The interesting thing to me with the story is that it *is* genuinely trying to be titillating, however the array of kinks covered means it's extremely unlikely 1 person will be into every kink, and very likely that everyone will find a kink or two that squicks them out. So instead of feeling like jingling keys at the audience, it feels like a genuine appreciation for kinkiness in general. Contradictively making it a more enjoyable watch overall even if a couple of the kinks are squicks for you. Not only that, but since it actually covers more than the same couple mainstream kinks that are in everything it means the kinks each character likes actually gives depth beyond their immediate characterization. Haruka enjoying abdl tells us something, Utena's obsession with playing the heel tells us something, Loco's exhibitionism tells us something. The most obvious things are of course stated outright, but there's threads of kink that can then be followed outside of the direct text that interact with their plot and character in interesting ways. The most interesting ones imo are currently going to be manga only. The age regressor and the blood play/scarification girl are really interesting

NO YOU'RE TOTALLY RIGHT!! I'd love to go more in depth one day talking about how each of the girls different kinky interests help add depth to their character, but I feel like it would be a disservice to go too deep without fully knowing the direction the narrative is headed. Also yess!! The new characters in the manga definitely add more depth to the story and it's overall message of sex positivity. I love Randa (blood girl) so much btw. Her dynamic with Michiko is really compelling and I like the parallels between their relationship and Utena and Kiwi's. Super interesting stuff

Some of male yuri fans not saying hornyness is apart of why they consume yuri is an amount of tact, or some amount of shame at their own desire for indulgence (and some of that is a lot of them being very trans and varying degrees of aware of it). But I guess some people are just there exclusively for the vibes/ athstetic tropes of the genre. -Why exactly that is the case would take way too long to cover in a KZbin comment, so lmao or something-

I'm generally pretty ambivalent towards yuri. I find girl couples cute, but don't have any particular fixation with or preference for them. However, in this case I make a pretty big exception as, given the nature of this story - and I realize it's a blatant double standard, but I'll stand by it - I don't think this could work (at least not as a semi-mainstream, technically-not-hentai) if it wasn't girl-on-girl. I, and I expect most others, unconsciously give Baiser _way_ more leniency when it comes to the, let's just say "questionable" nature of her antics than I would if she was male. Gender-swap Utena and suddenly everything gets a lot less endearing and a lot more overtly, uh.. "pee"-with-the-word-"ray"-in-front-of-it. I suppose you could argue that means I'm sexist toward men for considering the exact same sexual violence somehow inherently worse when they do it. Or you could say it's sexist toward women for arguably not taking them seriously by not considering them as threatening. And to an extent I guess I can't really convincingly deny that. So, yeah... Anyway, the point was this is a special case where I, as a cis-het male, I can confidently say "I strongly prefer it to be yuri" for reasons not motivated by horniness.

great video! also, I feel like an oft underappreciated aspect of Mahoako as a story, is how insanely good Akihiro Ononaka is at depicting battle damage. you wouldn't think his previous series was a very tame slice of life, because it feels like this dude was born to draw some of the gnarliest and most interesting battle damage in the industry. I've read a fair few shonens, hell I adore Chainsaw Man, and that fully embraces literally tearing off limbs and making people bloody messes; but it still doesn't feel quite as satisfying as something like seeing Magia Baiser get partially frozen, and having cracked and bloodied skin, with visible ice burns as she thaws herself.

It's obvious how much this show means to you by the way you talk about it. Not really my kinda show but you're definitely going to sell it to some people based on this video alone. Also that art is so cute ❤

one small thing that i noticed is that while most magical girl references are broad and are more to the genre as a whole, venalita is explicitly kyubey, to the point where episode 11 of the anime had her do the "face takes up entire screen and eyes stare into your soul" that kyubey does
@NerdyArty

Oh you're so right!! Venalita is def inspired by Kyubey especially with the whole morally dubious nefarious intentions

As a fellow Yuri enthusiast, what was your opinion on "Blooming Into You"? I thought it was the best Yuri I've watched/read. I'm a dude . I'm curious how you enjoyed it since you're a girl who's also a lesbain.

Bloom into is great! I think it's a really awesome representation of demisexuality and Aromantisism and the characters are very fleshed out. It's def a must read for anyone who wants to get into modern yuri. It's not an all time fave, but it's done a lot to push the popularity and localization of yuri and for that I think that's awesome

It’s nice to see a video speaking so positively about the series, since I love it a lot! Like you said, I relate to wanting yuri on the.. less tame side, and this show absolutely delivered. I was in love with it’s messiness and kink hell from the beginning lol. Such a good story and character design too! It’s one of my favorite mangas. P.S, I love your art 🫶

I'm late to this video because your video actually inspired me to go ahead and watch it! If I had to compare it to something, I'd compare it to the Monogatari Series. The way Mahoako blends the not-safe-for-work stuff into the story and characters definitely reminds of it. It's a shame people seem to view "fanservice" (which isn't even a good catch all term, fanservice can easily mean safe-for-work stuff. It just meant catering to fans) as being inherently shallow and unable to contribute to the media, when you can create a really good story by not being afraid to have both elements

This kinda reminds me of a lot of the opinion pieces I saw about Onimai back in the day. To this day I still dont know if i have the guts to watch Onimai lmao, but if i remember it correctly, the teenage horniness is probably where they line up.

Is Gushing over magical girls the name of the show, its no where in the title or the video description so when you said it the first time i thought you where just describing yourself or a verb. I had to go back and listen to it twice just to make sure.

For anyone who loves Mahoako, I always recommend “Large Battleship Studios” games. They’re all about horny lesbian fail girls and their fantastical adventures. I’d recommend “A Dragon's reQuest” first as it’s cross game references are more minor, while still having a bit more polish in the story telling and game play element over “Emberic of Wulhammer Castle”.That being said, Emberic is still very good despite how much of a rough first foray it is.

Something really important I left off as I was in my morning rush. While these games are happy go lucky silly adventure romps, they also deal with extremely heavy topics. Lots of having to live with the baggage of pain and trauma and the messy person it leaves you as. I feel it’s always handled tastefully, but the trigger list for each game should be scrutinized for each game. While they may seem long and silly, everything mentioned does happen.

_"I want to clarify that this isn't an in-depth analysis [...]"_ _"[...] even then, I don't tout my in-depth analysis videos to be super academic"_ And just like that, I immediately know this is going to be more in-depth and academic than 98% of the videos on this anime/manga - nearly all of which are insufferable, mindless clickbait. Anyway, yes, it is refreshing to just skip over all the "coming out" anxiety by being set in a world where no one is concerned with their sexual orientation and homophobia doesn't exist. Incidentally, the only other show I watched which did this was The Owl House - a series that actually _is_ intended for children. Go figure. However, due to a quirky little detail the manga never has and I'm certain never will bring up, I don't think it's even _possible_ to be heterosexual in this world. There are literally no men. Of any kind. At all. Ever. Not even little boys - all the children are girls. It's such a hilariously "I don't give a fuck if it doesn't make sense" thing to do, with the unspoken understanding of "This is a lesbian fantasy world. Only women exist here. How was anyone born? Doesn't matter. It's irrelevant." What makes it even funnier is how many people apparently read the entire manga and/or watched the entire anime without ever noticing until someone else pointed it out.

Aaaa yes I love TOH's more casual approach to queerness as well especially seeing Amity's mom disapproving of Luz not because of her gender but because she's against Belos! Also I was aware of the whole 404 men not found nature of mahoako, I think it really adds to the charm of this being a world where lesbians just exist and get to exist and explore themselves without any prejudice because no men no homophobia LOL

I'm disliking the video because some terminology like "dudebro" gives me the impression that your vids aren't something I want to explore further, and wish to warn future me when I inevitably find my way back here. That being said, I really like Sayo. Watching her war with her guilt over her fetish (like actual fetish) is something I can personally relate to due to my own shameful kinks being a thing I'm working on. So even though she doesn't get as much page time, I'm still rooting for her. It's fucking wild that I can point to this as a kinda good bdsm manga.
