I still believe that if they'd released "Cry If You Want" as the single off of the last album rather than "Athena" the album would have had a much better reception. "Cry If You Want" is a Who song, sitting comfortably next to anything next to Who's Next or Quadrophenia. "Athena" is a song you'd find on a Townshend solo album that didn't fit The Who's audience, then or now.

Too bad you weren't there to argue this to Pete back in 82.

I saw them do Cry in 1982 and again in Leeds on the 50th anniversary tour. I like much more than Eminence Front.

Interesting observation Charles, never thought of it in those terms but I would have to agree w you. Athena just seemed misplaced in the Who context.

They did the full version of this song at Live At Leeds 2, and it was the highlight of the show IMO. They continued to mix in the CIYW rap into the middle of MG throughout the 2006/07 tour, but only did the full version at a couple of shows. The Wholigans' version is quite amazing, shame they don't do it any longer.

That's the best song off the album imo. I'm in a Who tribute band and we did CIYW and It's Hard & Dangerous & Athena from that album. In 82-86ish when we played 'Cry If you want ' the audience never really quite 'got it' which was a shame as we really liked it. You can see our version on our yotube channel.

I cannot imagine "You Better You Bet", "Eminence Front", "The Quiet One"; "Another Tricky Day"; "Athena"; "Its Hard"; "A Man Is A Man"; and perhap the most underrated song in The Who history: "Cry If You Want" WITHOUT Kenny Jones!

I saw them play this in 2006 & Zak played it different which I initially preferred but when I went back to the original I realised it was brilliant the way it was. It made me revisit the It's Hard album and discover I actually love the album.

Yeah it's a shame a lot of these "82" shows post production remix of the sound drowns out Petes guitar, the bass dominates. Anybody who saw live on the "82" tour knows that Townsend's power chords just rocked the stadiums out, he played fantastic.
@davidkieltyka98 жыл бұрын
Yep, horrible mix here. IMO one of Pete's finest '82 moments too. At least the remastered It's Hard album does a much better job with the same performance (bonus track). I recorded this show live off the radio and watched it too on cable. 1st On Demand broadcast I remember seeing. I no longer have the recording but I remember the guitar being louder in the mix than it is here. Saw the band at the Pontiac Silverdome too (as well as in '75). Terrible acoustics both times. At the '82 show I remember Pete shaking his head and saying after the first few songs, "This place was never meant for music." :) Fortunately I also saw 'em at the Masonic Temple in Detroit in '79. Small venue, great sound and performance!

There's a touch more clarity at the Orlando show, but yes, him adding those Mesa cabinets and whatever speakers were in them (Altecs?) took his sound to a much deeper, broader spectrum. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIernYGuqNp1pas

20 years ago I bought the remastered edition of It’s Hard and this song sounds a whole lot better. Plus I remember when I first played The Who Rocks America VHS on a mono player Pete’s guitar was faded out. But when I got a stereo, VCR hooked up to my receiver, then that concert sounded so much better.
@johndannenbrink75902 жыл бұрын
Though Pete’s guitar at the end gets lost in the mix let’s give a massive “hip, hip, hooray!” for finally getting John NOT marginalized in live Who videos which is a perennial torture for any true Who fan who waits in vain to see The Ox on stage only to be disappointed by a split second here or there through the ages. Criminal stupidity. John cold as ice in the corner is key to the Whocano’s unrivaled live devastation.

Entwistle`s estate sold a master copy of the audio from this show. It was recorded from Entwistles separate mixing board. `wonder if that might explain the audio imbalance.
@speedbird4912 жыл бұрын
I agree that Naked Eye and CIYW were right on that night. But your dead on that Drowned and The Quiet One were the best performances of the evening. I though Pete and John did a blistering rendition of the Quiet One, and Pete tore Drowned apart in typical Townshend fashion. I have those two songs on disc because I enjoy them so much. Good ear girl.

I really liked this song and Eminence Front back in the day, happy they are still doing it. I was bummed when they broke up and slowly they faded away, to be replaced with real life I guess (chasing skirts). Great music for the sex starved teenage man/boy back then though!

@clashwho No, I listened to this live on the radio at the time. For some reason, Pete's Telecaster really was mixed that faint and tinny. All I could hear were the other three. Pete should have brought back the Les Pauls for this tour and cranked 'em up to 11.
