@CarterAutoRestyling I certainly wouldn't get tired of it. The way your brain works, the way you read and feel the steel is phenomenal. You make everything look easy and everything you say or explain makes total sense even if you think it doesn't it does. Wonderful series and definitely motivation to do my own chop.

That was impressive. Have you ever heard the term "Walk the Cup" It sounds strange, but once you get the hang of it, it beats freehand. The benefits are since the cup is on the work, it is a 1000 times easier. I apologize if this is old news for ya. General Idea. Keeping the cup in contact with the work roll it right and left advancing the torch. Keep the arc the same length,. Sweeping the flat puddle back and forth. Foot peddle will make it easer. The 5 variables in welding are. Fit up Current setting Electrode angle Travel speed Arc length Believe it or not,.. Believe it this is true 40+ years Steamfitter/Welder. I never saw or used a Mig Welder on a pipe job. Only Stick or Tig. I never made a down hill pipe weld ever. Never free handed Tig. You made that look easy AND in 12 minutes. Bravo..!

I had just made a comment exactly along these lines. My filing sort of creates a clapping affect (but clapping dents the teeth of the file into the work). This is sort of an affect I get lifting the file every time I retract it.

I was working in a small body shop thirty years ago. We never had a TIG welder. Whenever I see body repairs with a TIG welder I get kind of jealous. How I would have loved to have one back then! I used to work point after point after point with our MIG welder. It would still pull the metal more that I wished for. You can see that the TIG welds here changed the color of the metal only in a small area. That shows that it did not heat the metal to far from the weld and therefore did not shrink to much.

Your videos instill confidence in a person that has body work planned and is basically a novice. I can TIG weld and I keep improving. Between you and FItzee (Tony) with his cut an butt method, you and y our just excellent TIG welding, I feel I can tackle the rusted roof on my '56 Chevy Sportcoupe. The roof rusted around the backlight and some areas where my dad (an upholsterer and a foreman at Fisher Body before, during and after the onslaught of vinyl roofs) installed a vinyl roof and due to storage and a leaky garage roof, the roof suffered a tad. I think I can do the necessary steps to keep the body sound, looking good with paint and know I did my best and that will be better than trusting someone getting paid to do it. I will take more care. Thanks for showing this process of making a custom out of an old rusted hulk of a truck. I also purchased a Forney 220 Multi Process welder along with the Amptrol TIG torch ( lift arc torch, no foot pedal, thumb wheel on the torch handle for amperage control, extra cost) and I feel this will give me the flexibility I need inside the body for floor pans or places where a foot pedal will be cumbersome. If you want a fantastic welder, look into getting a Forney and they sell refurbished units (not always in stock) with a full warranty (3 years on the 220 MP) and have more than excellent technicians to walk you through any issue. One last comment, I learned to weld with Oxy/Acetylene. I think everyone should and progress from there. Oxy/Acetylene can do a ton more than the average MIG welder and should be in every shop due to it's versatility - steel, aluminum, cutting, heating, annealing, shrinking sheet metal for body repairs, cook a hotdog, etc.

You are very correct, no car is perfect. You are one of the few that could work in a major metal smithing shop. You have to be fast at every repair and it does not have to be perfect but as close as possible. If not, you get fired. Many a real good metal smith who did excellent work got fired because they could not get metal done exceptionally fast enough. Speed is important when thousands of dollars swing between burning in the air or putting that money in pockets and keeping the lights on. The cars and trucks coming in for repairs to a major shop are high end and the owner will want pics of the metal work. I hate cave and pave but as quick as that is, it is easy to justify on an old car that is rough, poor make and model to always be worth something but never going to be much. I see most of the channels are like that, rough cars, rough metal work, rough paint, rough brightwork. They do amazing things fairly quickly and nothing wrong with any of it, but I am cringing saying no, fix that first, not good enough, don’t put that back on like that. I don’t think some of them know how to shape metal well, I mean I know some don’t but why not try and figure it out? Sometimes for just a couple minutes time you can tap, push out metal and it is really nice. Other times with limited knowledge or skill, a guy turns the metal into tin foil so bad that nothing can be done but pave over it. My compliments to your work.

You are quite modest, very talented. Any time you can finish a weld and only need high build primer to get it suitable is better than most. This from a guy that has been doing metal work since the early 70's. I'm fairly talented, you are way moreso. Tig and oxyacetylene are way more malleable than mig. Tig leaves a smaller HAZ than gas. Couple of brief questions, Kyle. Why do you use a bastard file as opposed to a vixen file? Is the latter too aggressive? And secondly do you clean the back side of your weld area before you weld? Thanks, and put on a better set of gloves, damn it! Ones with fingers.😊
@CarterAutoRestyling
@CarterAutoRestyling 11 ай бұрын
Hi Brian, I did end up getting some new gloves, but these ones aren't quite worn out yet. Thanks so much for buying the replacements! I only use the vixen file if I'm working a large area of a panel. In this case the damage was contained to a small area so all I had to do was planish the weld and blend it into the surrounding metal so a vixen file would be overkill. And yes, I clean both sides of the weld.

True for me. Me and Doug were 15 and building a go-kart, time for some welding. Pulled out the home-made 110V buzzbox someone gave my old man that he never used, an OLD issue of Popular Mechanix, the one with the article on How To Arc Weld and the next thing you know, my parent`s electric bill doubled the next month. Plus all the 30 amp fuses when the 20s kept blowing. Sixty years ago and still the thrill of that first bead........ Felt like I invented fire.
