The Weirdest RTX 4090 Laptop

Razer makes great gaming laptops and the Blade 16 is their latest addition to the Blade family. Bigger and just plain better. Core i9, RTX 4090 Laptop GPU, 4K miniLED display, you name it.
But there's something weird with this particular Blade 16 model. And for its asking price, perhaps it might be better to look at the other SKUs instead.

Gizmoslip Tech did a Blade 18 vs Blade 16 and got 104 avg in this same testing on the 16 and 119 on Blade 18. Blade 18 seems to have a 10w advantage during use allowing this most likely due to cooling. The Legion is running more wattage consistently due to the manufacturers usage of the 25w dynamic boost. Razer could update like they did on my Blade 18 where cpu was locked to 130w turbo. Now it’s 160w max. Also TimeSpy went from 22000 to 22340 just on driver updates. I’m sure 16 will get similar updates but the heat will cause the dynamic range to be tighter on the 16.

as previous owner of 3 razer blades: the OG first released 17" in 2011, a 16 and then the predecessor to the new 18. I have one sentence of advice. Do not buy it, or return it while you can.

Great video! Does the 4k screen work in 1440p in this laptop? Do you just lower the resolution from 2160p to 1440p in game? And how’s the temperature. Thanks.

ive got one of these machines. First of all it is not 2160p it is 2400p, and yes you can lower graphics to 1440 or 1600 (qhd+). When playing elden ring occasionly it droped below 60 fps in 4k max graphics. Temperature for GPU was slightly below 70 and, CPU was around 80-85.

Legion FTW this gen. I’ve tried the ASUS SCAR 16 4090, 2 ROG Duo 4090’s, and the Legion Pro 7i 4090 performed better. Sent the ASUS machines back and kept the Legion. It’s very hard to beat.

The Blade 16 mercury edition comes with the Mini-LED and rtx 4080. Would you recommend this over the rtx 4090 version then? Do you think with the 4080 you can still take advantage of the UHD resolution of the Blade? Thanks!

We can't say for sure as we've yet to personally try it but we're definitely glad that Razer has introduced such a SKU. But we would definitely say that it should perform admirably with the UHD mini-LED as well.

I would suggest buying the razer blade 16 with a rtx4080. You get a performance level that is more consistant than with a rtx4090 yet you still have enough power for the 4k screen. I have a blade 16 but mot the mercury version. So I can only use an external 4k monitor since mine only has the QHD screen. But I assure you: It performs great or at least consistant on 4k. Also the blade 16 with rtx4080 also gets very close to the blade 16 with rtx4090. Not only the lenovo legion 7 as it was shown in this video. Generaly speaking: Razer keeps a consistant style for its blade laptops, but lenovo legions have a more efficient cooling system. Four openings for heat dissipation pays off, but doesn't look as good as razer hidden two in my opinion. But that is a question of personal taste. Both laptops are great in their own way.

@@Sachrial1 thanks for your opinion, much appreciated! Great to know the blade 16 4080 performs well with 4k too. That means I can consider the beautiful Mercury finish with the 4k miniled. I know the Lenovo performs better than blade and it's much cheaper, but I prefer the Razer since it's sleeker, more compact, lighter weight plus it has a better miniled 4k display. The other one I might consider is the new Asus Zephyrus M16, which is also sleek and compact or the Zenbook 16 X pro OLED rtx 4080(but this one nowhere to be found).

@@MarcoMarfia Sounds like you are carefully planing your next buy. Good. It will be expensive enough anyway looking at current price levels. I think you are aware of it, but just to make sure: A zenbook lacks some of the raw power a zephyrus m16 or a razer blade 16 has. It is a potent laptop but not as performant as the other two. I don't know about the screen quality though. Maybe it is a better choice for you. Anyway I hope you'll be as happy with your next laptop as I am with my razer blade 16 right now.

@@Sachrial1the 120hz OLED display on the Zenbook is the major selling point I think, still superior to Mini-LED even though the Razer blade one comes quite close. I watch movies and edit photos on my laptop so display quality is important for me. Yep out of the three I think the Blade is the one that gives you more room for performance and raw power. It is the better all rounder with fewer compromises despite being quite expensive. My intention is to keep my new laptop for many years. I have and still rock an HP laptop that bought 8 years ago, but now it's time to upgrade and for me it is worth it to invest in one with enough power on cpu/gpu and great display to make it future proof. Hopefully I will enjoy it for many years to come! Thanks again and have a great weekend!

Do you think you could do these same tests with the Blade 18"? I'd be really curious to see the difference between the two laptops when the cpu/gpu/wattage etc is all technically the same.

Nothing weird at all. Just Razer shenanigans that I have come to expect. Games that are heavily CPU based also suffer greatly with Razer, including the 18", because Razer limits the CPU to 40W when the GPU is loaded. You will often see stilly clock speeds like 2ghz on P cores(!) when gaming with Razer, instead of something like 4.5ghz on an MSI or Alienware. As you can see, very GPU heavy games are performing normally.

Specifically the Blade 16. The Blade 18 has significantly better cooling than the Blade 16 and you can tell in the big performance boost of the 18" version.

@@CosmicApe yea but the pricing is absurd for the quality delivered. Lenovo is cheaper and has a much better sales support network. Regardless of cooling, the offering is overpriced as a first major issue
