This is how it would've been played in 1985- short, stabby synths, pads degraded quickly over time because of the technology of the devices, there was a lot of New Wave influence in this one, which was clearly lacking in the Weeknd version.

I actually tried that with my TC-55 Tapecorder once. It's basically like a Walkman, except it's huge and heavy as a brick. And it has a bad belt in it that makes the sound warble like crazy.
