I bought a bottle of Balvenie Caribbean cask during lockdown, partially out of binge watching Westworld (it's the choice drink of one of the characters). It set me on a course of buying more whiskies and I've now gotten through Glenmorangie, Macallan, Dalwhinnie, Bowmore and Talikser. I guess lockdown was good for something.

Instead of quintessential whiskeys for each region, you could go through the basic flavor profiles each one is known for. Then give some examples of a gateway whiskey to start exploring each region. I'm currently taking a good friend on a whiskey "journey" and could use some ideas on good ones to start him with.

Yes! As you've prob guessed, I enjoy the informative stuff. I feel it allows you to enjoy whiskey more and to help others enjoy it more as well. Rex may act bored with it, but he can't deny that he wouldn't appreciate all that whiskey nearly as much if you weren't there to tell him about it.

As a newly anointed MB, I've been watching random Vault videos I've missed out on. KZbin recommended this one, and it happened to be for a scotch I've had! I didn't like the double cask on the first go compared to the regular Macallan 12, but once I added just a touch of water, the flavor profile completed shifted and was far more appealing. Still working on my tasting vocabulary.

I have mentioned on a couple other videos of the whiskey vault (not that I expect you to remember) how the first Scotch I ever bought and tried was the MaCallan 12 Double Cask back when I knew absolute zero about whiskey and figured they were all the same. and how the macallan was so bad I almost died. but since i started watching this series i have tried it a couple more times and the only flavor I ever got was dirt. i am not even being a smart hiney that's exactly what I taste. so the question is: how long does one need to drink whiskey before they can make flavor distinctions? or could it be my brain has no reference points for what it is tasting and cant get past the harsh peaty flavors of scotch?
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
It will take awhile, and it's totally different for everyone. It really is like a "wall" as Lew Bryson refers to it, where on one side all you get is the more dominant alcohol and burnt notes, and after a whole world opens up to you.

Mac 12 is expensive in Canada at $100. And this new double cask is not as good as the old sherry 12. But at least it has an age statement. Pretty sure they had to do that because of the terrible sales from the non age statement swig that they were trying to dump on us. For the price Benriach 12 is simply amazing. A real complex delicious sherry monster.

Corey Martin - Big Poppa Macallan 12 is actually cheaper than GlenDronach 12 where I live. I like it more as well. GD 18 isn’t available for purchase, but I’ve tried it. I’d take Mac 18 over it if they cost the same, but GD 18 is significantly cheaper in states where they do actually sell it, so it’s probably the better buy. Of course, I’ve never had a full bottle of the Allardice, so I’m not sure if it stands up as well as Mac 18.

it is a 100 dollars in canada , i bought a bottle yesterday but it not open yet , i hope it good :)

$40? This is $120 in Canada at the government stores now damn. 5 years ago that would have been 55 USD

Very middle of the road on this one. At the same 57$ price point as 12yr sherry I would never pick this over the the standard bottling. It would have been better at 46%

So, leave it to me to try to throw weird shit in on a video about all the"typical" whiskeys. You've mentioned whiskeys that have smoked barley, but use mesquite or "the local fuel" do you have any examples in the vault?
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
Yes! several actually. Balcones has one, Colkegan from New Mexico uses Mesquite. Del Bac from Arizona does as well! I think others as well.

Do you guys promote your channel at all? why do you have so many videos (of great quality) but so little subscribers?
@FightStealDrink7 жыл бұрын
No promotion for this channel yet. Not even good titles / thumbnails / tagging, which would make a huge difference. I don't think it's a priority for the school (wizard academy) yet. BUT, with the engagement we're seeing from you guys - I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to give the channel some more love. On the flip side, the new distillery channel Daniel and I and launching will get lots of TLC from the get-go. In the meantime, share this channel with fellow whiskey nerds!

Another great episode and thanks for responding to my last comment! I'm definitely going to check out the Master of Malt Advent Calendar. Now I've never had a single malt scotch (newbie), and based on name recognition alone I told my wife to pick me up a bottle for my birthday this weekend. Based on your reactions in this video, should I change my request? Is there another single malt that would be a better entry into that world? Thanks again!
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
No, definitely start! It's smooth and friendly. Very easy entry
