Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason & Science

5 жыл бұрын

In 1991 Richard Dawkins presented a series of lectures on life, the universe, and our place in it as part of the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures for Children. With brilliance and clarity, Dawkins unravels an educational gem that will mesmerize young and old alike. Illuminating demonstrations, wildlife, virtual reality, and special guests (including Douglas Adams) all combine to make this collection a timeless classic.
The Royal Institution Christmas Lectures for Children were founded by Michael Faraday in 1825, with himself as the inaugural lecturer. The entire 1991 lecture series featuring Richard Dawkins was originally aired by the BBC, but is now available free online, courtesy of The Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science.
Originally broadcast as The Royal Institution Christmas Lectures for Children, 1991.

I always loved this series. When people point to Dawkins being mean, I always point back to this time in his life when he had so much optimism in his eyes. I think what gives people the perception that he is “mean” is the fact that for decades, he has had to answer some of the most ridiculous questions known to mankind over and over and over again. I’ll always love this guy for taking those hits over all these years.

It is very frustrating to live in a democracy where most of the voters don't have the first idea how to formulate a rational argument or make a sensible decision outside of their own immediate self interest. Maybe that is what is behind the way Dawkins can sometimes be dismissive, especially of those people who really should know better.

".... he has had to answer some of the most ridiculous questions known to mankind over and over and over again ...>" that's because he never seems to debate the heavy weights. The closest was a cardinal & a rabbi (cant remember there names) but he never debates with a fellow heavy weight scientist. Time he held a discussion/dialogue of this topic with James Tour.

@@mina_loi : What a muddled and ignorant post. Erasmus Darwin was a deist and skeptic about religion not a "christian scholar" and considered to be an atheist by many at the time. His grandson did not discover evolution, but the process natural selection, that results in organisms becoming adapted to their particular environment. Whilst you could argue, in retrospect, that many people anticipated the idea of natural selection in part, it was Charles Darwin who completed the idea and put it on a firm footing with the Origin Of Species and many other works of original research. Darwin was one of the greatest original thinkers of all time and certainly not a plagiarist.

It's amazing how a fish that deep would know it needed a light to draw other fish in, and then have teeth, and the cuddlefish is nothing short of amazing.... He means that, from our perspective as land mammals, they look so bizarre and alien that they almost could have arisen on a different planet. It is just a rhetorical device to emphasize how strange they look in comparison to what we are used to. The problem with language is that so many people take it too literally when it is meant metaphorically.

I understand the technique, but isn’t it more amazing that this is what it takes to survive on earth? I feel talk of other planets distracts, not emphasises. Are Christians Bi-Jovian? Or is that a sin?
@Yui714
@Yui714 5 жыл бұрын
Christians deny the nature of their God's creation in favor of adopting conservative opposition from their peers within their religious community. They frequently confuse the views of their community as something that originated from their holy text. Their preachers find ways to manipulate the words of their holy book so that they agree with community beliefs that formed prior to addressing the Bible in the first place. There's a deep-seated belief that everything we know to be normal is mentioned or proven somewhere in the Bible and when something changes from the norm then it is against the religion. Any Christian who values their God would prioritize the truth of his creation over the views in their social network but we only ever hear of how they deny the most probable truth of creation based on evidence in favor of old-fashioned 1800's beliefs that aren't substantiated biblically. They also make the mistake of believing all scriptures of their holy book are equal when they vary widely in credibility and morality. Rather than taking after their prophet or their god they take after unsavory characters as those are the ones who actually support their denial of people, their denial of rights, and their denial of change. Their prophet's platform built on accepting people, permitting rights, and forcing change when they oppose all these things. Followers defined by being less like the one they follow than those who do not follow at all.

Immanuel, the anointed one (also called Jesus) is the chosen Son of man and the true prophet, of whom was sent to teach us just how we must always pray to God, each as an individual (all alone, in the secret place) and how we must live our lives. Where it is to be safe and well away from the many practises of Christianity and from all religions: - For all religions are led by the many fake prophets that Jesus has forewarned us against… “The Lord [our God] stands aloof from the wicked; he listens to the righteous man’s prayer.” - (Proverbs 15: 29) - “If you have ears to hear, then hear.” - (Mark 4: 9) - “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” - (John 4: 24) - “Beware of false prophets, men who come to you dressed up as sheep while underneath they are savage wolves. You will recognize them by the fruits they bear.” - (Matthew 7: 15-16) - “Do not call any man on earth ‘father’; for you have one Father and he is in heaven. Nor must you be called ‘teacher’; you have one Teacher, the Messiah.” - (Matthew 23: 9-10) - “The thief comes only to steal, to kill, to destroy; I have come that men may have life, and may have it in all its fullness.” - (John 10: 10) - “Take care that no one misleads you: For many will come claiming my name…” - (Matthew 24: 4) - “Many false prophets will arise, and will mislead many; and as lawlessness spreads, men’s love for one another will grow cold. But the man who holds out to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the Kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the earth as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” - (Matthew 24: 11-14) - “I am the way; I am the truth and I am life; no one comes to the Father except by me. If you knew me you would know my Father too.” - (John 14: 6-7) - “When you pray, go into a room by yourself, and shut the door. Pray to your Father who is there in the secret place; and your Father who sees what is secret will reward you. In your prayers do not go babbling on like the heathen, who imagine that the more they say the more likely they are to be heard. Do not imitate them. Your Father knows what your needs are before you ask him. This is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, Your kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as in heaven, Give us today our daily bread, And forgive us the wrong we have done, as we have forgiven those who have wronged us. And do not bring us to the test, but save us from the evil one. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, for ever. Amen. For if you forgive others the wrongs they have done, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you do not forgive others, then the wrongs you have done will not be forgiven by your Father.” - (Matthew 6: 6-15) - “Pass no judgement, and you will not be judged. For as you judge others, so you will yourselves be judged, and whatever measure you deal out to others will be dealt back to you.” - (Matthew 7: 1-2) - “Truly I tell you; if anyone obeys my teaching he shall never know what it is to die.” - (John 8: 51) - “Always treat others as you would like them to treat you: that is the Law and the Prophets. Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it.” - (Matthew 7: 12-14) - “I am the gate; anyone who comes into the fold through me shall be safe.” - (John 10: 9) - “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” - (Matthew 7: 21) - “I am the resurrection and I am life. If a man has faith in me, even though he dies, he shall come to life; and no one who is alive and has faith shall ever die.” - (John 11: 25-26) - “I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world” - (John 12: 47) - “Whoever then will acknowledge me before men, I will acknowledge him before my Father in heaven; and whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.” - (Matthew 10: 32-34) - “Someone said, ‘your mother and brothers are here outside; they want to speak to you.’ Jesus turned to the man who brought the message, and said, ‘Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?’ and pointing to the disciples, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, my sister, my mother.’” - (Matthew 12: 47-50) - “The disciples came and asked Jesus, ‘Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven?’ He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of Heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. If anyone causes one of these little ones-those who believe in me-to stumble, It would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!’” - (Matthew 18: 1-7) - “An expert in the law, [a leading religious Pharisee] tested him with this question: ‘Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ He answered, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind. That is the greatest commandment. It comes first. The second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself. Everything in the Law and the Prophets hangs on these two commandments.’” - (Matthew 22: 35-40) - “There is no greater love than this, that a man should lay down his life for his friends.” - (John 15: 13) - "Stay awake, and pray that you may be spared the test: The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." - (Matthew 26: 41) - “Teach them to observe all that I have commanded you. And be assured, I am with you always, to the end of time.” - (Matthew 28: 20) - “One of the criminals who hung there also mocked and taunted him: ‘Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself, and us!’ But the other criminal rebuked him. ‘Have you no fear of God? You are under the same sentence as he. For us it is plain justice; we are paying the price for our misdeeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.’ And he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ He answered, “I tell you this: today you shall be with me in Paradise.’” - (Luke 23: 39-43) - “For it is my Father’s will that everyone who looks upon the Son and puts his faith in him shall possess eternal life; and I will raise him up on the last day” - (John 6: 40) - Yours always, in true Spirit and in our one given prayer, 2gointruth, Saturday the 23rd of February, 2019: - (Matthew 5:14-16) - Where every minute (of both day and night) can be a new beginning for any one of us. Well, y'see Bob, when a mommy and a daddy love each other very much because they were born with genetic traits that helped them survive and be attractive to potential mates, they reproduce with variation, combining the mix of genetic traits from both individuals and a smattering of additional mutations to create a new individual that is not exactly identical, giving it different survivability and mating chances, which also get passed down. In other words, take a freaking high school biology class and stop being a moron, or read the wiki entry on Evolution and follow some citation links to learn more. ady nails I expressed a civil objection, in no way held hostility or hatred rather just question if this video in any sense was meant to be treated as a actual educational video. I was a atheist and yes i’m now a theist, for the very basic reason of evaluating all persons positions and views. Not slandering anyone who didn’t agree with my theology rather what answer was more plausible to the philosophical questions of life and if any scientific data wen’t in harmony with such beliefs.

ady nails It was actually based on all reasoning as i know it. When i watched videos of how the universe could come into being without a just cause, i found no reasonable answer. Richard dawkins never knew where the matter or energy came from nor has anyone produced a scale of how it even happened from “Nothing”. Then you get people like Neil deGrasse Tyson who last time i checked believed in the multiverse theory, which doesn’t solve the issue rather complicates it and it still demands how did the first initial universe came into being. The start of my doubts in atheism is when i came to the realisation that Atheists didn’t even know how it’s possible for the universe to exist without God let alone such views being a plausible hypothesis. With the kindest of regards, i’m not a “do what makes you feel good” kind of person. This is just my take on the initial questioning of my own ideology which led me to convict myself of what i thought was more reasonable to believe.

ady nails ady nails ady nails I would have to disagree again, Isaiah 40:22 “It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth,” i think christians and Jews has always thought the world was round. Don’t get me wrong i’ve met some flat earthers on all platforms, agnostic,atheists, and theists, that think everything everywhere is a lie and we need lunatic conspiracy’s to explain them. The bible has been accurate on plenty of things, the bible taught for thousands of years the universe had a beginning and the atheistic view was that the universe was eternal. it wasn’t until the 1960’s or so that because of some of Edwin Hubble’s work (of what he done 3-4 decades before hand) started to become accepted. So the theists were right for a century’s and only until the last hundred years or so have atheists caught up to accept something the theists already knew. Maybe God is the only logical coherent explanation for a reason, because without a all knowing all powerful being it is impossible for the universe to exist at all. From nothing, nothing comes. But it just brings me back to my point, atheists don’t even know how it’s possible yet you believe it. I think you have more faith then me to be perfectly honest aha. My position is illogical yet with all due respect, your view is even more at fault because you don’t even know how it’s possible let alone being a plausible explanation. I can provide evidence for my side. Christianity is based on the belief that Jesus is who he claimed to be, and if he is indeed God then i don’t need to validate the flood or the garden or anything in the old testament, rather if he is who he said he was then we should accepted nothing in the bible as anything less then pure historic fact. (I’ll leave it to you if you wan’t to open that topic).

ady nails This may be a little long to read and im trying to summarise it as sufficient as i can. And just a quick foot note, you haven’t given me a reasonable answer for anything you believe in yet, my beliefs are at least possible and regarding things you believe, i would still like to see the burden of proof on your side also. There were not a ancient hebrew word for sphere and might i add why would they say “ball shaped” if you could say circle and refer to the exact same depiction, if you were to ask a 6 year old child what shape a football was i think you would get the standard answer a circle or sphere but if you don’t have the vocabulary for sphere then it would just of been referred to as a circle shaped object. No the point i was making is like in today’s society most people who disbelieve in God hold to the big bang theory or some other recent hypothesis. My point was it was a general acceptance amongst people who never believed in a higher power. I completely understand that it isn’t a standard set belief, that a lot of atheists can’t even agree with each other and have diverse opinions. About pslams, it’s a poem written to praise God. it was not words of wisdom of God speaking or a prophet prophesying that the universe was uncreated or eternal without creation. But read carefully “for he commanded, and they were created.” meaning they were created, not eternal in the sense, without beginning but if he wants to keep the universe and not cease it from existence forever more then so be it. The resurrection of Jesus. The earliest objection to the early christians wasn’t to question Jesus existence nor to say the disciples were liars and the romans/jews still had the body to disprove christians. Matthew 28:13 “His disciples came at night and stole Him away while we slept.” This was the earliest objection to Christs resurrection. Now if the body was stolen away by the disciples, how would the soldiers know it was them if they were asleep and never saw such a thing? Obviously this was a accusation to not validate what Jesus said he was going to do. But if the body was still their then it would of been impossible for christianity to start the way it did within the very place they claimed Jesus had risen from the dead, if the Romans/Jews still had the body at hand. Over 513 people claimed to of seen Jesus after his resurrection, Jesus brother James never believed Jesus until he saw christ after the resurrection. You could argue that some were deluded and mental but i find it more of a struggle to argue they were all mental. But why i said this is because according the the Jewish historian Josephus, James died by a beheading from orders of King Herod. Excluding Judas 10 of the 11 disciples died claiming Jesus was who he claimed. But the biggest thing was not dying for what they believed because all the time people die for what they believe but rather they died for what they claimed to of seen, either the resurrection or witnessing certain miracles. If you put a gun to someones head most people would be willing to lie even if they were telling the truth but you never really see people who are willing to die for purposely lying. Jesus was either a Liar, a lunatic, or exactly who he said he was. To lie you need motivation, Jesus wasn’t a rich man nor bargained for miracles or any report of distorting people for money. Or maybe he wanted worship? He knew that by jewish law he would of been killed for accepting worship and being referred to as God, what brings into question would you accepted three and a half years of being called God, knowing full well you would be killed for it? I think most people would shun at the idea and Jesus said in John 15:15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.” John 13:5 “After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.” Jesus treated people like brethren not slaves so you would seem to be fighting a uphill battle if you argued Jesus was purposely lying for self gain. If Jesus was a lunatic then all i can say to that is, a random maniac fulfilled over 300 old testament prophecy’s and according to eye witness accounts healed countless people and impacted the world so much we literally changed the way we tell the date (2019) and refer to before him as B.C and after him A.D And if Jesus is who he said he was then you know that God loves you and died for your sins so that you may have eternal life. :) Jesus was prophesied about (Isaiah 740-698 b.c) [Theres still over 300 prophecies of Yeshua(Jesus) not quoted here] Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. (Immanuel in hebrew means, 'God with us') Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Isaiah 53:1-12 1 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? 2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. 3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. 9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. 11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

You will be free, if you attempt always to live by the true teaching of Jesus and ignore the practises of Christianity and all other religions; because they are all led by the many fake prophets who are blind to his true teaching, and therefore live only by their own false doctrines. Do not be like them. Follow only Jesus alone... “If you have ears to hear; then hear” - (Mark 4: 9) - “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” - (John 4: 24) - “Beware of false prophets, men who come to you dressed up as sheep while underneath they are savage wolves. For as you judge others, so you will yourselves be judged, and whatever measure you deal out to others will be dealt back to you.” - (Matthew 7: 1-2) - “Truly I tell you; if anyone obeys my teaching he shall never know what it is to die.” - (John 8: 51) - “Is there a man among you who will offer his son a stone if he asks for bread, or a snake when he asks for fish? If you, then, bad as you are, know how to give your children what is good for them, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him! Always treat others as you would like them to treat you: that is the Law and the Prophets. Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it.” - (Matthew 7: 9-14) - “I am the gate; anyone who comes into the fold through me shall be safe.” - (John 10: 9) - “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” - (Matthew 7: 21) - “I am the resurrection and I am life. For us it is plain justice; we are paying the price for our misdeeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.’ And he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ He answered, “I tell you this: today you shall be with me in Paradise.’” - (Luke 23: 39-43) - “For it is my Father’s will that everyone who looks upon the Son and puts his faith in him shall possess eternal life; and I will raise him up on the last day” - (John 6: 40) - Yours always, in true Spirit and in our one given prayer, 2gointruth, Sunday the 24th of February, 2019: - (Matthew 5:14-16) - Where every minute (of both day and night) can be a new beginning for any one of us…
