The Whistleblower Who Exposed Theranos | Amanpour and Company

Remember the name Theranos? It was touted as a revolutionary blood-testing start-up--until 2018, when it came crashing down and its founder, Elizabeth Holmes, was charged with fraud. Tyler Shultz worked at the company before becoming a whistleblower about the technology, which didn't actually work. In his new podcast, "Thicker Than Water," he tells his side of the story. Hari Sreenivasan talks to Schultz about that, and about lessons learned as it relates to the hunt for a COVID-19 vaccine.

I would say that this is more of a practical move for him. Think - he already knows that the technology is not working, yet the company was doing all it could to convince people on the board, as well as consumers, whose lives would be put at stake for trusting error results coming from a faulty equipment, and making fatal health decisions... this has the impact to blow up really catastrophically.. and he knew it since day 4 of his time there. It means it's bloody basic obvious. So when, not if, when truth come to light, everyone involved from testing to selling this tech, will be implicated big time. What future would he be left with if he got implicated, but did not sound out? He'd rather be a hero than carry this on him and his future, is my feel. But i need to commend him on his resourcefulness, and i feel really bad for him and his parents that they have to be put through the financial strain to fight this. Going up against a reputable cooperation with powerful political and legal backing, It could so easily have gone the other way..

​@@B_Bodziak There are multiple whistleblowers. The most important one was actually a former lab director who was called to testify in the trial. That lab director was also WSJ reporter's main source but he requested anonymity. Erica Cheung indeed was the one who called CMS which shut Theranos down. Tyler reported Theranos to NY state regulators that regilates PT testing. NY regulators didn't follow up. All three talked to WSJ. Tyler Schultz is important to the WSJ reporter because who his grandfather is. The lab director remained anonymous. WSJ bosses wouldn't run such an big investigating report soley based on an anonymous source. Erica Cheung was a low-level employee. With his grandfather's name and position in Theranos, the reporter had an easier time to convince higher-ups that the story was credible and verified. WSJ was risking a huge defamation suit if it got this wrong. I think that's why John Carryrue gave a lot of credit to Tyler Schultz. Plus, that family drama between grandfather and grandson was movie-worthy. Erica Cheung and Tyler Schultz are good friends. They work together on business ethics project. They don't fight over credit. They took down Theranos together. No need to feel sorry for Erica Cheung. From what I heard, she's doing well.

@@jckung3914 It was Erika's letter to CMS that actually prompted the investigation. Erika is also the one who approached Tyler and told him about the fraud. She literally made him aware of it. Erika has just remained much quieter about her role. Tyler ended up taking the front seat on revealing the fraud to the WSJ, and because of who his grandfather was AND the financial amounts his GF not only personally contributed, but also all of the other influential people the GF pulled in that added additional monies to Theranos, Tyler's involvement (whistleblowing) with the WSJ lent more credibility to the proposed article(s). I don't think Erika receives enough credit. Without her approaching Tyler and "spilling her guts" to him, who knows what might have (or may have not) happened to Theranos.

As someone who has a background in diagnostic technology I was most interested in what he had to say about the Theranos equipment itself which I hadn't heard before. It was nothing. Inside these little boxes was no new technology, actually not much technology at all, just a little robotic arm and an apparently rudimentary optical reader device. On a technical design level these people at Theranos were ignorant and backward aside from being financial frauds.

I read Bad Blood by the WSJ reporter mentioned, John Carreyrou. There is so much more to this story and the toxic culture of the company. This interview does it no justice. I think we all have been over conditioned to believe in the advances of technology being a panacea for humanity to solve our problems. Ruper Murdoch should also be applauded for allowing the story by John Carreyrou, which first exposed Holmes, to be printed by wall st journal which is owned by Murdoch. Murdoch invested 150m dollars in Theranos and Holmes asked Murdoch to kill the story but Murdoch to his credit allowed the story to go ahead.
