I was in high school in San Diego, around 1974 or so, my friends and I wanted to drive to Phoenix, Az. to see them in concert. Of course our parents said no way. So we said we were going camping, as we did a lot back then. We had a 5 or 6 car caravan going to the concert. All I remember is parking there and then waking up in the car with the others. Ah, great times...

In 1976, I moved from a city to a rural Australian campus - and as luck would have it - to the premier on-campus party dorm (think "Animal House", with more civilised attitudes to women). This song was a wonderful, liberating anthem to a life beyond the suburbs, to beyond the prevailing political climate of the time. It was a wonderful call-to-arms song, whether played at a dorm party or else within the comforting arms of a beloved partner. I love this song more and more as the years pass, not only for the fond memories, but for the consummate energy and conquer-the-horizons narrative.

My dad raised me on this good stuff. Whenever I listen to The Who or any classic rock it puts me in a great mood and reminds me when I was little. Last year, my color guard team took a road trip to a city 2 hours away and this jam came on while I was taking a nap and I immediately woke up and shut my eyes again and was tapping my feet the whole time.

"Let's get together before we get much older." There's a lot of truth to that line. I've seen it with my parents who are too old now to get together with family and friends because of health and mobility issues or all their family and friends from their generation are gone now. Don't keep putting it off. Life won't wait around for you.

I interpret the lyrics by Pete Townshend to really mean (he was using code because homosexuality wasn't really excepted in his early career) 'out here in the fields (streets or London), I fight for my meals (blow jobs on guys) I get back to my living (rentboy) I don't need to fight, to prove I'm right, I don't need to be forgiven...He's basically saying that he doesn't need to justify his lifestyle to anybody.

My 18th birthday was on the last day of Woodstock, I am so blessed to have lived during the greatest time of music since Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, etc. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way - in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only. (Charles Dickens, "A Tale of Two Cities"). Rock and Roll!

Why is it that when I listen to this song I get a warn and fuzzy feeling. a feeling of consolation and satisfaction knowing that we created something, my generation (so to speak ;). we created some of the greatest music that ever was, and that will stand the test of time, and that I don't think will ever be beaten. It was a wonderful time to be alive, possibly the high point of humanity. the human race is lost now as we submit our freedom to enslavement and dehumanisation through technology. but we had a good run in the 60s 70s 80s and 90s. . . and I was a part of it, and if you are 40 or 50 or over, you were too, and you know what I'm talking about. peace out to the children of the 60s 70s 80s and 90s.

*record scratch* *freeze frame* *this song starts playing* "See that guy? Yeah. That's me. Charming, I know. You're probably wondering how I ended up here. To tell you that, we're gonna have to go back. WAY back." *Shows baby main character* "Woah, tiger! Not that far back!" *Fast fowards to a school bus emptying* "Thereeee we go! It was the first day of a school, and I only had one thing on my mind: Stacey O"Donell. See, I didn't know it then, but my life was about to be turned upside down." *music fades out* *scene actually begins*

I had an FM converter in the dash of my 68 GTO, and that's where I first heard this tune. I had put the converter in because AM radio sucked and played the Osmonds and shit. This song was like ripples on the surface of a pond with a stone tossed in.

Apparently the Who looked over the crowd at the end of the Isle Of Wight festival in 1970 and said it's a teenage wasteland.
@tonfiselier18185 жыл бұрын
Woodstock actually: "Townshend stated in an interview that the song is about "the absolute desolation of teenagers at Woodstock, where audience members were strung out on acid and 20 people had brain damage. The irony was that some listeners took the song to be a teenage celebration: 'Teenage Wasteland, yes! We're all wasted!'"".

@Mangorine245 жыл бұрын
@Pedro DLR Instead of complaining about how the younger generation aquired their taste of music, maybe you should be happy that so many younger people can still enjoy music that their parents and the older generation liked. Everyone knows a song from somewhere, it doesnt matter if its from a movie, a video game or from an old LP you find in the basement, it doesnt make their taste somehow invalid. What matters is how they listen to a song and how they keep it famous...
@slingxslayer79485 жыл бұрын
Pedro DLR Calm down my friend! Don’t bash on the younger generation for how they got their taste in music. It’s wonderful that our world is so connected that we can listen to whatever music we want to. I’m part of the younger generation too and I found this song through my dad but so what if others find this song differently. Discovering music is always a positive thing my friend. You have a lot to learn coming from a 16 year old.

there's a difference between a passing interest in pop culture and actual interest in music. that's why music sucks today. it's not insulting the people who make it, it's insulting the idiots who fail to recognise talent and just want simplistic shit to prevent them from thinking. the majority of people hear something popular and flock to it. this isn't popular because of culture. it's popular because it's amazingly crafted. being put in a tv show just proves that music today isn't worth using.
