You seriously missed out on a major part of what makes Kyle Schwarber valuable as a lead off hitter - his walks. He walked the second most in the league, right below Juan Soto. It's the three true outcomes, and he is VERY good at providing two of those three, walking and hitting home runs.
@StefanWB
@StefanWB 6 ай бұрын
Isn't it amazing that Schwarber was second in the league in walks but had an OBP of .343, whereas Luis Arraez had just 35 walks in 617 plate appearances and had an OBP of .393? They're both massive outliers, two opposite ends of the three-true-outcomes spectrum. It's still weird that Schwarber is a leadoff hitter, but nobody can deny that so far it's worked out nicely for the Phillies.

Schwarber was drafted as a catcher, not an outfielder. He was moved so he would hopefully have an easier job and could focus more on hitting. I believe this is why his defense is so bad.

How bad of a fielder is Schwarber? A still recovering from TJ surgery Bryce Harper learned to play first base in order to free up the DH spot in the lineup to get Schwarber off the field. That's how bad of a fielder Schwarber is.

His defense is bad, but apparently he was battling a knee injury in 2023 (he looked way slower than the year before). Plan seems to be to move him to DH with Harper moving to 1B. He also has worked pretty well as a leadoff hitter-has great plate discipline so he sees a ton of pitches and draws a fair number of walks. Phillies have plenty of power, need guys who can get a knock with RISP

It seems like he's the contemporary equivalent of Adam Dunn. Go watch Secret Base's video on Dunn if you don't know what I'm talking about. One thing I'd really like to analyze some day is plotting 4 True Outcome percentage ((HR + BB + K + HBP) / PA) vs. total offense stats like OPS, OPS+, wOBA, and wRC+. For example, I'd like to see if the 2023 rule changes improved the total offense of players with low 4TO% compared to those with high 4TO% relative to the 2022 season.

Does he make it in the hall of fame if he crushes 500 hrs but continues with this strikeout rate and BA, thoughts?
@StefanWB
@StefanWB 6 ай бұрын
I have two answers to this question. The first is it's hard to say, because every player who has hit 500+ career HRs is in the Hall, is a steroids guy, or is Miguel Cabrera and Albert Pujols, both of whom will get in once they're eligible. So even in the era of analytics, a guy like Schwarber who doesn't generate much value outside of dingers would still have a chance to make the Hall, but he also would stand a very good chance to be the first player who fails to get in. My second answer to this question is don't be a dingus. There is not a universe where Schwarber makes it anywhere close to 500 and even makes it onto the ballot. People say he's the modern Adam Dunn, but Schwarbs just completed his age-30 season and has 246 career HRs - at the end of his age-30 season, Dunn had 354 HRs. And Dunn only had two 30+ HR seasons after age-30 and was out of the league after his age-34 season, so Schwarber has to age much more gracefully than Dunn while making up a difference in more than 100 HRs...and then find an extra 38 HRs because Dunn finished with 462 career HRs and failed to reach 500. And how did HOF voters feel about Dunn's career? He received just one vote in his one-and-done on the ballot in 2020. I know Hall voters love counting stats but in some hypothetical universe where Schwarber somehow finishes with 500 HRs, would the same voters who scoffed at Dunn really look at an extra 38 HRs as being the extra dimension that gets a player into Cooperstown? Somehow, I doubt it.

Another stat that highlights baseball's "long ball" strategy at the detriment of "small ball". Back in the day a player from Seattle named "Dave Kingman" was the same way, he always swung for the fences. Hey if any of the above made sense just consider I don't even follow baseball, I'm just well read.

I suspect he hit for a decent average with the Red Sox because he realized what Mo Vaughn discovered. If you're a powerful left-handed hitter, you can play the game of either tattooing the ball to right or right center, or one-handing it off the Monster. Vaughn did it, Wade Boggs, Fred Lynn, probably others. A lot of lefty hitters hit for better averages with the Sox than they ever do again.

Worth mentioning that Fangraphs rates Schwarber's 2023 season a bit better than BaseRef, as he had 1.4 fWAR. Usually if a player has better fWAR than bWAR it's because his wRC+ is better than his OPS+, but that's not the case for Schwarbs, so I have to assume that it's because their defensive metrics don't rate him quite as badly as defensive runs saved does. But yeah, he's weird as hell. Baserunning is also a component of WAR, by the way, and Schwarber was caught stealing in both of his steal attempts in '23, despite the rules changes.

Stanton's OBP in 2023 was .275, and his slugging was only .420, hence his OPS+ of 87 is nowhere close to Schwarber's. It's debatable whether Schwarbs actually adds value to a team, but Stanton actively hurt the Yankees a lot in '23, with a -0.8 bWAR, while being paid $32m, while Schwarber was plus 0.6 bWAR while being paid $12m less.

Turner had a worse OBP than Schwarber in 2023 - .320 compared to .343 - but he did score more runs and accrued more total bases than Schwarbs, while obviously also being a much better base stealer. Few stats are as beloved and obsessed over by sabermetricians as OBP, but in my opinion there is no one correct answer to the Turner-Schwarber leadoff debate - it's a philosophical question, and you can't deny that Schwarbs leading off has been an effective strategy for the Phils.
@chrismarston4266
@chrismarston4266 6 ай бұрын
Phillies tried that for a bit and it didn’t work out at all. Trea had a rough start so they put him in a more protected part of the lineup, and Schwarber went cold when out later in the order. The Phillies lineup was so strange yet efficient. High OBP was leadoff, followed by the fasted guy on the team, rounded out by Harper, Realmuto, and Castellanos with a strong back 3. They also had Marsh as almost a second leadoff in the 9 slot for Schwarber to hopefully drive him in.

I’ll buy the fact that Kyle Schwarber is an unorthodox but nonetheless valuable player, but I won’t agree with the idea that using him as a lead off hitter makes any sense. I think the Phillies management is insane for letting him bat lead off. I don’t care how good his on base percentage is, he’s a horrible bass runner and clogs up the bases. Plus having him bat at the top of the order kills his ability to drive in runs. The dude has hit 93 homers for the Phillies over two years and he’s got less than 200 RBIs. Insane

Bryce Harper had to DH in the majority of Phillies games due to injury, and as bad as Schwarber is as a fielder, you don't get better as a team by taking a .900 OPS player out of your lineup just to keep Schwarber out of the field. They also played a few games with Castellanos as DH because he's also a black hole in the field. The Phillies are weird, man.

Max Muncey with the Dodgers shares some similarities with Kyle Schwarber. Never a great hitter for batting average; his best seasons he hit .263, .251 and .249 in 2018, 2019 and 2021, and the worst three seasons he had a .192, .196 and .212 BA in 2020, 2022 and 2023, so overall the trend has been downward. In 2023 his batting average was about .190 until he slowly rallied in September to raise it to .212. Muncey doesn't quite have Schwarber's power, but he also doesn't strike out as much as Schwarber either. Schwarbers strike out rate the past three seasons have been 27.0, 29.9 and 29.9% in 2023. Schwarber's walk rates have been 13.6, 12.9 and 17.5% in 2023. Muncey's strike out rate in the same time period are 20.3, 25.0 and 26.4% and his walk rates were 14.0, 15.9 and 14.7% in 2023. In 2018 Muncey hit 35 homeruns, then 35, 12 (2020), 36, 21 and 36 in 2023. He has never had more than 497 AB's in a single season; close to 100 less than Schwarber in each of the past two seasons, and the Dodgers will never bat Muncey in the lead off position. No one brags about Max Muncey's defense, but at least his dWar in 2023 was only -.01; so almost, but not quite league average. At the plate, Max Muncey is kind of a quasi-Kyle Scwarber, but Muncey is two years older than Schwarber and Muncey's defense is likely to continue to deteriorate going into his age 33 season. I have no idea of what either Kyle Schwarber or Max Muncey will do in 2024, but Muncey could benefit in 2024 from having a much improved lineup around him. Scwarber's walk rate took a significant jump upwards in 2023. It will interesting to see if he can maintain that walk rate or make improvements in other areas.

I dont respect players like Gallo and Schawber that consistently bat under .220 with power ... At least bat in the .240s or .250s for gods sake... 200 plus strikeouts disgusts me ... And then to bat leadoff with those numbers is even more puzzling ... You want guys getting on base with steals potential to bat leadoff... I love alot of Phillies hitters like Realmuto, Castenallos, Harper, and Turner .... But I cant stand Schawber since his cubs days .... And it bothers me that players like that get so much praise

the Angels culture of accepting the losing and let’s be honest.. Angels stadium is a bore fest and the 5000 true fans doesn’t cut it. I don’t care who you are, constant losing, stupid decisions from Arte and the lack of vibe at every home game wears on some guys and Rendon may be a good example of this. All this being said, Arte not showing this cancer the door epitomizes Arte’s ownership. Once the season starts and Rendon gets a RBI or even a hit talk be cheering him on. Angel fans should let him hear it every AB for all 97 of his 2024 ABs 65-97 here we come

You’re forgetting he also DH almost a third of 2023. So his negative defensive WAR shouldn’t factor in as much. He just isn’t that great of a hitter with such a high K rate. End of the day, overpaid and under achieving player
