I think he was referring to the awesomeness of Entwistle. Townsend may have been the musical genius, it was Entwistle that held the line in the Who. Cannot say enough about John's playing abilities. Thankful to have experienced the Who. Not to mention this song is still relevant today with everything going on around the world. Crazy.

I’d definitely say their very peak was 1974. Quadrophenia is a fucking insane display of power and skill. Who’s Next is definitely right behind that. Shit, By Numbers and Who Are You are solid 7.5-8.5 albums, through Keith’s decline definitely hurt WAY. Some of Townshend’s best material, could’ve been as good as Who’s Next. Everything after Keith’s passing in 78’ is hit or miss.

I was carving a pole in Toronto in a park. A big sculpture. The Who played Exhibition Park a mile or two down from us. Our park was taken over by the pre-concert party, Mods and Rockers up to the armpits. We couldn't get tickets, but we heard the show just fine down the lake front. Next morning, one of our homeless friends collected $60 in beer empties from our park. Sixty Bucks! Thats a lot of beer empties. Stubbies, every one. This song is a good example of a 60's musician adapting to new technology, ie: the ARP synthesizer.

Not bad, I suppose, apart from Daltrey's miming at 3:06! But I loved this from the first time I heard it, so much so that I eventually had an appraisal published in the Tamworth Herald, no less. (Another in my series... hope you're reading them all! Be warned - there's a controversial bit, regarding the full-length version, in this one):- I remember once, when walking past a jukebox, being almost literally hurled across the room by the opening blast from 'Won't Get Fooled Again'. This edited version issued as a single in 1971 represents a fine example of the pre-digital sound editor’s art - you just can’t hear the joins. The full version on the album ‘Who’s Next’, although breathtaking when played live, goes on and on and on, with a Pete Townshend synthesiser solo which in places sounds embarrassingly like a child playing with a toy. The uncompromising cynicism of the lyrics needs powerful delivery, something The Who were rather good at. Townshend makes his guitar bellow rather than talk; Keith Moon as usual sounds like he destroyed several kits during the session; and John Entwistle’s extraordinary BA-BA-BA-BA-BOOMS on the bass are a highlight of this fine musician’s contribution to a great band. Roger Daltrey’s vocals show a singer approaching the peak of his powers. It’s a performance of total conviction - spitting out the words, sounding mocking, contemptuous and triumphant in turn. The lyrics reach a fitting climax with the famous line, “Meet the new boss… same as the old boss.” The song offers no constructive answers, but as an anthem of rage it’s seldom been bettered. The Who provoked controversy throughout their long career, with hotel-wrecking, drugs and dubious subject matter for songs. The debate as to whether they should have called it a day after Moon’s death continues. But the enormity of their contribution to our musical heritage is undisputed, and they didn’t put out much better than the single version of ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’.
