Simon’s existential crisis every time he attempts to pronounce foreign words never fail to entertain and a part of me wants him to examine a case from my country Iceland just to see him have an aneurism. We rarely experience crimes such as murder and the two most high profile cases changed us as a nation - the Guðmundur and Geirfinnur case, an unsolved disappearance in the 70s which was rife with mishandling by our law enforcement, and the murder of Birna Brjánsdóttir in 2017 which devastated us as a nation (we were similar in age and i still remember how the entire country united in the search for her)

@@havenward yes he was a part of the case (though I have yet to watch out of thin air) but our police severly mismanaged this case and forced confession by torture (not the gory kind but severe sleep deprivation and long term isolation and a dash of that good ol’ gaslighting) so I would be really interested to hear Simon’s and the writer’s take on the case

39:40 Simon's talking about Alex Honnold's "Free Solo". It's a great watch and despite Simon's take on it, the movie goes into detail about Alex's mental state more than just that visit to the doctor. From my understanding, Alex has been climbing since he was a youngling... so he's been doing it for 30 years or so. Not only has he been doing it for a long time, he's done increasingly more difficult climbs throughout the years. His golden rule is if he doesn't have the confidence, or he's just "not feeling it" he'll call off a climb. In the case of El Cap, he practiced and practiced and practiced it over and over with gear and built up his confidence to attempt it without safety pre-cautions. He had every move he had to make written down and studied it for years to build up his confidence. He even went over the entire route, literally inch by inch, cleaning and removing any debris, soil, & plants so he could minimize accidents. He had actually aborted attempt the day before on account of it not feeling quite right. His fear is inversely proportional to his experience, the amount of preparation and the practice he puts in - there's little left to fear when the only feeling you have is "I know I've got this in the bag". It's a misconception to think that he doesn't feel fear like it's a "superpower" - it's just that he has tempered himself, learning to minimize it and/or to let the fear pass. It's not much different than people who can handle horror movies, gore, swearing, or dark humour (to name a few examples)... some people just get a stomach for it after a while and it doesn't bother them. I would hazard a guess that Alex Honnold would have roughly the same amount of fear jumping out of a plane that any other person would have because he would be so out of his comfort zone of rocks under his feet.

I have a suggestion for a Casual Criminalist or Decoding The Unknown episode: the unsolved crimes of the Nivelles Gang (Bende Van Nijvel) in Belgium between 1982 and 1985. The perpetrators committed a series of holdups of Delhaize supermarkets and killed 28 people and wounded 40. Like in the White Uno Gang case, suspicion also fell onto the military and what in those days was called something like the National Guard (they don't exist any more). They are also associated with Gladio, I think. Check it out. Damn. You came up with it yourself at the end of the eposode. :-) But it could still be worth it.

"Man, I had this really awesome career opportunity but I had to turn it down to work at Kroger". That's the most insane shit I've ever heard. Why do you think it would be good or right to force people by law to spend an entire year of their life doing something very unlikely to further their career prospects in any meaningful way compared to other opportunities they might have?

@@ethanbaranitsky61 you lost the plot. To get your degree as a doctor, you have to do a residency. So you can think of it like that. But in other countries, you have to serve in the military. It is required for a certain number of years. It isn't turning down a job. It is a required length of time you need to serve. But instead of being sent through basic training and being handed a gun, you just have to bag groceries. It just shows the privilege of the US.

About Free Solo, Alex Honnold definitely can feel fear it's just he tolerates it. Imagine walking up a tall staircase, you know you're getting high but you're not afraid of falling because you know you can execute the climb. Now replace the stairs with vertical ladders, after that thought experiment scale it up step by step (pun intended). Honnold is at his own league in terms of scaling this but in his mind he's not taking much risks. Climbing dangerous things is not about adrenal rush at all, it's about doing something you know perfectly well you can do and the risk of falling just adds an extra level of focus and commitment.

On the topic of doing extreme things for adrenaline, a lot of us ADHD folks are like that. Some of us are just understimulated at all times and we end up doing incredibly dangerous things without even considering the risk. As a child, I convinced my brother to try and steal a forklift truck and I rode on the front of it while he drove it... straight into a wall. I somehow came out unscathed there, but most of my ridiculous childhood escapades did not end like that considering the dyspraxia. There's some twisted luck in my nerve problems not allowing me to do stupid stuff as an adult, like climbing on top of Lidl and promptly falling off.

I don't know which of Simon's tangents prompted this, but had to share that I'm currently watching the miniseries "Unbelievable" based on a true-crime serial rapist that was active in the U.S. Pacific Northwest in the early 2000s-2010s. The saddest/most frustrating part about it is how the detectives 'investigating' the original incident essentially interrogated the victim to the point of forcing her to recant her statement [of being raped.] It's tough to watch, and I totally get Simon's frustration with investigative incompetence/apathy. Simon, I appreciate your empathy, and your impressively long narrations. Casual Criminalist Team, keep the fascinating content coming.
