Phew! After all those years, they can still kick. Daltrey's voice so strong, and choosing Zack on drums, inspirational. I have followed them since '65 and they have gone from strength to strength. Carry on, boys!

Their new drummer is Zak Starkey, aka Zak Starr aka Ringo's son. Both Pete and Daltry say he's the best since Kieth Moon who actually taught Zak when he was a kid.

The best thing about these studio appearances is the chance to hear all the little nuances that you'd probably miss at a balls-out concert. Two things I picked up that I really liked: Rabbit's little keyboard motif at 4:12 Zak's playing against Rog's harmonica at 4:53

@delbut2 I don't see anything fishy at 2:04. Matter of fact, at 4:12 you can see and hear him miss a note. You really have to hand it to the production crew of the Jools Holland Show. They really do an incredible job with sound and lighting to make all these performers as perfect as can possibly be. He's a great host too. I wish we had something like it in America. Great production, great variety, and a great host with a history in music.

@lawrence096 When you say "strum" from 2:04 you mean windmill, yeah?? Coz that is what he does from 2:04 and sometimes, the windmill is simply a visual thing and somethimes a physical thing. He will windmill hos arms 3/4 times in a row but only mean to hit the strings 1/2 times. It is meant and you are FORGIVEN!

Now this might get me slagged to hell and back, but though I think Pino Palladino is a great bass player, he seems to cause The Who to lose tempo here. It's not Zak Starkey's fault because I've seen them when John was still alive and Zak was on drums and they didn't seem so leaden. I know that they're getting on, but they have never made concessions for their age, ever! As a confirmed Keith Moon admirer, I have to say that Zak Starkey does a great job. He's not Keith, but nobody ever will be

@delbut2
@delbut2 14 жыл бұрын
@andie361 I have seen videos and heard him speak live on the fact that if someone says to him before he goes on stage: " enjoy it" or "have fun" he will tell them to fuck off, because it is not an enjoyable thing for him. He does not like touring and seldom "enjoys" live work. I will dig out the vid where he says this and come back with a link to it.

Geez, seriously yes, it was a time for music, a lot of innocence and talent going on. Considering so much of what the world calls influential music was done on a three track, live in the studio, there were plenty of really good bands that could play. Tell your bassist to listen to Duck Dunn from Booker T, serious groove happening, Entwhistle for all the crash boom bang. Yeah, tell him to get stuffed...

Actually sounds really good considering John and Keith are not playing! Always rated Zak Starkey on drums and Pino was never going to re-create the sound that The Ox put on this record so fair play to him for putting his own spin on it!

Doubt it. There is nothing Pino can't play. The ultimate session player, he defined a genre with his fretless playing on Paul Young's "Wherever I Lay My Hat", and is still the only guy to play with 3 different bands on the same live episode of TOTP. My brother, who was in Pino's school year in Cardiff and is himself a grade 8 Bass teacher lays down at his feet. More likely poor monitor mix, lack of rehearsal, the usual band blues.

Christ, i wish Pino would turn his treble and his bass up. They should of got a bassist who Enwistle was they're hero, now the who sound souless with out entiwistle on these sort of songs.

It is difficult to watch this video and contrast it to the band performing this song in their heyday. This is a fine performance, but it is full of loss. John and Pete are no longer with us. Pete is a shadow of himself. Roger sounds fine, but he, too, isn't what he once was. Seek out the version of this song with 8 million hits and you will see what I mean.
