Fun fact: Honey the Cat is a guest fighter from a completely different game. They're based on another character also named Honey from a fighting game called Fighting Vipers, having the same outfit and black hair, but as a Sonic animal.

there is no invincibility ring, its called hyper mode. you sacrifice a barrier to immensely speed up your character at the cost of a bit of damage, and gain access to some extra moves.

I genuinely teared up when I saw this video, Sonic the Fighters was my introduction to both Sonic games and Fighting games, and its one that I always find myself returning to, the game has actually had a competitive resurgence, so the game has effectively had a revival, thank you all for shining a light onto this masterpiece of a game and the gem of my childhood, I will forever cherish this video, you all are the GOAT's and I hope to see more of this game on this channel

Sonic the Fighters was (probably) my first Sonic game ever, I can't remember if it was this or Sonic R, but I remember it was one of the 2 inside of Sonic Gems Collection for the PS2, it is such a good game, and the remastered version on the PS3 and Xbox 360 is so good, it adds a good amount of new content with Honey, Eggman and Metal Sonic playable, unlike the other versions where they were only avaliable through cheats (and Honey wasn't even complete, and didn't even exist in the PS2 port) and has great graphics It is a really good and fun game, I don't say that only for nostalgia, but it really has fun combos and a really strategic, fast-paced and fun to learn gameplay, it is easily an S Tier game for me, along with Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Unleashed (HD), Sonic Frontiers, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic R (yeah, call me bias, I love that game, it is super fun)

This game has a reputation of being a “mashing game” but once you get into it it’s actually really dope. This game has a more balanced version of Alpha 2’s Custom Combos with Hyper Mode, a ton of deep, multifaceted mechanics, and it’s surprisingly balanced for a game from 1996. I’d be down for you to do something like 90 more episodes of this game

This. Sonic the Fighters and Sonic R were the only games I played through Gems Collection when I was a kid, and I unironically enjoyed both. I also played Sonic Drift 2 a little. My kid self had a bias to play games with multiple playable characters. Sucks that it only emulates the original version of Fighters, so no Honey, Metal, or Eggman for me.
