I personally liked the WOT, but the characters are not the best written. All the women share similar characteristics: they get angry quickly, they are easily annoyed by the simplest of things, they tug their hair, their inner dialogue about men is very similarly negative, they talk about how men don't understand, and how the men should know better, and how try to figure out different way to manipulate men and other people in general. This guy's article seems very sexist and poorly researched, but yes, the characters, especially the women are not as well written as you present in this video. In fact, I would so far as to say many of them are carbon copies of each other, with different names, titles, and positions to make them seem as very different. I think my favorite female character in fantasy would be Rhapsody, from the Symphony of Ages series. This is how female character should be written inmo, or even the main lead from Mistborn.

He seems to be a wanna be author. The "joke" got him responses, got him noticed by fantasy readers. Not all of those readers enjoyed the Wheel of Time, unlike yourself as well as me (in fact I've just started a re-read yet again as I love it so much). As a result those who might agree with him could possibly be tempted to check out his books that he provides a link to at the end of his article. After posting the article he may well have seen an increase in his sales, which in turn led him to leave the article up. Anyway, whatever the true reason for the article, it was a terrible thing to have done. As you say in your video, there are areas in the series that could be improved, it is not perfect. The guy just raves about incorrect information, misleading potential readers of the series with blatant lies. In many respects he comes across like a Donald Trump clone, spreading untruths knowing that a certain base will never bother to fact check him. A rotten thing to do, whether as a joke of as a genuine article regarding a well loved work of fiction. I sincerely hope that he gets what he deserves, failing book sales and a thorough destruction of his chances of ever making a living as an author.

She's the kind of girl that would fascinate him and the way she and Jordan use the Saldean culture to aggravate Perrin to anger, letting him open up about his thoughts emotions, leading to improving the communication and deepening the connection to each other... is just hilarious and totally believable from my perspective. And she herself grows from a bit of a rash woman looking for freedom and glory to a woman who devotes herself alongside Perrin to fight the darkness and lead the people that have come to rely on their knowledge, abilities, and strong leadership. Her flight from a hated duty and position became a choice she made for people she came to love and the wider people they both want to protect. She's not perfect. None of them or us are. I legit thought I'm gonna click on the video and it's just gonna be Daniel saying: "no." And then list of patreons Just continued watching and I'm shocked. Usually I don't like the word "offended" - but it's blatantly offensive. It's horrible. What a shitty thing to do. P.s. the women in wot are the most complex characters I've ever read (I'm a woman btw). Yes, It means that sometimes I don't like them, and sometimes I love and appreciate them with all my heart. Because they are so real - that's why they have ups and downs, the same as everyone. (Another p.s. when someone is sterssed, chased and all around in a sticky situation, it's completely normal to be caty!!!)

To me, their beginning as flawed, petty teenagers wasn't a problem, nor that they were sexist towards men (Men are only good for fighting and think with their breast hair, hurrdurr) since it made some sense and we saw the exact opposite happen in history and fiction all over (G.R.R Martin has depicted sexism in A song of ice and fire as well which added flavour to the world) but that there was no progression in character in book 4 (where I couldn't bear it any longer and stopped reading). G.R.R Martin also showed nuance. There were different kind of men and women who had different values but (up until book four) the only women not bullying every man was Moraine. I mean, they do constantly bitch, do constantly ignore it when someone demands an explanation, they do constantly annoy the crap out of me. Not because they are flawed, but because they don't change their ways. Example follows (attention slight spoiler, duh) At one point Egwene and Nynaeve attack Mat even though he just saved them from being imprisoned. He fucking saved their fucking lives and they bully him with the one power. I lost what little respect I had for them at that point and it was a day later or so that I abandoned the series. Another problem I had were all that fucking side stories. But anyway... What if Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi had used the Force in a violent way to ensure that Han gets them off Tatooine, also for the greater good of escaping the Empire and protecting the DS plans? I wouldn't have liked that nor would I have felt sympathetic towards them after showing a blatant abuse of the Force, even though they would have good reasons. I am cool with grey characters but Nynaeve and Egwene are simply idiots in my opinion and how anyone can like them is beyond me.
@myhr23204 жыл бұрын
@@chrismath149 I love Egwene and Nynaeve. If you had keep going, you'd have red that they do apologize at one point, if very lightly, but you also get some insight about how they really are much more sorry than what they let out. Point is, all the WoT characters are flawed, they mess up, they wrong others, intentionally or not, but it's always motivated, and the characters are not unchanging, they interact, they sort things...and sometimes they don't. Like in real life. So yeah, don't sum up characters on one of their actions, it's also something we do in real life with people "this guy is a murderer", "she's a lier"...yes, but...there is context, there are nuances, there are motivations, and there can be change. It's not a reason to forgive everything, actions have consequences, but I'll be forever against the concept of eternal damnation.

Sappy appreciation comment incoming :) 30, F, Australia here - I am on my first read through, currently on book 8 and had been meaning to start the series 15 years ago - when I was about 7, I was in the library looking at the 'grown ups' books and saw that one area had books with cool wizards and dragons on the covers, so I told myself when I was a grown up I would read those books...anyway nostalgia aside... Two chapters in and I knew it was a good decision, halfway through the eye of the world and I was completely hooked...four books in, I knew it was now just going to be part of my life FOREVER and purchased all of them. have really been enjoying your channel as a little companion along with the books... AND the wonderful audiobooks. I had been meaning to start the series 15 years ago. Have also joined the lovely online Dragon Mount community, and also find myself listen to the awesome audioversion. I think your channel is great and is wonderful to hear your passion for it too. Anyhow, the other reason I chose to comment is that another reason Wheel of Time has been so amazing is that I have never experienced so many wonderful female characters that feel like real people to me. Jordan has somehow done the impossible of knowing *exactly* how women think and interact alone haha. Keep the videos coming, April :)

Ok, I am not a fan of Wheel of Time, I got five or six, maybe seven books in and just lost interest. My problem was, NOTHING happened, for three books straight, not a damn thing. I liked the characters, specifically Matt, Nyneve, Perrin and honestly the false dragon guy, can't remember his name (it's been twenty some years.) So I tried to keep going but after the second thousand plus pages of nothing happening I decided "if nothing happens in the next book I'm done" sure enough nothing happened, so that was that. The worst part was, none of my favorite characters featured more than just a "yeah, they still exist" sort of way. I left with a lot of unanswered questions. I wanted to know how that false dragon's arc turned out, why did Rand's father have a swordmaster sword, and many more, but they just were not important enough to go through the slog of NOTHING for thousands of pages. So, yeah, not a fan. This guy's review though, what series of books did he even read? The only thing close to accurate was everyone wanted Rand, everyone loved (or pretended to love) Rand, but ninety percent of the time it was because they wanted to manipulate him, it was justified, in story, why everyone was so gaga over him. Everyone, aside from Matt and Perrin (including the "good" guys, maybe even especially them) was trying to manipulate him, because he was the Chosen one and everyone knew he was the Chosen one. Yes, it was CONSTANTLY being brought up, of course it was, he was the damn Chosen one and EVERYONE knew it, that was kinda the whole point of the story! If anything, that was one of the more refreshing aspects, it felt more real, I guess, compared to most "chosen one" tropes. Usually it's just "oh yeah, he's the chosen one" and that's it, no muss no fuss, and totally and completely unrealistic. Everything else in the review was bullocks. Well, I, mean, sure but here was some obvious "Tolkien" stuff, but, that's NOT CRITICISM. If it was there wouldn't be a single high fantasy author to like, even more "low" fantasy, like Marten, takes a lot from Tolkien.

Maybe ill come back to it one day, but ive been reading malazan for months and havent been enjoying or looking forward to reading like I normally do. That being said, I still have immense respect for Erickson and his vision. Wow. What an ambitious man. We as readers need to understand that not every popular series will connect with us, and that doesnt make the series bad. The guy who wrote this article seems like hes trying to get under people's skin, like hes trying to go against the grain to appear cool. We dont need that in the fantasy community. Good on you for speaking out Daniel. Lastly, readers, dont be afraid to DNF a book. Ive been struggling for days contemplating if I should set them down(because im a completionist), but at the end of the day, we read for enjoyment. We read to delve into another realm, to leave our mundane lives behind and enter a fantastic one. So if youre not enjoying a book, set it down, and move on. It's been at least a decade since I read the books, but my overall memory / impression of the female characters was that (not all) but a lot of them really were just... so annoying at times. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for powerful female characters. The Aes Sedai and White Tower being a massive driving force in the world, the Wise Ones being respected leaders that no one, even from different clans, would dare to disrespect. The Seanchan being ruled by an Empress. Great concepts. I wholeheartedly prefer having female leads in the books I read. But when a lot of your dialogue is spent unnecessarily belittling the male characters and each other? They're just so damn arrogant and constantly vying to be the 'alpha' of whatever group they're in. I've never in my life enjoyed being around anyone like that, either male or female. In some of the worst cases it'll even come across as "Oh, it's a guy that's being verbally or physically abused? That's fine then. We'll laugh about it. He probably deserved it anyway." All I can say to that is... you can empower women without degrading men. Maybe I could do with a reread now that I'm not in my teens anymore, but... that's one of the biggest impressions the books left on me. That, and page long descriptions of the clothes people are wearing.

@XiongGou2 жыл бұрын
I think that's a part of the story though. I personally found myself annoyed by many of the female characters because of their arrogance and dismissal of men, however they do so with good cause. (SPOILERS AHEAD) It was men in the Age of Legends that brought about the breaking through their own arrogance by opening the bore. This brought about the taint, leading male channelers to go mad and brought about a matriarchal society because men couldn't be trusted anymore. At the origin of this story it's been 3000 years since the breaking so people's biases are pretty firm in their minds. Which is why Logain's arc and the Black Tower is so important because in the end they were able to bring a redemption for men and remove the stigma, especially of men who can channel by their efforts in The Last Battle. If you read the story to it's conclusion the barriers between men and women begin to break down and mutual respect and honor are beginning to be established again.
@Sa1d1n2 жыл бұрын
@@XiongGou [SPOILER WARNING] you need to re-read the books. The men did not open the bore - they tried to patch the bore without the support of female channelers. The backlash of the Dark One is what ultimately tainted Saidin. The bore was opened by Age of Legends researchers in an attempt to find a new access to the true source. There was no 'male arrogance' to it, except perhaps by LTT thinking they could seal the bore without the support of female channelers. That said, he had no real choice - the female Aes Sedai would not join him. As Rand proves in the end of the WoT - if men and women had joined together during the Age of Legends, they may have succeeded in reforming the bore and trapping the Dark One then. If anything, it was the arrogance of the female Aes Sedai in not heeding the call of their Tamyrlin that should be called down in this case. Also, the universe in the WoT is not a 'matriarchal society'. There are matriarchal and patriarchal, as well as egalitarian societies in WoT. While the Aes Sedai and Ebou Dari are clearly matriarchal, most of the societies in WoT have strong patriarchal leanings - with typically distinct gender roles. While the overall gist of WoT is significantly more egalitarian than many other epics, it definitely does not fit the overall definition of a matriarchal society.

Black-cloaked riders, Mountains of Mist, the Third Age (even opening almost word for word the same way, 'legend fades to myth' and whatnot). But the similarities pretty much end with that surface level stuff. I read the first 7 or 8 books one after another and had taken a huge break between 9 and 10...like...a ten year break. I am sorry to admit, almost done book 8 and I am struggling. The main characters make the same mistakes in book 8 as they did in book 1. Basically no growth in all but Mat's character. Barely any repercussions for bone head mistakes, all the characters besides Mat and Min have regressed in their character arc since the beginning (including Perrin who is my favorite). I was told by so many people this is a top 5 fantasy series of all time. I am hoping it gets better, but as of now, on par with the Hunger Games (overrated series)

Forget about Bechdel test not being enough, Wheel of Time definitely passes it in the first book alone. Egwene and Moirane talking about one power. And in the later books (by which I mean book two/three) supergirls talk about the Black Ajah. It is pretty easy to see WOT passes Bechdel Test

"His (Rand's) only flaw is that he sometimes goes crazy because he's just too powerful..." - well, sure if you ignore the madness caused by the Taint on Saidin or the voices in his head. Rand's going crazy from the Taint creates a ticking clock of whether he'll go crazy and destroy the world before he can save it from the Dark One. It serves to create story tension and (internal) character conflict when he questions his own sanity and ability to succeed. As a practical matter, the fact that Rand is so powerful and draws so much of Saidin makes it even more of a problem as it increases the amount of the Taint and crazy. Chosen One Trope: In the real world, we do have a magical prophesy about a "Chosen One" destined to save the world and all mankind - and people talk about him incessantly. In fact, there are entire religions devoted to him, wars fought in his name, and people cannot stop talking about him. Based our real world example, one might argue that people in the Wheel of Time don't talk about Rand enough, nor does he inspire near the blind faith and devotion that has actually occurred in the real world. Wheel of Time is not perfect. Frankly, I also believe that PoD, WH, CoT, and KoD could have (and should have) been edited down to 2 books. However, Garrett Robinson's criticisms are based on both factual flaws regarding the characters and their stories AND lack of literary knowledge around the fantasy genre. As for the absurd criticism regarding Jordan's desire to die before he's finished, most stories suggest that Jordan devoted much of his time before dying consolidating his materials and working with Sanderson to ensure that the series was completed the way he wanted it to be. There is no evidence to suggest that those stories are merely PR to make sure fans were onboard with someone else finishing the books to increase book sales. People are entitled to their opinions. It's too bad that they're not required to be based on reality when they express them.

Honestly, what gets me the most about this is that the guy actually did research, but only for stuff he thought he could pick on. He picks on Nynaeve's name, el'Nynaeve ti al'Meara Mandragoran. Except, wait a minute, he also says he gave up during the fifth or sixth book. The "el" at the beginning of her name isn't part of her first name. It's an honorific given to the Queen of Malkier. And Mandragoran is obviously Lan's last name, which she took in her marraige to him (iirc, the ti also signifies a maiden name, but I'm not positive). Trouble is, by the end of book six that still hadn't happened. Not only is Nynaeve's full name incredibly situational, popping up only a couple of times in the series, but this guy never even read far enough into the series to see it. He just looked it up after the fact to complain about it. Also, Man, now I'm really curious what the unprofessional bit that got edited out was.
@Dragon-eu8cb4 жыл бұрын
And their is a reason for names like that, if Elayne married Lan then telling people she was both a Mandragoran and a Trankard for the purpose of the game of houses.

I don't think Wheel of Time sucks. It's just not for me. I can acknowledge and respect the skill and imagination that went into it, but I'm personally not a fan. And I think that should be true of how we handle fandoms. Just because I don't like doesn't automatically mean it's bad

I laughed through this guy’s article as I have had criticisms of WofT in the past (loved the series, by the way) and none of them match any of his eight factors. I’m all for educated speculation but his character assassination was the worst example of armchair psych I probably have seen.
@N4RCissus5 жыл бұрын
I don't believe in character assassination I don't think Robert Jordan was a bad guy I just think that his writing was repetitive. At many times unimaginative. But he made a cool world. It was an enjoyable read when I was young. But after reading more as an adult. I go back to his books. They are pretty shoddy work. But it's cool how he did things with the one power and weaves.

My problem with both men and women in the wheel of time is that there were few if any middle spectrum people. Nearly every character worth speaking of had eronious assumptions of how the opposite sex needed to guided by the sex of the person thinking the thought. I am married and will admit that there are times when I think thoughts of "women be like..." but there are many more sensible times where I know I am wrong and that my wife is right. I didn't see enough of that in the books. It didn't ruin the story for me (which I have physically read or had read to me, thanks audible, more than 6 times) but was an issue I had with RJ storytelling. There were great relationships in the series, but there was a distinct lack of open communication between couples that led to the same conflicts that I had a hard time believing that people of their caliber would not overcome. The closest it got was the double warder bonded couple in the last book, and it took their minds literally being linked to make it happen.
@colesargent76765 жыл бұрын
I very much agree with your assessment. the assumptions almost ALL the characters make about the opposite sex got very old after the 5th book. It went both ways, but it felt like with especially with the women, there wasn't even one character that was simply kind, empathetic and reasonable. To be fair, I listened to the audio book so the way it was read may have influenced how I perceived the characters. Perhaps if I read the books instead my impression would be different. All that said, I loved the story and am extremely excited about the Amazon adaptation.

It was just a different cultural piece. Rand was not a womanizer and actually agonized about loving all three of them. It took Elayne and Min a bit to get comfortable with the Aiel concept of first sisters marrying the same man. Arguably, adopted first sisters can be closer than biological first sisters and the sisters are arguably closer to each other than they are even to their husband. Accepting cultures drastically different than your own is part of being a fantasy fan.

Fact check! Nynaeve is not the strongest non forsaken/current age chaneller. There's at least Alivia, Sharina and Talaan. Part of her arc is realising that after books of being told she is the strongest and standing toe to toe with the forsaken realising that she isn't the strongest. You're spot on about her character tho! And thanks for ripping this post apart. Its disgraceful.

Its so weird that these kinds of people don't understand that its not a case of "women being attracted to men is bad" the problem comes when the men never show such attraction and the women only ever seem to care about men and have no other motivations. That's literally not even sort of the case with wheel of time... every single male protagonist has a chapter talking about wanting to dance with pretty girls, so it would be weird if the women never ever expressed attraction to men. The amount of times this reviewer mentioned that the women just want to bone Rand made me so confused cause my reaction to read the first few books was "wow this book is incredibly unsexy and has 0 wish fulfillment for a series where the protagonist marries three women." Like, any time a woman shows interest in Rand, he immediately turns them down cause he clearly doesn't think of sex as a thing outside of relationships and marriage. Any power Rand possesses seems a billion times more like a burden than a thing any real person would want so its ridiculous to call him a Mary Sue... Also this is a world where WOMEN ARE IN CHARGE. It's literally a de-facto matriarchy where women are entrusted with all the power and men are treated like fools who can't be trusted with too much power. How could anyone read this and consider the women to not have agency when they're literally the ones calling the shots even on a systematic scale. Considering the white tower exists only for women, you can bet your ass that almost every single scene inside the white tower passes the Bechdel test with flying colors, so he must have just skipped those parts... The Shadow Rising starts with Min's entire motivation being that she's worried about Rand's status, and yet she mentions it I think one time and then never mentions it again for that entire chapter, focusing instead on the Aes Sedai and their mission and Egwene and Elayne and Nynaeve. This dude is a weird contrarian and disgustingly disrespectful to a person who died relatively young, unable to finish his life's work. Framing it like it was Robert Jordan's goal to die before finishing it is beyond ghoulish. I'm not even the biggest WoT fan but holy shit this was a ridiculous review and everything this guy publishes in the future should be absolutely scrutinized.

So, I was at work today doing menial labor tasks that I usually do twice a week. I listened to about 10 hours of Lord of Chaos. In this time, the audio book went through six different chapters focusing on Elayne or Nynaeve. Rand was brought up twice. Once when Elayne was asked about him by Siuan Sanche while in Salidar, and that prompted her to briefly think about their romantic link for maybe 1 paragraph. The second time was when Nynaeve heard of Elaida sending a group of Aes Sedai to Rand, and she was poking her nose around the business of a blue sitter... who in turn began asking about Rand, and all of the other Emond's Fielders. Lan was brought up once... and for two sentences. Six chapters, and the love interests were mentioned for all of maybe 6 sentences. Each time, the thoughts came forward only because someone else mentioned them in a plot-setting manner. Another point. This guy says that it was Jordan's plan to die and leave the work unfinished. Then why he personally involved in interviewing prospective writers to finish his story? Why was it Robert Jordan himself who announced, with great relief and excitement, that he and Harriet had found someone to take over so that when he passed, the Wheel of Time would indeed be completed? This guy is so wrong here, it makes you wonder how wrong he is about everything else... or if it was intentional, thinking that no one would call him out but just take him at his word.

You cleared up one thing for me. I always enjoyed the first book but considered it the weakest of the bunch because it seemed a near carbon copy of Fellowship of the Rings until future books went waaaaay past it. I know most fantasy authors borrow heavily from Tolkien but Jordan’s seemed so blatant that I considered it a weakness. But when you said that Jordan stated it was a retelling of Lord of the Rings in a more realistic setting and continued from there, it all clicked for me. Now what I thought was a weakness, I now see as strength. Thank you for that Daniel.

Added to your thoughts on factor 3: as a Charleston-area resident and long-time fan, I attended a book signing for Knife of Dreams, a signing from BEFORE he was diagnosed, and he said that A Memory of Light would absolutely, positively be the final book of the series. Interviews from that same time said much the same.

So two things. Firstly...while the whole ominous black rider thing is definitely Tolkein inspired, it hit me watching this that...thats about it for the Fade-Nazgul link. I mean seriously, they were black. I can't actually think of another thing thats the same between them. They're kinda magic maybe? Oh at least at one point The Nazgul do a fear debuff but its hardly their main thing. The Nazgul are humans who wasted away into being immortal wraiths bound to an object of power, who wear concealing robes because they have no real physical form on this plane. There are only nine of them, and they are some of the Big Bad's most elite and powerful forces. The Fades trolloc children with atavistic throwbacks to the original humans prior to mutation. They are physical beings that happen to have superhuman abilities, and wear concealing robes because they have no freaking eyes and are obviously inhuman. Their principle weapon is the fear gaze and they fulfill a setting role of elite mook, particularly threatening at the start because our heroes have no experience. Yeah 'heroes chased by ominous black rider' is from Tolkein and unashamedly so, but if you stop to think about it the Forsaken are MUCH closer to the Nazgul

Secondly, and this is where I have to grudgingly...defend is the wrong word, but understand the writer fo this article. If he's talking about what I think he is, the arc where the girls are stuck in the circus IS *way* longer than it should be and does largely consist of them griping at each other. Realistic it may be, but it is unnecessarily long and could EASILY be read as sexist tropes of women being bitchy at each other. (Personally I read it as less sorting out power dynamics and more cabin fever). Part of the problem I think is that whilst the boys got their section of soap opera bitching at each other, largely in book two, it was a much shorter segment and felt more earned - Rand is deliberately trying to push them away and they are lacking the info to make him seem like not an arsehole. Add on to the fact that whenever there's a monogender group in the books its always women - the male characters get split up from each other early on in the series and then spend their time in mixed groups (okay Mat is in an all male bit for a bit, but only a short time, and they're not main characters). Since the characters have to be in conflict for there to be story, its obviously going to look like women are arguing with each other more than men do. And, again, (imo) that first circus arc was really really drawn out and dull with pointless side bits. So I can easily see someone getting frustrated there. This doesn't excuse...well pretty much anythign else in this article.
@AhsimNreiziev5 жыл бұрын
+[Wirm] Next time you re-read the series, I recommend trying to view the Circus Arc as what it was meant to be: a Buddy Cop / Antagonistic Duo "good cop"/"bad cop" Comedy with Nynaeve and Elayne being our dynamic and utterly hilarious duo. If you view it through this lens, you might find pure comedic gold where previously you saw sexism, poor pacing and annoying Characters.

6:30 To add to your point, I forget where I read it, but I read somewhere that most fantasy authors do one of two things in regards to Tolkien. They either imitate/pay homage to his work OR they try their hardest to be completely different in every way. An an example of the former being Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, and one example of the latter being George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire as he himself has stated what influences Tolkien had. I believe he said in an interview something along the lines of "What were Aragorn's policies as king regarding the surviving orcs after Sauron's fall? Did he hunt them down for extermination or leave them alone?"
