Honestly... You should've been paid by DC for this. Continuity is perceived as being such a barrier to new readers that they should do everything they can to promote the idea that continuity is optional. It's only an incentive to go back and read old stuff.

Great Video, I stopped collecting individual issues in 1994 because it was too complicated and more so now days. Now I just wait and buy trade paperbacks to get different stories I might like. The animated universe (DC & Marvel) and the cinematic universes help me accept that there is no real continuity, just good storytelling with. Characters I love.

I remember DC kind of winking at themselves in a holiday digest comic (multiple stories about different heroes and how they dealt with the holidays) with a Deadman story where Boston Brand (Deadman) had the holiday blues so he was ghosting around New York (or Metropolis or Gotham - some big city) inhabiting different people for short periods of time to remember what it was like to be alive and remembered then getting depressed and feeling guilty about stealing moments from people's lives and basically having an existential crisis before another spirit, a young blonde woman, showed up and talked him through his sadness - basically as a circus performer he was used to being acknowledged and applauded and so much of what he did as Deadman would never be known, and the spirit told him it was the good he did that mattered, not being remembered. And before she disappeared, Deadman asked her name, and she told him it was Kara.

I kinda stopped with DC when New 52 happened, but I recently read the Harley Quinn & Power Girl series -- it kinda seemed like Power Girl had something about her that should've been mentioned in this video? Like she was from before New 52. Rather than just the titular subject matter, this seemed like a video that was equally about reboots in general. I'd like to see a video about Illyana "Magik" Rasputin(a).

I find it sad when people say "long continuity puts off new readers", because what does that mean for real life that has at least 6000 years of continuity to learn from? Does than mean the people today don't want to learn how economies and history from 40 years ago or 100 years ago shaped the world we now live in, what works and what doesn't?

The continuity thing is the biggest reason why DC doesn't always need politics to sell their comics like Marvel. Marvel has made absolutely no attempt at resolving continuity issues, and they have like at least a hundred times more realities that on some level are "active", while DC usually focuses on a smaller number.

The supergirls are some of my fave characters in he DCU and it was really exciting to see them (and powergirl/s) at the focus because i think the different editorial attitudes can really be succinctly addressed with them easily (as you achieved, it was a really good summary of the crisis') (although I will say I find it funny Hypertime wasn't mentioned at all. It's certainly one of the more interesting approaches towards DC continuity, if difficult to explain. which is funny because i think it's the simplest approach to continuity yet) I was wondering if there was any reason that Cir-El was not included? (early-2000's supergirl. Superman's future daughter but secretly a trick/plot by braniac to kill him. she died in order to save him) She was only in the comics for a short time but I thought it was an interesting that her background was sort of matrix-y with a hint of generations in the mix. It's difficult to tell if she was a genuine attempt at a Supergirl that became unpopular & got axed, or if she was a twist character for a plot arc from the beginning. (also same question for pre-crisis supergirl's ghost/spirit thing having cameos in post-crisis books (she was in a holiday special short story; and cameoed in linda's run). Although I can understand why that wasn't included because it doesn't add much to the narrative of the video. I just feel the need to mention it because that whole concept is one of my fave supergirl things. )

I HAVE SOMETHING COMPLETELY SEPARATE TO SAY INVOLVING (SUPERGIRL) & (POWER GIRL) Now what if before the day came (SuperGirl) has mysteriously disappeared from known sight from everyone someone secretly carefully collected a small number of fragments of her DNA, and then that unknown someone started work on creating a clone of her; But this clone of her has a completely different first-name given to her by some other person who was working on the project with the mysterious someone who genuinely cared so strongly for the clone, and to add she has chosen for herself her labeled hero name which is (PowerGirl). Plus to add at first once (PowerGirl) had made her appearance her & (SuperGirl) were at odds with one another, and to add that the female clone hero known as (PowerGirl) was unknowingly being manipulated by her creators, and also to add she was being deceived by the creators business associates who had secret intentions of their own for using her. An so at some certain point down the line the clone hero known as (PowerGirl) she had her mind messed with that had turned her into a very obedient servant to the awful people in charge of the scientists slowly starting up laboratory business, and to add much later she was turned forced into becoming a super villain for a brief long time, and also to add once PowerGirl was freed of her brainwashing she tried extra hard to make up to everyone everywhere for her passed miss deeds. Plus to add PowerGirl then later began to train extra hard in order to become more skilled in her attribute abilities; Now that would be her controlling her temper, her patience, her strategy thinking process, her body reflexes, her hearing, her fighting strength skills, and more like that. But you should know there are two different stories about what had happened to (SUPERGIRL) in one her body spontaneously combusted into a huge burst of a sound shock wave along with a bright light flash, and this had happened when she was helping out with stopping something super awful. An in another story she hand mysteriously vanished in some unexplainable way with no sign left behind to what has happened to her, and to add at some certain point it is discovered much later that she was transported into the far future that then later she joined the future’s set of Justice League heroes team, and also to add she is very happy where she is at in fact she is much more happy here that she ever was before. Now in the first story when (SuperGirl) had died PowerGirl had shed so many genuine tears for her, and to add she dedicated her existence to become the type of person & hero that is much better then what she is right now in order to improve herself as a tribute to SuperGirl who had became her friend, and to add SuperGirl had tried so very hard to enlighten PowerGirl to realize her of her flawed point of views, and also to add of PowerGirl’s flawed way of thinking too; An so because of this PowerGirl had developed so much self respect for SuperGirl, and to add in fact somewhere down the line PowerGirl became thinking of her as a sister one she never got to have that she loved so much, and also to add that she missed so very much. An yet not much is said about the second story that involves what had happened to SuperGirl; All that is known she was transported into the future, she is part of the new set of (Justice League) members team, and to add that she is dating one of the team members, and also to add this future version of the Justice League is called something different in the far distant future year. Plus to add that in this far distant future SuperMan has been dead for a very long period of time, and there is allot memorabilia’s of Superman of along with a museum dedicated to all the former Super heroes, and also to add dedicated to the crime-fighting heroes as well too. “Oh, I forgot to mention the second story about (PowerGirl) now it mentions the first creation of the story about her; It is written in dimension number two aka Earth-2 there is a version of PowerGirl that exists in it that is on the team of the (Justice Society of America) & to add there is a completely different origin story for this version about her.”

I don't waste my time on the greater world or universe of any comic book company because they change the baseline all the time to reset the whole relationship based on real-world situations. If DC or Marvel lose the ownership rights to various comic book heroes and villains then they will change the continuity and reset the comic book universe once again. Should additional characters and intellectual properties are added into an entertainment company then the comic book world will re-adjust once again. It's futile to say in definite terms what is canon or not for comics because the writers of the books don't know themselves because they don't follow canon and alter reality in their storylines all the time.

DC comics has had too many reboots over the past 30+ years. Every time I think I want to read a current episode, there's a reboot that confuses the hell out of me. I always get my info from Wikipedia, the DC.com website, and of course, KZbin. When I bought comics, they were usually the Legion of Superheroes. Even they were affected by the reboots, which got annoying as hell, but I still kept up with the Legion. But the current Rebirth series seem to be worth looking into, though I'll still keep my distance from them until I'm sure that I want return to reading them.

I've tried to explain this many times. I never get it right. If - and admittedly this is a big if that no one can prove currently - IF the "Many Worlds Theory of Quantum Mechanics" is even a thing, and there can be more than one alternate reality co-existing at different vibrating "frequencies" whatever that means, then it doesn't have to be just two or fifty-two or any particular finite number. It can be infinite. It can even be infinities of infinities. Numbers of alternate realities that boggle the mind and then surpass even that. Every time you think you ate the last french fry, you look down and there's more still next to your Belly Burger. That's just the way it's been. That's just the way it's always gonna be. Infinite realities doesn't mean an Anti-Monitor can swallow fifty-two of them whole - or even fifty-two gazillion - and bring it down to zero. He only destroyed the ones he could personally see. There were infinities more that the Anti-Monitor didn't know were always there. Perhaps there are infinities of infinities that just show up all the time, as others die off. You cannot merge all the Earths into one Earth that makes sense, or even fifty-two that make sense. Think of an infinite multiverse as a constantly weaving tapestry, and what passes for the history of the DC multi-verse is not the entire tapestry. It's maybe inches of a tapestry that goes on for miles and miles and miles in every possible direction. It may have some imperfections around the 1,985th to 2,019th inches along one thread, a couple frayed ends that some seamstress lovingly darned and remedied with whatever she had handy, and perhaps some duct tape. This is just one very small part of a much larger constantly weaving and changing masterpiece that is perhaps so large even gods can't truly appreciate. When I read any given comic book, I don't have to assume that book is telling one finite story from beginning to end that is etched in stone and un-malleable for all time. Perhaps each artist/writer combination is its own thread in the tapestry. Perhaps each whole story represents one slip stitch in a crochet circle pattern. Maybe.. just maybe.. each separate frame is a window into a different universe, and these static images are chosen to tell a cohesive story that really never happened, because each and every panel represents a reflection into a different alternate reality. Perhaps in an infinite realm of possibilities, there are billions of almost identical alternate realities but in one of them Batman's cowl looks just a little bit different, or in that panel the Belly Burger bag contains only one hamburger and in the next panel it contains two, and we can't tell the difference because in both panels the bag is closed, and we'll never know the discrepancy is even there. Some want to believe the entire history of DC comic books is a single finite narrative that's very complicated but if you're patient and you follow all the frayed ends of each weave in the tapestry, eventually it will all make sense. What if sometimes we're not even looking at the same tapestry? What if there are multiple infinities? What if there's more than one multiverse? And each multiverse is like a crocheted mandala floor rug? Infinities of them. In nurseries and family rooms and outside showers and tubs and all over the world in every alternate reality you can imagine, and then many infinities more that you can't even fathom. It's just stories. They are what we want them to be, except complete. Stories are never really complete. Not if they keep being told. I think Orson Welles once said, "happily ever after depends on where you stop." In 1985 it seemed the Earth 2 Superman had a happy ending. More recent stories didn't know to leave well enough alone, and some argue the "true" Earth 2 Superman's fate is still open-ended. Granted, the real reason for all this absurd strangeness is that DC can't allow consistently popular and lucrative commodities to 'get old' while constantly hoping to make less consistently popular and lucrative commodities acceptable for a new audience. This is going to continue so long as profit margins manipulate artistry. That's probably never going to go away, but it's fun to dissect the results, isn't it?

As an added mess, don't forget there are slightly different storylines for the animated series, TV shows and movies. Good thing we don't have to worry about that, right? RIGHT?!? ;) Seriously though, Susana is quite right. You tell stories that people will enjoy. That is the picture. The background of the characters in the larger DC universe is the frame that goes around the picture. You can change the frame from time to time, but the picture should be able to stand on its own. A good picture is worth a thousand words, after all. =)
