So if you are going to have to be level 4 or 5 to work at the distillery what are you gonna do Daniel? Just messin but good luck on your endeavors be interesting to see what you come up with. On a whisk(e)y topic I find myself having a hard time distinguishing the flavor of peat. I keep imagining it being somewhere between getting smoke from a fire and like the charred bits on food which I assume is not close at all.
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
Watch from afar ;-) I use a personal trick to distinguish using more pattern language from right brain. This is absolutely not a universal thing, because it is so dependent on personal history and descriptive language. But here's the example. You know how pain can be both dull or sharp? Cuts = sharp and bruise = dull? I separate the effects of smoke and wood the same way in single malt. If the rich complicated flavors have pointy edges, I figure it's the smoke effect. If the rich complicated flavors have dull edges, I figure I"m experiencing the wood effect. This completely falls apart when applied to new oak because the charr starts blurring the lines. But I find it fairly effective in whisky aged in used oak, like scotch.
@trinityzaku7 жыл бұрын
Ok that makes sense.

Cannot wait to get my hands on your EXPRESSIONS (just for you Rex). Calling in here from Santa Cruz, CA, and we have a very nice micro-distiller here called Venus Spirits that makes excellent products all around (whiskies, gin, aquavit, and an agave spirit), but they make a damn fine single malt whiskey, and one of the most distinctive bourbons I have ever tried. I will see what I can do about getting you a sampling of their wares for the vault.

what could be a good smoky whisky to start? i think the only smoky scotch that i have tried is the Johnny Walker and very curious on the Talisker since is in the green label. Nice videos.
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
I would start with a blend that has smoky whisky in it, then work your way into single malts. Black Bottle, Johnnie Walker Black, etc are a fantastic way to introduce smoky to your palate. Then try out some smokier Highland and Island Whisky, like Highland Park, Talisker, Jura, etc. Good luck on the journey!

Best thing to do would be to start reading up on distilling, then find the closest one to you and see if can volunteer. Then learn as much as you can. there are a ton of kickass distilleries in Texas. Balcones - Waco; Garrison Brothers in North San Antonio; Treaty Oak here in Austin, and dozens more across the state.

Hey Guys! Just so you know, all your vids, even 2 years ago are still relevant because new cats like myself will always be coming along. One of my adviser's suggested the Tamdhu cask strength, the second one you did here. I'm on my 3rd glass in as many days while watching this and YES! I thought the same thing, top end of the sherry barrel - I like the sherry cask strengths I've had over like plain oak for example or low ABV's. This is what I thought right away, and I'm glad to see you confirmed my suspicion! So for a budding scotch student, "FUCKING A! Daniel called out just what I was getting!" it's kind of a bid deal as one of your fans the last 6 months with you cats. I'm up to 29 different bottles, been using you along the way to help me learn. Keep rocking!

So first of all: I freaking love your videos and after seeing you on the modern rogue I have since been watching nearly every single video of the whisky vault in the past 2-3 weeks. I finally can tell the difference between the different whisk(e)ys and am very happy about that. So after watching maybe half of the series I decided I wanted to buy (sorry Rex) a bottle myself -knowing that i quite like peaty whiskies, which i got the chance to try a few times by now. So I went with Laphroaig Triple Wood and I love it. My question is- what would you recommend as the next (budget) gateways for a beginner- no matter if scotch, Irish or bourbon? My thoughts were maybe green spot and McKenna, though the latter is hard to find here in Germany (or rather: hard to find for an appropriate price- it's about 60-70 bucks) Also a comparison and definition of the "classic" islay, highland, island and so on would be very interesting for me. So again: keep up the great work an I would love to hear your thoughts!
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
If you loved Laphroaig triple Wood, you are already well on your way to a great new world ;-) McKenna is awesome but not 70 bucks awesome. Definitely green spot. Give me some names of bourbons you're finding under 30 in Germany. I can give some guidance on that.
@malzbiervonaldi7 жыл бұрын
Well of course you can get your typical Jim and Jack in every store (yeah, every grocery store because Germany) but besides that I found Old Grad Dad (by Jim beam I think), bulleit, Evan Williams, wild turkey 81, wild turkey 101, wild turkey 8 years, buffalo trace, old crow, maker's mark red seal, Ezra brooks, four roses small batch, knob creek, Elijah Craig 12 years, four roses single barrel 100 proof and Rebel yell reserve, all for under 30€. Some of those sound familiar, some don't ring any bell whatsoever. I guess you could find many more but these were just from a quick look at a few websites.

I'd be up for donating a bottle or two if you let me know how. I got a sommelier friend who gets me wholesale prices on things that like. The main distilleries in the Bay Area are St. George's and Sonoma County Distilling, but there are a few smaller ones as well. A lot of rye whiskey out here too. Supposedly there are some good ones in Washington and Oregon. Rogue brewery makes a whiskey infused with hops I haven't tried yet but looks interesting. Congrats on the distillery! I was wondering when you were gonna make your own whiskey, but had no idea you were gonna go all out like that. Now I REALLY want to take the class.

Serious Q - the 18 yr old will be starting to print batch numbers on the label. Does the flavour vary enough for a batch number to be important? I know there is differences in the water and the barley each season but is this not dealt with by mixing barrels to provide consistency?
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
I would guess that the variance would be so subtle you would find it almost impossible to distinguish without a very advanced palate. But that's supposition. I'll have to try it out in real life ;-)
@dresh91227 жыл бұрын
That's my thinking, and I can understand it for a single cask bottling by why differentiate with batch numbers if they are of no practical value? I am unaware of any law regarding batch numbering with regards to traceability/trackability, I assumed that it was for some other reason, is it maybe for making it more collectable?
