta be hones, Half-Life is the ONE Valve game (aside from TF2) where it really doesn't matter whether or not the guns are realistic or make sense. I mean, this is the same universe where the military has access to invisibility suits, and they give them to leather-clad dominatrices. Or how about the fact Gordon even goes through a hazard course that involves gun as a SCIENTIST is ridiculous in itself. And in that course, you get sprayed with toxic sludge, set on fire, and have to fall down onto a giant, blood-smeared crosshair on the floor. It's completely over-the-top on purpose, like an old B-movie. So sure, the Black Mesa staff somehow REALLY needs weapons like rocket launchers and grenade launcher attachments, why not? And only the glock can fire underwater, sure! This ain't Counter-Strike, it doesn't matter. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Black Mesa was cheaping out on ammunition and weaponry just to save a few bucks. So even the grenades aren't really out of place, even though they were discontinued loooong before the game takes place.

The "SAS-12" shown is actually an airsoft gun made by ASG modelled after the Benelli M3 Super 90. It's called the Franchi SAS 12 because ASG didn't had the license from Benelli to use name but they did have a license from Franchi to use their name instead.

fun fact: 50 round MP5 drum magazines exist IRL, i'm pretty sure they didn't exist when half life one released/when it takes place, pretty sure the first ones came out in the mid to late 2010s but i might be incorrect, also the Army only uses the M24, the M40 is only used by the USMC (there might be slight overlap with SF teams usage nut overall in standard use these are branch exclusive, both actually are derived from the Remington 700 but both weapons have evolved differently), this might sound odd but my heacannon on having older granades in game is that they actually old stock used for testing black mesa developed hardware (their weapons and armor departments are implied to be developed starting around the cold war, the MK2 is similar in size and design to the soviet F1 (itself an older offensive model granade but still in use even today) or given the fact that black mesa is implied to either be a joint project with the US DOD, and either a former or current base (given the many missile silos, either for testing or formerly/currently in use by the on sight military personnel)

There are versions of the AR15 (the base platform of the M737) that fire 9mm rounds, but that isn't what was shown in the HD pack. Weird that they chose to change so many of the guns. It makes sense for Black Mesa to have the MK2 grenades. They were probably surplus that the military sold off to Black Mesa for use by security.

I can see Black mesa getting a wholesale on the Mk 2 hand grenade as the US army would face them out the marines are sent in whit old MK2 frags because they know there is stockpiles of MK2 there, same whit the glock and M9 in 9mm configuration (that said if I would be redoing HL1 today I would make it so that Black mesa uses Glock and Hecu uses a modified M9 that takes the glock mags (something I could see happen), plus the marine was back and forth know to get the absolute last of stock meaning when everyone else had switched over to the new granade they would still use MK2 for a bit. and if I added in the M4/M16/727 I would make it fire 5.56 and not be a SMG weapon but share the weapon slot whit the crossbow. and then have it so that only some HECU would wear it where it fitting (out door at longer range). also there exist a MP5 whit underslug that was in use I think it was the Malaysia Navy or something That said the Original MP5 is just weirdly modeled. Also as a secondary note regarding the AR in the HD pack, though the model itself is clearly the 737, there were many AR-15 platform rifles chambered in 9x19 para. Perhaps the one most notable and relevant to Half-Life would be the Colt 633 and 635 which were 9mm smg variants that were used by the US Department of Energy security forces posted at Nuclear Plants

if it's an SMG it's not an AR-15 platform weapon. AR-15's are semi automatic only.

​@@nybergsgarage AR-15 is the platform from which models like the M16, M4, 737, 633 and 635 all derive from. They all likewise use the same direct impingement gas system, lugged bolt face, and similar dyes to one another to produce. You are correct that civilian model AR-15's are semi automatic only, because they are not assault rifles. In the case of select fire variants, such as the M16, or M4, they are assault rifles variants of the AR-15.

Great video as always. Just a heads up saying "9x19 caliber" is a bit strange. 9x19 refers to the round's length and diameter in millimeters and caliber is a different unit system. Consider that 7.62mm is a 30 caliber round and 9x19 would be a 35 caliber round bit nobody calls it that. Cheers.

One think you forgot to note about the SPAS-12 is that the user needs to hold down the carrier latch in order for the loading gate to allow for shells to be inserted.

Beretta 92 series and Glock 17 are probably the best 9mm handguns for beginners while also being affordable and reliable, I would know as I own a 92FS, 92X and Glock 17 Gen 5, though the glock trigger does take some getting used to

In OF/BS the Spas secondary fire is treated as 2 conssecutive semi auto shots, you can hear 2 consecutive firing sounds when pressing m2. Guess it was the best workaround Valve's oopsie Gearbox came up with

Colt does have 9mm AR-15s, like the M635 that the Marines use. If Gearbox really wanted an AR-15-type rifle, why not go for one of those? That aside, I tried replacing the M4's clip with one from a 9mm Colt SMG mod for CS via MilkShape3D. Now it makes more sense. Lol. I also thought of shortening the barrel to match a M635's, but I have no clue how to move the muzzle flash on the playermodel. (I posted a question about it on GameBanana ft. a screenshot of the model. Got no answer.) It also looks kinda funny with the longer M203 attachment. So I'll just keep the original barrel and consider it a 6450 or 6951.
