God, what an incredibly fantastic powerhouse song!! First time hearing this, I was a Soph. in h.s. in Hempstead, NY, sick in bed with the old bakelite Regal radio on beside me..This song came on, I just flipped out!! This was their first American hit. Later I found out, also by just the jangly, clangy sound of Townshend's guitar, that it was a Rickenbacker electr. 12-string, prob. this Rose, Morris 1993 DeLuxe model..Just flipped me for a loop!! Had the pleasure of covering this, both playing rhythm on a ES335, and on my Rick 360/12 12-string while covering this and "The Kids Are All Right"!! Great memories of when I was playing professionally in Tucson Arizona!!

Actually, that's Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin fame. He was a "hired gun" on TONS of recordings done in Great Britain and Producer Shel Talmy brought him in to do the electric (Rickenbacker) 12-string. See my comment elsewhere for this video.

A MONSTER tune! I have listened to this for decades and it never gets old. For you guitar players especially: The Rickenbacker Electric 12-String is played by Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin fame using flatwound strings in standard 12-String tuning EXCEPT that the "G" strings are tuned to a regularly pitched "G" and not in octaves. My Rick 12 wouldn't sound right when trying to play the tune with the usual set-up of tuning and strings. But I figured it out. This stereo mix is my fave. Just 12-string electric guitar, bass and drums with the Ivy League doing the clapping and backing vocals. Moon's funky backbeat hi hat licks and the ride and crash cymbals are now heard whereas they were pretty much mixed out in every other mix I have heard.
