Summer day? Pete Townshend wrote this song when he was at one of his lowest points. The drink had him at this point and he was out of control. That first line 'I woke up in a Soho doorway, a policeman took my name' actually happened. He passed out, drunk, on his way home, in a shop doorway. A policeman found him and woke him up. When he discovered it was Townshend the cop was in tears. He told Pete that he was his hero and it upset him greatly to see him in that state. It was apparently the wake up call that Townshend needed to move towards sobriety. Took him a while but that was the first step.

Guitarist/songwriter Pete Townshend once said The Who had a lead vocalist, a lead guitarist, a lead bassist, and a lead drummer. Amazing on stage. The song's actually about Pete getting so drunk one night thata policeman found him collapsed in a doorway. I think you've already reacted to "Won't Get Fooled Again", so I'd suggest either a quieter track like "Behind Blue Eyes" or an early 60s hit like "Substitute" or "I Can See For Miles".

Welcome to The Who and it's a very deep rabbit hole to go down but very worth it. Their catalog is amazing. They're legendary. As a side note, I'm old enough and had the good fortune to see them live several times back in the day and they were always killer in concert. They were so talented and so good. True musicians/artists. You won't be disappointed diving deeper.

You can thank Keith moon for the start of brumm fills in rock music. He was and still is one of the best drummers out there, and not only that but there was a story about Townsend seeing a store that sold amps next to where he was loading there equipment for a concert, so he went in and asked the owner a Mr. Marshall if they could make a Amp that had a separate base Amp attached to the regular Amp and could they also make a Amp that had two or more stacked together and was warmer than the regular Amp. That is how Marshall amps became used in all folk concerts. They were larger and louder than anything that came before them. So thank you Peter Townsend.

There is a video of The Who doing A Quick One While He's Away. It's cut from The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus Movie and it is sheer brilliance...The Who in their prime. You must watch that video. Keith Moon is stunning. Actually, the whole performance was so stunning that the Stones shelved the movie for years because they were so embarrassed at how The Who upstaged them. It was only released in the last 10 years or so and was filmed in 1968 (just before the Who changed music forever with the release of Tommy).

Every member of The Who played "lead" on their particular instrument. That shouldn't work, but they harnessed the chaos. They've been around since the British Invasion in the 1960s so you've got a deep hole to climb into. Most definitely the best live band ever! If you go back to their Mod days, there's I Can't Explain and My Generation. I Can See For Miles is a stupendous song. Then they played Woodstock and made the Rock Opera - Tommy (brilliant LP). They mature over time with their musical sophistication as any band should...

This is one of the first 2 songs to drop an uncensored "F bomb" on radio. This song came out when I was a kid, and they never censored the, "Who the fuck are you?" lyric. In the studio version of the song (this version isn't), it wasn't crystal clear what he was saying. The other song was "Do Ya Wanna Touch Me?" by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. If you listen closely near the end of the song, Joan yells in the background, "Fuck you! Fuck me! Fuck yeah! Do you want me? Yeah!". So, she dropped 3 F bombs on the radio, and the DJs didn't hear it, and didn't censor it. There's some useless music trivia for you. *Edit* Now that I think about it, there was one more uncensored F bomb released in between these! It was "I'm Losing You" by John Lennon from his final album "Double Fantasy" (which I call Half Fantasy, Half Nightmare). In the last verse of the song, John sings, "Do you still have to carry that cross?", then blurts out "FUCK!". It's not clear that's what he said, so it slipped past radio censors.
