Great reaction to this great film, Jen. Sad about Matthew's passing though, there are two other films which he was really good in, 'Fools Rush In' and 'Three to Tango'. The follow up film 'The Whole Ten Yards' has many of the same cast, it's fun but not as good as this.

Some interesting trivia - the term 'The Whole 9-yards' originated from the sailing ships of the 15th through 19th century, that helped discovered other Continents such as North America. The length of the huge chain that held the ship anchors happened to be 27 feet by default, which is 9-yards. That was the modified in the later Centuries for some of the deeper Military ports, but most merchant ships kept that length throughout that time period. When one of those ships had to anchor in a deep port, or further out due to coral, the crew chief in charge of anchoring the vessel would inform the ships Captain that they had to use 'The Whole 9-yards', which stuck for many non Naval situations after that.

The sequel isn't that great, but you should check out "Grosse Point Blank." Another dark comedy with similar themes, similar awkward humor, and also a great soundtrack. These movies were heavily inspired by "Pulp Fiction" which launched a whole genre of crime action/comedies in the late 90's and early 2000's. Another good one is "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" which is a British film and the movie that really launched Jason Statham's career..

Matthew Perry portrayed my favourite character on my favourite sitcom of all-time. Friends ran through nearly my entire 20's, so I'm right in the demo. But beyond Chandler Bing, he did some really great movies (this one being arguably the best), and some other truly excellent TV work (Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip is the "one-season wonder" cancellation I am second-most bitter about, just behind Firefly). I will never not miss him. 😢 Thanks for this Jen, you're a Real One. 👍❤

'The whole nine yards' is a reference to the length of a belt of .50 caliber ammunition loaded into the guns of WWII fighter planes. And when over eager or untried pilots used up that ammo quickly it became the saying 'Gave, or give them the whole nine yards." Like all idioms they evolve over time, so today the saying can be used to describe being to over eager and unexperienced as well as giving all you got even in a no-win situation. The sequel to this film is worth the viewing too.

I knew you'd love this even without knowing how much you loved Friends. Fantastic mix of action, comedy and intrigue. Edit: If you want to see more of this cast the sequel is worth watching, but also a few other suggestions, Amanda Peet is great in a very quirky comedy from around this time called Saving Silverman. Natasha Henstridge might still be best known for her movie debut Species a cheesy fun 90's action/thriller movie with a loaded cast. And lastly Amanda Peet and Matthew Perry worked together on an Aaron Sorkin show called Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Honestly the show is probably not worth watching in it's entirety, however it has one of the great pilot episodes of all time and that IS worth watching. I'm sure that it would not be a view magnet for youtube but definitely worth an hour of your time off-camera or on patreon.

I just listened to Matthew Perry's audiobook and 1) He recalls biting into peanut butter toast and all his teeth coming out, forcing him to get back on the drugs he's been avoiding. 2) He says The Whole Ten Yards is utterly horrible. I haven't watched it. But I'll take his word on it. I don't know why this isn't more well-known. It was back in the day. But then again, there are A LOT of movies that are famous that have extremely few reactions (like The Graduate and Fast Times at Ridgemont High).

Love this movie so much! Lovely tribute to him; thanks Jen! :) Doing this movie together is what led to Bruce Willis guest starring on Friends. Bruce didn't think the movie would fare well at the box office; Matthew bet him it would. Bruce lost, and so had to appear on the show, which he did for free (or, you know, at scale, which is free for a big star like him) since his appearance was due to a bet. I think he gave his scale pay to charity, if I remember the story correctly, so he wouldn't profit off a bet he lost. Everyone loved him on the set of Friends so much, he ended up doing several episodes for his guest spot. :) Well, aside from the sequel The Whole Ten Yards, Amanda Peet's been in several movies, but most of the ones I've seen I didn't find too memorable. I did love Something's Gotta Give, which she's in (along with Jack Nicholson, Diane Keaton, and Keanu Reeves). Highly recommend this comedy, along with the sequel, if you want more Amanda. :)

By the way Miss Jen, Kevin Pollack (the guy you also saw in Usual Suspects) does an awesome impression of Shatner's Captain Kirk! :)

Amanda Peet is awesome and if you haven't seen it, I bet you'd like Saving Silverman with her. Solid 7/10 comedy but filled with those early 2000s casual comedy vibes like this one.

Rosanna Arquette here in this movie, she is the inspiration for the song Rosanna by Toto! Amanda Peete is also in Saving Silverman with Jack Black

That was funny! :D Jen never said, oh hey she was in Pulp Fiction, so I don't think she recognized Rosanna Arquette as the drug dealer's girlfriend in that movie. I think all anyone remembers from that scene is the huge needle going into Uma's chest, anyway. LOL X)

@ 24:46 that tune with the bari sax is called "Moanin' Mambo" by the Mingus Big Band. I especially like the live version with Ronnie Cuber playing the bari solo. He was a beast.

Matthew Perry will be sorely miss. His comedic timing was always perfect and thankfully he left us with many hours of hilarious entertainment that I'm sure will even outlasts our lifetimes. Bruce Willis too I still pray for his well-being and hope for his health and happiness during his difficult time. As with Michael Clarke Duncan who also left us too soon 😢 another magnificent actor who left such an indelible mark in this world. Bless them all. Now for Amanda Peet. A movie that she's in that I thought was pretty funny is another little odd comedy called "SAVING SILVERMAN " which also stars Jack Black, Jason Biggs, Steve Zahn and Neil Diamond. I thought she was hilarious as the crazy over the top fiance to the main character Silverman. IMHO. Well take care Jen 😊
