So my source of information is Conrail Commodities by Jeremy Taylor as well as the National Railroad Hall of Fame's You Tube serries they have a 3 hour interview with the Union Pacific Merger Team that discusses a lot of this information.
Conrail was really the only east coast railroad to have there own fleet of refrigerator cars and in this video I discuss the decline of the food haulage on the railroad Conrail and the switch from refrigerator cars going to grocery warehouses to the use of trucks and intermodal trailers for food products. The food products didn't exactly leave the rails per-say it's just the way they were shipped changed from box cars and refrigerator cars to truck trailers and intermodal trains.
