The weird thing about King Boo to me in Double Dash is that it’s the third iteration of the character’s design in three years. To me the definitive version will always be the Luigi’s Mansion version. But it’s so weird that he had a complete design change in Sunshine and again in the Mario Kart series

The King Boo in Sunshine was fake & in Japan was Boss Boo completely different from King Boo. The King Boo in Double Dash would be the official King Boo design from that point on & it could once be explained by Luigi selling King Boo's Crown at the end of Luigi's Mansion.

But again, she was added for the same reason as Pink Gold Peach. If Lubba were chosen over Honey Queen, then Rosalina would have been the _only_ female heavyweight until PGP (unless you have a female heavyweight Mii). They wanted to balance out the male-female ratio in each weight class. The only female Koopaling is Wendy, and she's a middleweight. The heavyweight Koopalings are Morton, Ludwig, Roy, and Iggy

Weird is not usually a bad thing; one of the disappointing things about the initial Mario kart 8 roster was that it all felt so “normal” I mean yeah the koopalings are cool and all, but they took up so much roster space, then the Wii U era dlc didn’t do much to help adding different versions of peach and Mario. Rosters have to be interesting as well as contain popular characters.

I honestly prefer the weird and wacky character choices in MK7 over the 7 koopalings and endless amounts of variants in MK8. I’ll go as far to say that base MK8 for the Wii U has the worst roster in the entire series.

I dunno what KZbin has changed about the algorithm recently but it's nice to see it actually pushing content from comparably low sub counts on content as popular as Mario Kart. Great video, hope more people see it! That aside, something interesting about DK Jr. in Super Mario Kart is that him being there probably has the single most influence a game could have on DK becoming a Mario spinoff mainstay. I think that alone makes him the "weirdest" choice. Nobody really would've expected someone from the DK arcade games that had no relevance to the newer Super Mario Bros. series. If that happened today, he'd be more of a guest character like Link or Animal Crossing. But ever since then, DK has had the privilege of being in basically every Mario spinoff (including Party, Sports, etc.) which I don't think would've been the case if Super Mario Kart were made AFTER the DKC reboot.

R.O.B has been around since the 80's! He was sold bundled with some NES systems and was used to play two specific games with as a second player. His name is even an anagram for Robotic Operating Buddy. Mario Kart DS wasn't even the only time he's made an appearance in a game as he's also appeared in Startroppic which was released in 1990, F-Zero GX in 2003 and the Wario Ware series. He wasn't added into DS to "get people familiar with the character before Smash bros." He's been a part of Nintendo's history for a long, long while!

I don't mind a little bit of third party action, but it's a delicate balance for sure. Like R.O.B. was okay because he feels more like a representative of Nintendo as a whole (and really there's no advertising to be had from him. And tbh I didn't mind that much Link taking up a single slot (unlike the Inklings and Villagers which tbh should just have palette swap versions imo). And I'm also like the only person on the planet who would die of happiness if they brought back Don-chan from the Arcade game. But it is frustrating how, with only a few exceptions, there's almost no characters from games that branched off from Mario. Like there's Poochy and the Kongs sure, but where's the harm in making Ashley from Wario Ware playable for instance?

There's actually a reason DK Jr. was included in SNES over the adult Donkey Kong. His leotard made the sprite's different turning directions more easily readable than the all-brown DK would be from the back given the SNES's sprite limitations, especially on early releases for the console. This is also POSSIBLY why Kamek was originally slotted for N64 until an acceptable DK render was made.

I guess Toadette and Waluigi have something in common, they're introduced in a spinoff because someone needed a partner, Wario needed a tennis partner and got Waluigi, and Toad needed a racing partner and got Toadette

What people criticized was that Waluigi couldn't appear in Wario's other games despite of that. Besides the idea is not quite necessary cause many major characters actually exist before Waluigi, like Foreman Spike and Gene Yuss. The issue is Nintendo skipped those choices and create a brand new character instead.

Camelot was only suggesting his creation, not owning his copyright. It was a studio working for Nintendo under the contract, not an independent videogame publisher. And since Waluigi the character's concept is based on Mario, other companies cannot really own Waluigi as well.

Funky Kong, Dixie Kong, and Poochy are what I hope is the beginning of a trend of Mario universe characters being added to Mario kart. DK, Yoshi, and Wario should be prioritized over non Mario characters. Also forgotten Mario characters would be great. Captain Syrup, Mona, K Rool, Stanley the Bugman, Raphael the Raven, Wart, and Foreman Spike really need the spotlight over Link and the Inklings who have plenty of attention

Oooof good additions, I even didn't recognize Stanley nor Captain Syrup. Here are then some other ideas: Gino, Shadow Mario, Piantas, Goombario, Shroobs, Kinopio, Gracovitz, Charles Bloquette, even Cappy, Captain Toad (so fun being heavyweight because of the backpack), or Penguin Luigi (continuing with the costumes as Tanooki and Cat do exist), that are actually characters from Mario Universe and could fit very well. Even 9-Volt could be a fun one. Cranky Kong is seen driving in the movie, so, here it is another crazy but reasonable one. And out of this universe, from other games, what about the collabs we already have? I mean: Sonic and a Rabbid. In addition: I agree. MKTour has given us a lot of really good characters that may be so fun and grateful to see in a mainline Mario Kart, such as King Bob-Omb, Poochy, Pauline, Monty Mole... But as seen, there are still more characters that could be included.

Goombella is the 1st Paper Mario character I think should be added to Mario Kart. She's cute & has so much personality in addition to being the 1st Partner in what many consider the best Paper Mario game. I have no clue who Stanley the Bugman, Gracovitz, or Kinopio are, although Geno, Captain Syrup, Mona, King K Rool, & Captain Toad are iconic. You should ask if they have Smash Spirits/Trophies, Captain Toad got his own game. Wart needs a modern redesign, although I would rather see a modern sequel to SMB2 USA than him being in a Kart Game.

I'd also be quick to add Kammy and Vivien to represent the paper series. Fawful and Cackletta are perfect for the M+L series, and Geno and Mallow would be great. Poochy: I’m the weirdest character in Tour! 8-Bit DK Jr.: Hold my banana juice… Like, while Poochy is sort of weird, he makes sense as an extra Yoshi’s Island character, in the same vein of Diddy, Funky, and Dixie for DKC. But 8-Bit DK Jr. isn’t even in the same art style and isn’t a clone of Mario, so I’d say DK Jr. is the weirdest of that roster.

I can agree with all of these. While they may be some bizarre choices, I can appreciate the inclusion of characters like Toadette, R.O.B. and to an extent even Honey Queen. I cannot however say the same about Pink Gold Peach. Also, I want to mention Baby Peach also had a major role in Yoshi’s Island DS which is a game I grew up with and find to be really underrated.

Baby Daisy made way more sense to me than Funky Kong. Just because a character is brand new to the series doesn't make them weird. Funky Kong has not interacted with anyone else on that roster and isn't even a main character in Donkey Kong Country. Dixie Kong had also been playable in a mario title prior to Mario Kart Wii's releasing while Funky Kong had never been.

Super Mario Kart was released shortly before Donkey Kong Country so I guess Nintendo picked DK junior for their roster over DK because they didn't know just how sucessful DK Country was gonna be and since Rare was gonna most likely redesing the character anyway they didn't want DK to look outdated so quickly since they were still selling lots of copies of Mario Kart at that time.

Sorry but how does this theory even work? Not once have we seen three different DKs across the family tree. If Cranky was the original DK and grew old then the same goes for DK Jr who grew to be the DK we know. Even Nintendo themselves illustrated this in the Mario movie, where DK is Cranky Kong's son!

Baby Rosalina does not retcon her backstory, although I can see why people tend to think she does. The storybook has a simplified artstyle. And the hair color used in the book isn't actually that different from how it's depicted in 2D promo art for Rosalina. The clothing she wears doesn't ruin anything, because she was a Mushroom Kingdom princess. It makes sense for her to wear that fancy clothing as a kid, and star motifs are very common in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Maybe just me, but 1 character I didn't mind & would love to see return is Red Paratroopa from Double Dash. A cute & harmless remodel of Green Koopa Troopa we always see. 2 ways I could see Koopa Paratroopa return would either be as his own character again. I mean why not? We already have Dry Bones, Koopa Troopa, & Bowser + Dry Bowser. Alternatively, just add Paratroopa + red & green variants to Koopa. It honestly wouldn't be hard at all to add a wing flapping animation &/or have Paratroopa hovering like he did while riding passenger in DD. Here's a bonus. Koopa & Paratroopa both had triple green & red shells for their special in DD. But if Koopa got triple shells, he would stack them. And if Paratroopa got triple shells, he would juggle them.

I'm only slightly annoyed by a comment made in the video, but pink gold peach was actually a very good choice. She was made to fill the heavyweight class for female characters, and wanted to have a rival for metal/gold Mario. With half the team consisting of females, they asked the females, what should the female counter part material be made of. Most said rose gold and would make sense for peach to have it, as she was the most recognizable female. So saying "I hope who ever made this is in time out" is kinda rude once you figure out it was an entire team of females try to have fun making a female heavyweight.

Baby Rosilina is worse then Pink Gold Peach in my opionion. Because PGP at least fit a role only 1 other character did, that being female heavyweight. But Baby Rosilina didnt need to exist with Baby Peach and Baby Daisy, a Luma would have made more sence, and could have had alternative colors like Yoshi and Shy Guy.

Honey Queen exists for the same reason Pink Gold Peach does. They wanted more female reps, and specifically ones that could be used for the heavy classes. Unlike PGP, at least Honey Queen was an actual character before hand, and makes sense they'd wanna use her over some rando from games with less sales. Frankly, it was either her, or getting PGP a game earlier most likely.

Inklings aren't that weird especially with Link and the Villagers, they represented in-house made Nintendo series that are really popular. Hell, Pikmin related characters could've also make it in the game as that too is a in-house Nintendo series, But yeah they could've easily filled out the two Baby spots with Ninji and another Mario baddie instead of Baby Daisy and Baby Rosalina. Hell, they could've put in Baby DK and Baby Wario cause they actually exist in the Yoshi Island series. I just pray Honey Queen ISN'T one of the last characters for Deluxe, I'd absolutely would despise that

People mind cause still many major Mario characters like EGadd are still unused in Mario Kart titles. Guests are fine only when the base roster is innovative enough. (Neewcomers for MK8's base roster were basically Koopalings) Then Honey Queen is a Mario character so her priority is higher than guest characters no matter what. I don't think people who don't like Mario would even come play this game.
