Absolutely. HUDs are another element that's strangely ignored by gamers and devs-- a bunch of numbers, icons, crosshairs and stickers all over your screen are a permanent 4th-wall breaking reminder that this is a silly videogame you're supposed to beat, rather than a memorable experience. When a game touts "immersion" as a selling point but then clogs the entire screen with superfluous UI elements, I can't help but wonder what they're thinking, especially when games like Dead Space exist proving HUDs to be an unnecessary evil.

The issue with this is that games are designed these days to last 100+ hours, and great games aren't as rare as you think. This is 100+ hours for someone who runs everywhere, so if you walk you're looking at (at least) 200+ hours games. For someone who can only play one hour every day, this means almost 7 months to finish a game. This is way too much. They're just not designed around walking : people (especially adults) don't have that much time to "waste". But I agree that walking feels great & right in these games. I also do it from time to time.

Gamers often forget they can contribute immensely to how realistic and immersive a game can feel. I've been doing this sporadically while playing GTA Vice City in middle school, but the games that truly convinced me to slow down and adjust to the vibe were Far Cry 4 and Primal. Kyrat and Oros are mesmerizing, and it's a sin not to enjoy the world. Even Bannerlord can be enjoyed like this to a certain extent. But then came Red Dead Redemption 2 and Jesus Christ almighty, that world begs you not to sprint your way from one mission to the next.

9:25 I am that psychopath. I’ve walked across the whole map with Aloy. I’ve downloaded mods that restrict running in Skyrim, so travelling from Markarth to Riften can be a two-day jaunt. With survival on, camping, multiple followers… this leads to some extreme immersion.

Walking around a block sounds like torture. On thing I love is in games like Far Cry 4 where the day/night cycle is faster the faster you drive. Whether you are running or careening through the towns in a tuk-tuk, the world still feels massive because it seems to take a while to get anywhere.

I like the downtime, walking around soaking the environment, the sound, the world details, the view etc.. every time the game gives me downtime and I dont feel like progressing the story yet, I'll walk around to appreciate the world details usually for hours... I spent so many hours walking around GTA/RDR games, AC games, in cyberpunk and witcher 3, just feeling the world, feeling the moment... Its why I love Death Stranding so much... The whole gameplay is the relaxing downtime, its when I get to soak in the details while actually progressing the game... plus you are accompanied by amazing music... its everything I want to do in most games and it is within an actual game... for the longest time FF7 OG is my fav. game of all time, and Death Stranding manage to squeeze in along side it... now these are my fav. games of all time.

I'm trying to start the habit of reading books, and what I learned is that: you have no reason at all to rush the reading, you won't really sink in the story or the information you can get from that book, and I started to read one or two pages a day only, wondering and taking notes on what I think about what I read, and that helped me to memorize better what I'm studying or reading. And watching your video just made me realize that I could do this for games too. The little free time that I have to play games, I was usually just rushing to finish it as quick as possible, so I could make my time more ''efficient'', and not really enjoying what I'm playing, not really remembering the story or characters, not really HAVING FUN in playing the game. The same logic that was happening to me with the books, and I fixed it. While I was wanting to finish a game in one or two days, I could apply the same concept to books, like if I was wanting to finish a book of 500 pages in one or two days, and that is obviously insane. People can even take months to finish a book of 500 pages, why not the same for games too? Why taking months to complete a game is a complete strange idea to me? Taking longer to complete it I'll be taking a longer time to really appreciate the experience.... damn... thanks for opening my eyes for that bro, you probably helped me with my issue of not having fun playing games anymore.

@TheeOddOrange I realized this related concept because I stopped playing RPGs like The Witcher and Baldur's Gate 3, especially online ones for them being endless. I used to love them, but now they take too much time. So currently I'm into competitive games like Valorant/CS2, one or two matches and I'm done. With games like The Witcher three hours feels like nothing, so I started avoiding it. Connecting the games with the books made it all click. I shouldn't aim for longer play sessions, but for really experiencing and immersing into the game in the short time I have. Thanks for answering! I subbed to your channel, your videos are awesome, and you're not even huge yet! Keep it up, you'll be massive soon. Thanks again!

Playing Hogwarts Legacy I had the rule that inside Hogwarts I couldn't run, only walk, no minimap, no normal map and no fast travel. For example, one of the first missions where you have to go to the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, took me 40 minutes because I got lost and I had to orient myself by the sculptures, pictures and shapes of the stairs, but in the end I got there. On the other hand running and looking at the minimap would only take me 4 minutes. "Walking changes everything" based af.

As a related example, I feel the same therapeutic effect you get from walking in games whenever I'm flying out of a planet's atmosphere in Star Citizen and choose to use a shallow climb angle (5 to 10 degrees above horizontal). Sure, you can flip to 90 degrees and burn out of the atmosphere very quickly, but the beauty of Star Citizen's planets shines brightest when taking the time to enjoy the sights: terrain features and ground objects move by and shrink as the planet surface falls away beneath your feet, and as you rise through the cloud layers the atmosphere slowly fades from a bright blue to a star-speckled black. It really is a magical experience.

This! I am a big proponent of just walking in Video Games. I put a lot of effort into my RPG characters, especially in FromSoft games and sure, if I have limited time and I'm just looking to progress I will just speed run wherever I need to be but if I have time, and choice, nothing beats a good walk. Even in something like Space Marine 2. I could run or warp around the battle barge, but nothing puts me in the power armour like walking to where I need to be. You mentioned not driving but I will say too, in driving games, or games with driving in them, just cruising places can get a similar sort of feel for me. Anything to build atmosphere. Anything for the immersion.

I used to take taxi rides in GT4 as well, although the equivalent of walking in GTA is slowly cruising around the city, maybe actually even stopping at the lights for a change. I think I also managed to get a sight-seeing ride on a metro train roof, though I'm sure that was a lot more hairy! Of course the exact opposite taxi wise was going on a taxi mission, and then terrifying the customers by taking them on an absolutely wild ride! Good times!

I walk in allmost every game that gives me the option to but a major downside is that I became hyper obsessed with the beauty of games. Games especially with HDR and Ray-Tracing can look unbelievably real at times. Metro Exodus and Cyberpunk are 2 great examples. Even more stylistic Games like Witcher 3, Ghost of Tsushima or Hogwarts Legacy look breathtakingly beautiful. But having everything look like that is fucking expensive xD. I feel you. I remember enjoying walking in games as far back as the San Andreas days where I would at times even just follow the gang members around to see what they get up to. As I got into my teens and started playing online a lot more, especially fast paced games like CoD 4-9, BF Bad Company 2 and BF 3,CounterStrike, etc. I started playing even single player games a bit more " rushed ". But now that I am closing in on 30, and I keep hearing older people tell me to slow down, enjoy the moment, don't rush, I returned to my old ways. I love it. It gives you a chance to actually experience the game, the world, vibe, music, lore. Instead of just finishing it all up like it is your job. You experience a lot more as well. You truly see how detailed and well done some of these worlds are if you just slow down and take it in. Often times I just stand still and take it all in for a minute. Seeing how much effort was put in some areas just for a majority of people to never take a second glance at it as they sprint through to finish their objective. It is peaceful. Especially now days when the graphics, atmosphere, music gets so much better and plenty of developers keep us walkers in mind.

I Do This Too. Marvel's Spiderman swings high above the streets at the speed of sound so walking slowly through New York at street level is so grounding. You will quickly notice the copy-paste shopfronts. Taking this further in GTAIV you will often get knocked down by drivers when crossing roads at walking speed, which exposes the beauty of the dynamic model animation of the euphoria engine. I did it on replay to take in the experience of Liberty City. Refused to steal cars and delayed the story missions. I became infinitely more immersed in the characters and certain story beats hit me hard in a way rushing through the game doesn't. Discovered you can take your time in almost every mission, to walk to locations or even take the metro.

I love walking in games. But I think it's just a small part of a broader approach to gaming. I noticed that I play games way differently than most people. From what I've seen, the overwhelming majority plays games without actually trying to immerse themselves into the experience. They are chaotic, they don't try to think, they don't slow down. They just run from one objective to another as fast as possible and rarely take the time to just ENJOY the experience. When I play games, I try to role play as the main character. I do things that seem appropriate for the protagonist and avoid doing things that don't seem appropriate. I also try to respect the informal rules & logic of the in-game world, even when the game itself doesn't have any systems that enforce that. For example, when I drive a car in GTA V, I often speed and run red lights (cuz I play as a criminal), but I also try to do it in a believable and realistic way. I speed like a real person might speed. I don't drive over curbs (even though you totally can, and it won't damage your car). I avoid crashing at all cost, even though the damage system is very forgiving. I even wait at red lights sometimes, when there isn't enough space to realistically go around the traffic or when there are police officers nearby. When I play games like Spider-Man, God of War, RDR2 or anything else, I try to be as believable and lore-accurate as possible. I often walk slowly, I interact with the world, I take in the views. I slow down between fights to take a breath. I choose stealth or combat thinking like the MC would. When you role play and try to immerse yourself in the world of a video game, the experience is way more memorable and interesting. Such an approach also makes it harder to get bored, because you're constantly engaged, instead of mindlessly running from A to B. I highly recommend playing like that. My favorite games for IMMERSIVE GAMEPLAY are: TLOU 1 & 2, Uncharted 4, God of War & Ragnarok, Spider-Man, RDR 1 & 2, GTA IV & V, Cyberpunk 2077, Deus Ex Human Revolution & Mankind Divided, AC Black Flag, AC Origins, and a lot more.

This is such a good comment because that basically extends what my video about. But also you listed off all the games that I play for immersion, and thats insane 🤔
@CinematicSeriesGamingАй бұрын
@@TheeOddOrange For a long time I've had this idea for a cool KZbin series called 'LIKE IT'S E3'. Have you ever watched a well rehearsed E3 demo? They were always super cinematic and scripted, but what stood out to me was the way the player behaved. In the best demos, the player would always smoothly pan the camera to showcase the world in a cinematic way. They'd also feature these scripted moments where the player ACTS like the protagonist would act. I always found it very satisfying. I made 2 cinematic gameplays like that so far. Unfortunately they never blew up, so I kinda put the idea on the back burner, but I'll certainly revisit it. For example, I remade the iconic E3 Demo of 'Uncharted 4' - the one with the epic chase scene in King's Bay. I made a cinematic gameplay with no HUD, smooth camera motion, a perfectly rehearsed route, and some extra cinematic camera shots. I wonder if you also play in a similar way.

On my 2nd playthrough of The Witcher 3 I decided to play only by walking, no fast travel or gallop/run, had to stop at night in a inn/camp and no ATH. Definitely a blessing 'cause you can experience the world on a such different way. Once near Oxfenfurt at the sunset, I was riding Roach peacefully. Her hooves were treading upon the sand of the Pontar, the music started, I had the feeling I had to rotate slowly the camera. Geralt's head moved slowly too, following the camera and we had a view on an Oxenfurt on an amazing orange light. This was a small silly thing, but it was one of my best memories of the game. I remember when I first played Elden Ring's DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, and while exploring the Gravesite Plain's surroundings I just thought what if I equip a torch, switch to nighttime and just walk around? Some time later, I applied that same mindset for exploring some areas for the first time. It was one of the best decisions I got to make in any videogame, it just feels like a completely different game; you get to approach it from a different side, and that feeling is increased if the game has that ton of details/visual art. Also, for years I would ride the horse in Zelda TOTK/BOTW and just explore with no point. That's one of the best memories I have from those games. I love walking in games. It has given me a new found appreciation of the hard work that goes into making these games.

Bro I thought I was alone in this, all of my gamer friends sprint through that shit like it's a marathon... For me, taking in the scenery IS the escapism of videogames!

Glad to hear someone else is all about escapism 😊

I love that you mentioned boss fights. I realized that I do that all the time, especially with more intense games like Dark Souls. It was never a conscious choice, but just charging in never felt right, I had to size up the area we're fighting in, wait to see how aggressive the boss is going to be and basically try to pick my opening once I've built up enough of a feel for the matchup.
