Starting during a Who tour in 2007, The Who started performing a live version of "My Generation" which then morphs into "Cry If You Want". It's great because when performed live, Pete goes to town on a guitar solo at the end of the song. Ironically, The Who performed in the UK last night and once again they played the "My Generation/Cry If You Want" combo. I wasn't there but I heard it was a great performance.

The most recent studio album by The Who was released in 2019 and is simply called "WHO". My favorite song on that album is "Beads On One String". It's got a great synth loop throughout the entire song and Roger's voice is incredible on it. And you get to hear the classic Townshend backing vocals. I got to see The Who at Fenway Park in Boston in September 2019 and they performed "Beads On One String" that night.

A lot of people say The Who were done after the death of Keith Moon, but personally I think this album is maybe better than the few that came before it. Other than "Eminence Front", which is easily the best known song of this album, I remember "Athena", "I've Known No War" and "Cry If You Want" as being standout tracks and getting decent radio play back in the day. Around this time Pete Townshend was starting to become just as well known for his solo albums -- especially Empty Glass, which has "Let My Love Open the Door" and "Rough Boys" on it. It's almost like Keith's death and other troubles at that time lit something under Pete, inspiring him to write some songs that were quite different than earlier Who songs but with a powerful energy that could only have come from him.

There's a couple of other great songs from the IT'S HARD album. Namely, "I've Known No War" and "Eminence Front". The album The Who released in 1975, THE WHO BY NUMBERS is another one with checking out. It's stripped back compared to It's immediate predecessor QUADROPHENIA, but is a hugely underrated album from this great, great band.

For all those years when they didnt release any more music, i always viewed that guitar outro of the final song on the final album as a furious raging against the dying of the light.

Great selection! Love this song. That guitar at the end is just fantastic. The two 80’s albums (without Keith) are derided by some fans but I love them both. So many great songs on them. Grateful you’re giving lots of attention to The Who. Always enjoy your reactions and analysis.

This 1982 album spelled the end of The Who. For me, it's a good LP but a lot of fans dropped out after Keith Moon's death in 1978. The Who will never be the Who again. "Eminence front" is probably one of the best songs on the album with Pete Townshend on vocals. The song "Cry if you want" will be played regularly on stage. This song forcefully addresses the old certainties of an arrogant youth by casting doubt on them. The album went gold in the US and Canada.

Does any singer sound better pissed off than Daltrey? Interesting martial drums with the snare since Moon didn't even use them usually. Townsend's angry guitar at the end matches Daltrey's vocals in anger.

Coming up with quality new material is not easy after nearly 30 years as a band. Pete still had some magic left.
