Because Entwistle is usually playing solo bass. Pete is the rhythmic one.

Yeah and Keith just watched Pete and played too the guitar instead of the bass but this is what made them a great band 4 leads in one band, the best live rock band I have ever seen, saw them twice once in 76 and sadly without Keith in 81

John Entwistle and Chris Squire often fought for the title of the best bass player. John won out, being voted bassist of the millennium. I cherish them both but John will always be the best, to me. A true pioneer of his instrument.

This was over 50-plus years ago - rock & roll performances like this don't exist anymore. Pete Townshend co-founder, leader, and guitarist for The Who, started the arm-swinging power chord moves; Keith Moon is a drumming Icon, John Entwistle a Rock Bass innovator; and Daltrey Singing - they all played Lead. Amazing band. Legends.

The Who was a curious blend of pop / glam / metal / punk. Before those terms were being used! They were known for the improv performances.

Legend has it that Keith Moon lived next door to Steve McQueen in Malibu. Keith liked to practice into the wee hours and and Steve McQueen couldn't sleep, banged on Keith's door and almost beat the snot out of him. 😅

Drummer and Bassist almost became Lead Zeppelin and came up with the name. Entwistle said (I think in regard to leaving The Who) that it would go down like a Lead Balloon and Moon developed that to Lead Zeppelin.

Very cool. You are one of the few young metal guys actually going back to something that pre-dates Black Sabbath or Deep Purple. That drummer is Keith Moon, the anti-christ to every jazz drummer back then. Bill Bruford of Yes had "I Hate Moon" written across his sneakers. Unfortunately for Bill, The Who were a major influence on Peter Banks and Chris Squire! The thing about The Who is they were essentially led by the drummer, with guitar player Pete Townshend playing off of him. It was John Entwistle, the bass player, who was the actual time keeper. If Moon and Townsend went a bit off the rails they'd use Entwistle to get back on track. Great f*cking band, and a bit under-appreciated these days IMO.

The Ox, or John Entwistle, the bassist simply stood and played providing the foundation and sound harmonics that Moon and especially Townshend powered off of. Pete was especially on this day rifting on top of incredible bass lines. Daltrey, Moon always the frenetic drummer performer and Townshend then went off! Such energy! Such power! They were a foundational rock band for so much that came later, whether it be metal, punk or grunge.

I don’t know if Pete Townsend was the first to do the wind mill guitar strum, but he did make it a trade mark of his playing..... as well as smashing up his guitar. Keith Moon on drums also made a personal trade mark of destroying his drum kit and hotel rooms....... keeping the band poor despite their professional success. lol
