I remember being an 11 year old enjoying every bit of this movie. Now being 33, I see the colorism, how the working class was treated, and the beautiful stories told about the family’s history-I can appreciate this movie even more today. Thank you for posting this!

As a huge Halle Barry fan I appreciate this movie. Halle also played in Alex Haley's movie Queen made in 1993 and she is outstanding in that movie as well. :)

I remember this movie well when it first came out. Interesting adaptation of the Dorothy West classic depicting a little known social group among blacks. Also saw "Jumping the Broom" with a similar theme. Couldn't help noticing how much more convincing Halle Berry and Lynn Whitfield were as "upper class" black Vineyard dwellers than Paula Patton and Angela Bassett.

Hatred knows no color, race, ethnicity, etc. It is everywhere; and is seen throughout the ages. The consequences are always tragic. However, there is one cure to hatred and that is love. Love always over powers hatred. I love . . . love.

@starquant Ok this book was written in the 1950's by Dorothy West. Should you get offended if this is how it was at the time? No you shouldn't. The book takes place and was written in the time that it was. Now, you are looking at it with 21st century eyes. Things were not simply this was in the mid fifties. I don't think she is done up to look like an albino. I've seen this actress in many films and she is extremely fair. Have you seen her in the Cincinnati Kid? She was blonde and fair.

@starquant The Grandmother is the matriarch of the family. That is why she is emphasized. Also, this is based on a book written by Dorothy West in the 50's. You are thinking like a person in the modern era. The idea of this book is to show how a family was and I'm hear to tell you there are quite a few upper class Black, Southern families that are and were like that. Being married to a Black man, you might know that already.

You don't want to start watching this .. I got to part 11 and 2 entire sections are missing .... critical to understanding the movie .... they are here in number but actually repeat ... like part 10 is repeated in part 11 instead of part 11 picking up where part 10 leaves off .. just a mess and makes it hard to follow - I can't finish it and am looking for somewhere to actually RENT it online .. too bad cuz it's a great movie AND IT'S NOT DANIELLE STEEL'S -- IT'S THE WEDDING BY DOROTHY WEST off Oprah's top books list Steel's is VASTLY different

@starquant Ya know, I really don't have that problem honestly. I act a fool. I told this lady that I came to return this necklace that I gave to a little girl that her parents didn't want her to have. The lady insisted rudely that I didn't get it there because she saw a different bag. She actually raised her voice to me. that is when I told her to stop talking, listen and then promptly get her manager.I don't put up with that. I have money to spend and I'll cause a stink if I don't get service.

@starquant You as a White person are not used to it. I am. You just lived it for a while and we live it regularly. Sure it hurts but you get over it. You don't hold on it to let you destroy you. I got over it. The people who say that stuff usually aren't the type of people who have any power. I take their power by not taking those words to heart. You, my friend, need to do the same. If every Black person got knocked down by the word Nigger then there wouldn't be a Barack Obama or Collin Powell.

I don’t even understand what appeal she saw in him. He was a black man with 3 biracial kids each belonging to 3 different white women. He came with too much baggage and didn’t have anything to offer besides him being black which I thought was strange.🤷🏽♀️ Race shouldn’t be a reason to be with someone, it should be their character and his characteristics weren’t good.
@walterdan3313 жыл бұрын
Hey just to remind you. This is not a movie for dark-skinned blackpeople and it is not representing most black families in the US.
@lunargoddess200214 жыл бұрын
@starquant Yep, that would be nice. Hey, life is long and can be hard for many. I try not to worry so much about what people call me. I get mad as hell, then I let it roll off my back. Most of the people who are name calling are doing it because they are too lazy to achieve or strive for excellence. So my sentiments are fuck em. Life is too precious to waste it on fools.

he movie doesn't honor the originality of the book. Halle looks nothing like the shelby described by Dorothy West. the 3 little biracial girls don't arch the description either smh Why can't movies stay true to the books for once (rolling my eyes) its just annoying:(
@TheReneex11 жыл бұрын
Amen! i never thought Halle was such a great actress though, her visual beauty has helped her maintain roles which could have easily gone to far better actesses without her over rated, A-list credentials such as this one!
