'Sea Shanty' is the genre, it's a song that sailors would song on long voyages. This one is about the 'Wellerman' who is a person in charge of giving out drink rations (I believe) and the reason it mentions rum specifically is because before they realized boiling water disinfected it, they found that rum lasted longer than water on a ship, so sailors got a ration of rum for hydration

The Weller Brothers Company (Wellermen) were a New Zealand based supply company that worked with whalers, bringing them supplies and commodities.

Yeah the Wellerman was like (old school america's Wells-Fargo Wagon). Boats and Whaler-islands would get "rich" in goods like whale oil that was useless to them meanwhile their actual supplies (food, tea, booze) would run out and life would get really hard. Then, when the Wellerman Boat came, it would have ALL the supplies they needed and suddenly they'd trade all their whale-goods for supplies and have the ability to finally feel good and party and etcetera.

Sea Shanties were actually Work songs, they were sung at that beat so that the folks on ships would know when to heave, or haul, for synchronous work. These songs were also great for passing the time while they worked, so two birds with one stone, as it were.

Correction, the Wellerman is the name of the sea vessel that the Billy of Tea is waiting for. Didn't realise, being a pirate, that some people may need this information.

@@cleverusername9369 : Wellerman brothers was the name of the owners of the shipping company, Folklore Edit "Soon May the Wellerman Come" is a sea shanty that refers to the wellermen, the supply ships owned by the trading company set up by the Weller Brothers. The song was originally collected around 1966 by the New Zealand-based music teacher and folk song compiler, Neil Colquhoun. The song has been performed and remixed, with over ten recorded renditions between 1967 and 2005, including by the band "The Longest Johns" in 2018, and by the Scotsman Nathan Evans in 2020. Just typed "wellerman reaction" to find out if there are others who cannot stop listening to this. It is beyond just cool. It brings you to that intrinsic feeling that music and singing was always meant to bring people together. And back in time people DID sing! They didn't have clubs, they had each other. Even when they only had one freaking violin or not even an instrument, they could come together and have fun as a community singing the songs they learnt from their ancestors.

Sea shanties like this one, called "The Wellerman", were work songs for those who worked on commercial sailing ships, to help coordinate their movements as they did their labors together. Before steam power and eventually other technologies, everything that it took to operate the systems on a ship had to be by pure manpower. This included hauling (pulling) ropes, and cargo, hoisting sails, and heaving (pushing) heavy loads around the ships, including the crank that would bring the heavy anchor off the sea bed. If it was a whaling ship, this would also include hunting, killing, then butchering (or tonguing) whales, mainly for the oil in their bodies, which was used to light lamps, and other uses (poor whales, some breeds were nearly hunted to extinction). It was hard, strenuous work. It could also be dangerous work; sailors accepted the reality that the next time they put out to sea might be their last, deadly voyage. These work songs, the shanties, became a method of coordinating the sailors' movements as they labored, which was neccessary for safety and efficiency. There were different kinds of shanties sung to different working rhythms. In the most common type was a call and response, with one solo voice leading, who would be called the shantyman; the other sailors would pick up the next part in unison, and this would create the rhythm by which they would all haul or heave together. Shanties also made the work less tiresome, and helped to create a sense of community among the shipmates. Shanties are the mariners' version of marching and jogging cadences in the military, or miner's worksongs. Once steam power became the main power source for ships, the shanties shifted to entertainment, and a marker of maritime history. They've been around for a good two hundred years. They're wonderful; check out more of them!

Sea Shanties are songs with a distinct beat, that were used for thousands of years to help people harmonize difficult tasks like Pulling ropes/lines, rowing, and other things that only work if in perfect Sync. (That's the literal meaning of "Heave, Ho!" Which is a common line)

Hi, I'm just starting the video, but I just wanted to clear up, seas shanties are a real thing dating all the way back since ships existed! Not just a modern creation. Sailors sang to stave off boredom, and everyone knew the words. The wellerman specifically is from the 1860s-1870s.
