As equal partners with a shared passion for cattle, Shannon and Rusty Wharton might have better luck convincing you their ranch is a slice of heaven rather than the drought-ridden enviroment locals know.
A mix of puzzle pieces built over time made the unlikely a reality for this military service veteran and a horse girl from Pennsylvania who carve out their own place in the cattle business.
“As ranchers, we do it every day. We take care of our environment, our cattle, our employees and we take care of our bottom line. That’s what makes us sustainable,” Shannon Wharton says. “We have to be sustainable to be in this business. We really have to be in tune to our grazing management plans, to our grasses, to the cattle be fluid with that and able to adapt to the changes.”
