I was an alpha-tester for the ARPANET in 1969 when they brought a Telex machine to our High school here in Vancouver. We sent a 'e-mail' to SFU in nearby Burnaby,BC. The acoustic modem was used with a telephone handset to commuicate. It's been 52 years since this happened.

used to work for a company that was holding a huge expo (cancelled due to 2020), I had looked into the possibility of registering a domain with our own TLD and the *application form* costs £100,000. WHICH CAN GET REJECTED. SO YOU HAVE TO PAY IT AGAIN.

I was checking them out with a friend a while back and noticed you can apply to other big businesses for $10,000 if you give them everything made off it but its still insane. I think that mightve changed since then as well so it might be back at 100k no matter what. After that, if you get accepted, you pay by the year which is crazy. I can see why only companies and cities do it and why we don't have all that many funny ones

I once read that the business model for “.wtf” was similar to “sucks.” They also assumed companies and famous people would pay top dollar to buy their own names, or the names of their branded products or services, on that extension as a purely defensive measure. It would prevent anyone from developing websites that are critical of them using that extension.

.local is a domain made for MDNS protocol. It's basically the same as DNS but instead of sending a query to the DNS server you're broadcasting it on the entire local network. It's made so you can use a URL instead of an IP address that is only valid on your local network. In sum up it's only for local ip addresses. Used for printers, smart TVs and IoT in general.

Apple devices heavily use ".local" and will all register their host name.local on the local network. Stuff like "Sarahs-iPhone.local". It is only meant for the local network. I also think every zeroconf aka Bonjour device registers a .local for itself.
@BenderdickCumbersnatch

This also explains why the weird IP you found came up. It is a multicast IP. Basically the devices name themselves and broadcast their name to all listeners on the local network. You can then refer to the devices by their easy local name instead of IP.

Actually, .local is quite popular (still, more of a legacy) to identify the LDAP networks, so the domain accounts/UPNs are like jdoe@domain.local by default (you can still have more UPN suffixes). It is still found in production, though you can change it to whatever domain your company owns. I do have like 20 domains, like having the language references if possible (when it sounds like a phrase or a word, still works, still sad can't register .er domains, by well, it doesn't matter in the end).
