Just tried some Grand Old Par this week. I like my smoky whiskies and have two bottles of Laphroig that stashed away just before it went up to $61 a fifth in my area. But I also like scotches that are not very smoky. I really enjoyed Grand Old Par and at $24 a fifth. It stands on it's own and is a standout bargain. Cheap enough to drink on the rock, good enough to drink neat. I will keep buying it. Can't think of anything in it's price range that competes, but I have an unopened bottle of Finlaggan that could give it a run for it's money. Finlaggan is reputed to be very smoky and a single malt too.

Daniel- I manage a small liquor store and I'm *super* into wine. We've gained a reputation as THE place to go if you want to get into wine or want to broaden your appreciation of it. The problem is that the "wine" part sometimes gets dropped in word-of-mouth endorsements and people come in for guidance on their whiskey journey. I finally got tired of saying "baaaaaaahahahahahaha! No... Yeah, I have no idea... I order most of my whiskeys based on Scotchnoob's suggestions (so I assume they're probably good), but I'd rather cut out my tongue than taste test them for you. Pick a cool label and hope for the best," so I started researching whiskey and landed on your YT page. Because you make whiskey seem so complex (instead of the single hellfire note I remember from my early 20's), I have decided to train myself to appreciate whiskey like I did with wine. Even if I never enjoy it, I hope that I can at least appreciate the nuances of the spirit enough to guide my customers. This is my third night of training and the only way I've been able to persevere is by listening to a video I found earlier tonight on repeat, while I train my taste buds and stomach to ignore the pain of ~80 proof liquor. It's a video of you. Singing "Fernando." I've listened to it about twenty times while drinking the same 150mL of [redacted to avoid judgement from Daniel] mixed with ~200mL [redacted to avoid judgement from literally everyone who drinks liquor]. So, yeah. Just wanted to say thanks for singing an Abba song very well, and thank you for making these Whiskey Vault videos. Even before I started this torturous journey, the information in your videos helped me educate a couple customers on differences between certain whiskeys. Keep it up! I'll try to update you on my progress once my senses stop rejecting the lessons I'm trying to teach them.
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
This is awesome! Glad you love the song :-) The journey into hard liquor is a serious one on your taste buds, and not a journey for the faint of heart. We talked about this in my office yesterday, so think if it like this. If a flavor profile was a quarter and you placed 1,000 of them on the floor in a living room, you have the variations of wine. Lots of variation and a reasonable opportunity to understand the vast difference between wine varietals. With whisky, take those same 1,000 quarters and stick them on a dining room table. While it's simple to tell the difference between one side of the table and the other, the overlap between is extremely high. Variations are subtle and quick. Takes a lot more drinking to build up the reasonable pattern recognition. make sense?

What's the no nonsense verdict on corks vs screw caps? Do you really need to polish off screw cap whiskies quicker? I really don't know how bad the seal is on a screw cap, and if I can get my whisky a little cheaper with a screw cap I don't really mind.
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
In my experience neither is perfect, they just have different ways of going wrong. Screw caps are on a few really tasty whiskies (especially Irish) and I've never had one be faulty. But I've had corks crumble pretty regularly. Which is why I keep corks when I throw away bottles.
@limejuice94837 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I did ask about that crumbly cork in my Bulleit. I didn't find my tea sieve, but a french coffee press did the job just fine!
@FightStealDrink7 жыл бұрын
I just like the feel of a cork better. Also good for stuffing into a tubesock for spontaneous melee action.

Could you guys do either Balvenie Doublewood 12 or Aberlour 12? Both are double cask matured, and are Speyside distilleries, and are still two of my favorites. Are these lighter-tasting whiskies more impacted by the second sherry cask, or are there other scotch regions that would benefit from a second barrel? What about non-scotch whiskies?
@Beeblebrox427 жыл бұрын
I 2nd the request. Local liquor store next month is having The Balvenie Malt Master David Stewart for an interactive tasting. Sample aged whiskies including The Balvenie Caribbean Cask, finished in rum casks, and DoubleWood, finished in exotic casks.
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
We should do an A/B on these. we've got both! I think the secondary aging/finishing is a growing trend across all whisky areas. I love it. It opens up all kinds of unique flavor possibilities.
