Sandra Laing: A Spiritual Journey (2000): Sandra Laing was born to white parents in South Africa, but because of her appearance she was identified as black and expelled from school. What followed was a heartbreaking story of a family ripped apart during Apartheid-era South Africa.
Subscribe to Journeyman here: www.youtube.com...
Sandra Laing was born in 1955 to two white Afrikaners. She had a happy early childhood, unaware of her difference. However once she started school, it became obvious that Sandra was no normal child; due to her dark skin, Sandra was believed to be black. At 10 years old, parents at her primary school petitioned for her expulsion, deeming it unacceptable for a young 'black' girl to be educated in a white school. Her case was referred to the Department of Home Affairs, and Sandra was officially identified as black, and expelled. After a 2-year-long petition process, Sandra was re-identified as white after a blood test proved she was her parents' child. It was too late however; her absence at school had caused her to fall behind, and her English to suffer. Unable to fit into a divided society, Sandra, aged just 15, ran away with a black man and started a family. She was jailed for two months for being in a mix-raced couple, during which her family refused to visit. Even once released, her father refused to speak to her and cut contact, with her mother eventually following suit. The years to follow would prove to be tough, her identity constantly questioned and her life ending up in pieces. 30 years later, now happy with a
new husband, Sandra has difficulty coming to terms with the past, feeling guilt and regret for her actions, and while she longs to visit her now dying mother, her white family still wants nothing to do with her. A heartbreaking and extraordinary story set in Apartheid South Africa, which was eventually turned into a film, Skin (2008), starring Sophie Okonedo.

If you look back at the history of South Africa, the Europeans mixed with the Koi koi and Koi san, which is what she and her siblings looks like. History shows that over generations a black couple (due to their ancestors interracial marriages) can have a light skinned child, as well a white couple can have a darker skinned child. I remember years ago on a talk show in the States, a black couple had a very fair skinned child with blond hair, the husband swore that his wife fooled around on him. After DNA tests and the husbands ancestry they found that the child was his as he had German ancestors. So, before you pass nasty judgement on this sad yet beautiful story, think about your ancestry. Life is too short for us to be judgmental and nasty.

It is not just the skin color, she has black features, and let’s not talk about the hair. What white German is goin to have that class 4 hair? Some people might buy this, but if you know anything about genetics you would know this is ridiculous. Her mom got knocked up by a black man, and came up with a story to try to cover it up. Yes, we know the story of Sandra well in SA🇿🇦. She's one of many and different circumstances and lives shattered. It just illustrates the absurdity of Apartheid which many family still suffer the repercussions of today. Black families split when their fairer, lighter skinned family members classified "coloured" and moved to mixed race locations, other black families split by tribal groups, people in mixed marriages jailed, some white sympathizers of anti-racism disowned by their families and jailed. Broken family ties with many still confused about their identity still and messed up. 🇿🇦

@@sophiawilson8696, no, it isn't "end of story", because it is almost impossible to happen. For that to occur both parents would have to have more than the usual 1-5% African ancestry that Afrikaners have AND for Sandra and her brother to defy the odds by taking huge chunks of the African DNA from both parents to look how they look, even when each parent has such remote African ancestry as to look totally White themselves. The obvious answer is that Sandra's mother had an affair with a Black man who fathered Sandra.

It's possible for her to be born apparently black even though she is born of apparently white people. You might actually find that both her parents have black genes in their family in that they each have an ancestral black person from whom they received the "black" gene. This gene might have been recessive meaning that it didn't show in the parents, however, because they are both carriers, their mating resulting in them having a black child. At least understand the basics of genetics before you can invalidate this woman's story. While there are stories of cheating parents resulting in the birth of a child of a different race, her story is not a lie... she is a white woman who has black features and is born of white parents. Her case is not absolutely impossible, but very rare... she is that 1 in so many people.

Think about it if she wasn't the dad's daughter there'd of been no way she'd of ever got reclassified as white. The government most likely would of loved her to be black to kick her and her brother out of those whites only schools. Shit I'm surprised they didn't rig the test after they saw the truth to make it say she had a black dad to fit their agenda.

or most likely - surrogate mother. no way back then in paternalistic south african apartheid would a white woman be tolerated to bed a black man.. however.. a white man who was very domineering, and controlling, could definitely get away with having a black lover... most likely he fathered sandra and her little brother (the other one apparently is very white and is prolly the real biological child of them) with his black lover, and his wife tolerated it, and actually DID love him a lot, so had no issue with raising the children as her own.. I just don't see any possible way of Sandra's mother having a consistent enough affair with a black dude to bear two children while married to a white dude. unless he had the biggest cuckold fetish of all-time and loved it lol.. I'd bet the former, though, that Sandra's MOTHER was actually a black woman.

Then what makes it even more unsettling is that her brothers wouldn't or won't even talk to her. Fucking pathetic! And don't even put it on her being with some man... he was old af talking to her and she did what any other teen was doing... being naive. And all her father saw was skin color. Forgetting what color his beautiful baby was and putting aside that some grown man was preying on his little girl. This whole thing... she didn't ask to be mistreated, shunned by near everyone but people who looked like her, etc. The brothers are by far... get it together. The mother is even more shocking to me... and still while going through all that Ms. Sandra still came out to be one of the greatest mothers despite of what she lacked. I watched the movie but actually watching this and seeing how hurt she is, I can't even. The mother in me feels that little girl in her still longing smfh.

He still had the same kinky curly hair but resembled the father so much so I would have to say Abraham finally had the proof he needed in his second son that Sandra was his. Yet no one batted an eyelash about him at all, not even the schools. Leon, I’ve read, came out white but not really. I think he probably had curly hair too as his nickname in school was “Jew”.

Agreed, and for people to continuously try to say that her parents were passing for white is ludicrous. It's possible that maybe one of them were passing but I'm 100% sure they both were not. Even still...there is no way that ALL of their children would have come out looking biracial. Hell, I'm only 7% white (according to my genetic testing) and this woman looks just as black, if not more, black than I do. I honestly believe that her mother had an ongoing affair with a black man and her parents were too ashamed to own up to it...they thought the kids would/could pass as long as they doubled down on both being the biological parents. People keep bringing up the "blood test" but it was just that, a BLOOD TEST, which proves absolutely nothing. DNA testing wasn't even available until the mid-late 80's... If that man were simply "passing" for white, he wouldn't have treated his daughter with such disregard. The son's were lighter and more than likely fell in line with pursuing/marrying white women, especially seeing how their sister was treated after falling in love with a black person. We are all mixed up and genetics show up in weird ways, but I'm sorry...I do not believe that these parents were simply passable for white and ALL of their children came out clearly as descendents of African people.

This story is not about this woman being mixed race. It is deeper than that. In the old footage of the parents in the shop, the mothers face was so distorted that there was some pain going on for a minute. Now the pain of the daughter is carried on. There is more to this story than what is being told in 25 minutes. There could be more of what actually took place in the home for this girl to run away from home at a VERY young age. So, she was not accepted in school yet ran away from family that loved her? Home with family that loves you is where you find solitude. This was such a happy home, but the mother is AFRAID of the father. There is something to this story. A grown woman shy to this day, and yet she married twice, starting at what age? There is something about this story. This story SCREAMS abuse.

I Agree By Now In Life Her Siblings should have figured out or Realized That their Sister was the daughter of All African proably REALLY Dark Skinned And They May have afraid of what their Dad would do or say to them or. Their Mom Or Maybe They Promised The Mom They Would Not bring her Around Yes Their Mom Cheated Or Their Parents One or Both had All African Blood and It Came Up through Her As It has In My Own Family And Yes D.N.A. test Proved My Brother is The Father But it Skipped Our Parents and Camed Through Our Great Great Parent's But The Sad Truth Is This Woman Has Experienced What Many of Us Or Our Family Members in The U.S. Yet If She didnt RUNAWAY She Would Have Lived A Miserable Life. Because Her legal Father Could Not Forgive His Wife Or Hated His Daughter Looked Black But Her Hair,Skin, Nose, And Build Clearly State All African Was In Somebodys D.N.A. But I Say This What Kind Of Mother Could Live With A Man Who Could Not Accept HER CHILDREN IF SHE HAD TO GO RUNAWAY WITH HER CHILDREN AND TELL HER CHILDREN IT IS WHAT IS BECAUSE THE WORLD IS GONNA BE CRUEL AND REJECT THEM HOW COULD THEY JUST SEND HER TO SCHOOL LIKE THAT AND SURELY THEY COULD TELL SHE WAS DARK AND WHAT ABOUT THE BROTHER HE IS DARKER HUMPH I KNO2 THEY WERE BUSINESS OWNERS BUT THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A LOSS WITH THE BUSINESS AND HUSBAND THE D*** WAS GOOD TO HER NOT ONCE BUT TWICE MY HEART GOES OUT TO HER EVEN WITH ALL SHE HAS GONE THROUGH HER LOVE FOR CHILDREN IS GREAT("A TRUE AFRICAN MOTHER")

DNA tests proved Sandra has both her parent's genes . What she has is a case of atavism, when genes from multiple generations past resurface in a new born child and remain permanently. Because everyone has black ancestry this accounted for her African features. It's rare, but happens not only in humans, for example growing tales of prehistoric creatures, but even in animals. You should look that up. It's interesting.

In a country where they used to decide your career, where you live and where you were allowed to hang out. The issue is so deeply ingrained, you would not understand. They are just put in a position to feel inferior. So it's a fight not to be seen to be as underdog, 'kaffir/swat' both derogatory terms for black people, in their own country. It's so deep that their own brands for hair relaxer, Ladine, get your hair so bone-straight it just floats in the wind, which I also used, I might add. Though less invasive hair straightening routines are available(intense hair-drying-expensive). Worse still there are bush-men(Khosan) and very light people who are indigenous to that region and not a mix. So complex, is the amount of damage done in that country, I have no idea where they will start to solve their issues

I had a friend that said her husband’s grandmother said there was black in the family. All of her kids were born with curly hair. Her daughter had a kinky patch in the center of her head. But none of them had dark skin. It’s truly hard to believe that she was born not only w/ darker skin, but also with the kinky hair. Speaking from the African-American side, we have all colors in our family. There are a lot of very light-skinned ppl in my family. It’s all genetics, someone in her family was black or biracial & passed for white. It happened all the time. I wish that ppl would be honest with their family. I’m so glad that she was welcomed in the black community & loved. ❤

People in these comments are so ignorant🤦‍♀️ she clearly resembles her father. I'm pretty sure someone in her blood line passed for white that happened a lot during segregation

Thats true. Same with me. My entire fam looks like typical African fam. But I was born with brown hair, very pale skin with freckles and light eyes and am seen as coloured/mixed because of my facial features. My daughter is half white because of her dad and has almost straight hair with blonde highlights and looks mostly white. Genetics are a mf
