Why does Jake get to call what pitch? The catcher is the on-field general of the team; the quarterback, so to speak. He's the only player facing the rest of the team, and who everyone else can see all at the same time, so he can direct fielders to whatever positions they should be in (shifted in, out, left, right) considering the batter, the score, runners on base, and what inning it is. He studies all the opponent's batters so he knows which pitch is best to call in any situation. He's the smart one.

The catcher needs to know what the pitcher is going to throw so he can be ready to catch it. The pitcher can't easily signal his intended pitch to the catcher because he's facing the batter. 6:03 If a ball is hit outside the parameters of the outfield (but within the left and right field foul pole boundaries), if it bounces back onto the field (whether it hits a sign or any other object beyond the outfield fence/wall), it’s considered what’s called an “inside the park” home run.
@LuckySmurf2 ай бұрын
I'm not sure if that is correct. "Inside-the-park-home runs" are when the the hitter rounds all four bases without the ball ever leaving the field of play. If the ball clears the outfield wall, while in fair territory, but bounces back inside it's just called a home run. Ballparks usually have a marker on the walls to indicate the line that batted balls needs to clear to be considered a home run.

Originally there was going to be a scene right before the final game against the Yankees where we find out that Rachel Phelps was basically playing a con game the whole time: there never was an offer to move to Miami, she just couldn't afford to field a team unless she got the lowest-paid players around. So she personally scouted out as many people as she could who had genuine talent but some massive flaw holding them back, and made up the story that she wanted them all to lose, in the hopes that having her as a common enemy would inspire them to come together as a team and overcome their flaws in an effort to show her up. This scene got cut before the movie came out because test audiences much preferred having her as an actual villain, and whether or not that was the right choice is a matter of personal opinion. But it does clear up a few oddities, like why she never demoted or traded away any players who were obviously improving, or why Miami would have offered to build a stadium that seats 62,000 spectators when even the largest MLB stadia don't go much above 56,000. (The actual stadium that got built in Miami a few years after this movie can't even seat 38,000.) It also means that everything Rachel says in the locker room scene is absolutely true, she's just saying it in a way that makes her look like a complete asshole, which I kinda love from a storytelling aspect.
@cypher5156 ай бұрын
I do know there was a perception that the more seats you had in the stadium, the more money you could make, because owners once thought there was a limit to what people would pay for tickets. Obviously, owners stopped believing that. But it's telling that Miami's _football_ stadium isn't much bigger than that (65 thousand), and New Oh-Hai-Mark Stadium in Buffalo is going to actually be 62 thousand itself.

To answer your question about the batting order. Each team before the game gives a list of players who will be playing and what the batting order is. Once the 9 batters are set in order the order does not change. You can substitute a batter for someone on the bench. But once that batter has left the game he cant be put back in. The other question. About a ball hitting the scoreboard. Generally yes that would be a home run. Most ballparks have a yellow line on the top of the wall or sometimes across a tall wall. Anything that hits above that yellow line is a home run even if it bounces back on the field for some reason. The foul poles are also in play and hitting one of them counts as a home run as well.

As someone who played catcher from Little League all the way through college, I will confirm that it is the position that takes the absolute most punishment. And yes, there is a LOT of trash talking but sometimes the umpires are really strict about it and cut it off fast. As for who decides what pitch to throw, usually it's the coach/manager who signals to the catcher from the dugout unless you have a catcher that is really experienced and has been around forever. If you really want to see what goes on "behind the scenes" in a baseball game watch Bull Durham. It's another ultra classic baseball comedy!
@johng4825 ай бұрын
7:44 one of the top skills a catcher needs is to prevent bad pitches for going past him, so catchers practice blocking wild pitches all the time. 8:27 I was a catcher when I played and I remember fondly a number of hits at the plate where I managed to hold into the ball for the out. But my favorite memory was in little league (back in the days when we didn’t have the rule mandating we slide into home). A friend was catching for the other team and I was in third. When the ball was hit, I started for home and the ball was thrown there. I heard the base coach yell to slide, but no one had taught me how to do so yet, so I just lowered my shoulder and hit my friend so hard, the ball went flying and we were able to score a second run while her looked for the ball. 14:15 the catcher is the defensive captain, so he’s in charge of the defense. Also, if the catcher doesn’t know what kind of pitch is coming, it’ll be much harder to field and he can communicate with the pitcher more discreetly than the other way around. Often, at least at lower levels, the manager or pitching coach is signaling the catcher what kind of pitch to throw, so he isn’t the one making the decision. 16:06 you’d be amazed how often we fix airplanes with tape. I worked at one of the US3 airlines for a few years and speed tape was our bread and butter on the flight line.
@redpillfreedom66926 ай бұрын
6:02 If a ball in flight touches anything out of play, then the ball itself is out of play even if it richochets back onto the playing field. That scoreboard is behind the outfield wall, so a ball hitting the scoreboard is a home run.

Bob Uecker is a real play by play announcer for the Milwaukee Brewers and he was also a TV actor. Most of the actors in this movie including Charlie Sheen played baseball at some competition level. The batting order is the order you bat in. It can't be changed or it's an out for batting out of order. You can bring in another player to pinch hit. Once the ball goes over the wall or yellow line if it hits something and comes back onto the field still a homerun. The stadium was the old stadium the Brewers played in so not filmed in Cleveland. You will like Major League 2 plus Caddyshack 2
@LuckySmurf2 ай бұрын
@6:38, what Harris is showing is the various substances pitchers can use to doctored the balls to help with the grip / movement (also known as "sticky stuff"). Using substances like those would add more spin to the ball, making it more difficult for hitters when they're batting. Such methods are very much against League rules and measures have been taken to ensure players can't get away with this. Violators are subject to automatic ejection from the game and fined / suspended.

Baseball stuff - the catcher is like a QB for the team on defense, is a single voice to learn the other team's hitters and know how to attack them, as well as knowing his pitchers and what they do well. Their input on the pitch is more of a suggestion, the pitcher can overrule them. It's still a homerun if the ball reenters play; if the ball clears a predetermined height within the foul poles it's a home run. Basically speaking of course. Batting orders can't be changed, but you can substitute someone off the bench in any spot if you also consider where they'd have to play on defense. Sometimes you sub one player in just to hit and replace that person later for defensive reasons.

A book I have called "Nine Sides to the Diamond", devotes a chapter a piece to every position, explains what's expected at each position, and gives tiny bios of famous basemen. It's a cool book. For the catcher, he explains as is done down below in these comments: the catcher is the only one facing the field, and who can see what's going on. So he's the one to direct the pitcher.

Fun fact: The guy who plays the Yankees' main power hitter Clu Haywood is Pete Vuckovich, who actually played in the majors for 12 seasons. But instead of a hitter, Vuckovich was a pitcher who won the Cy Young Award for the American League's top pitcher in 1982.

I know that sometimes the shots are shown backwards, I assume to appease the KZbin rules. It's no big deal, but when it looks like the runner is going from first base to home plate, it's pretty wild.

Lynn is played by Rene Russo, in her film debut. You might recognize her from the Kevin Costner golf classic "Tin Cup"…but more likely you know her as Thor's mom. Klu Heywood ("Handlebar") was played by an actual former MLB player, as was the Yankees relief pitcher, Duke Temple. However, for fun, Heywood was played by Pete Vuckovich (a former pitcher) and Temple by Steve Yeager (a former catcher). It has now been Taylor Swift's entire life time (35 years) since this film came out…and the Indians still haven't won a World Series since 1948. In all of professional sports, they trail only the NFL's Arizona Cardinals (who won the 1947 NFL title [before there were Super Bowls and when the franchise was stil the Chicago Cardinals]) in longest time without a championship. Maybe they need to start worshipping Jobu?

It depends on the field. Some stadiums have a wall that is taller and you have to hit it all the way over, but I've also seen fields that have a scoreboard right above the fence. If it hits the scoreboard and bounces back in it is still a home run 👍🏼

Baseball teams do have captains. In this case, Jake, the catcher, is the captain. The batting order is fixed, you can't adjust it once the game begins.

At 7:35, I think it's both! lol I could be wrong, but I think the guy training with Jake was purposefully throwing bad pitches so that he would be prepared for those bad pitches thrown to him from pitcher in actual games. Also, the catcher will get funny bouncing balls like that thrown from the fielders and/or cutoff men trying to throw someone out at home plate. Repetition and practice to prepare the catcher for all possibilities.

About the question of whether it is a homerun if it hits a sign and bounces back, yes, as long as it hits ABOVE the home run line, then it's a homerun. Adam Dunn of the Arizona Diamondbacks a while back hit the scoreboard in center field. 500+ foot homerun, and you can see the spot where it hit, and it fell back into the field. So yes, a home run Also, about the foreign substances on baseballs: yes, it's illegal to do so, and you'll get suspensions and fines. Pine tar, stick em, and anything really. Guys try, and they get caught. In the 1960s-80s, there was a guy by the name if Gaylord Perry, who was KNOWN for doctoring the ball with substances, but somehow seldom got caught. When you watch his pre pitch routine, his hand and fingers would be touching almost every part of his ballcap, hair, uniform, etc. Guys like him where known as Spit-ballers

The manager submits his starting lineup before every game to the umpire. The manager can and has the ability to put in what they call a pinch hitter. A pinch hitter can go in a bat for one of the starting line up guys. The manager can also put a pinch runner in the game. And yes. If the ball hits the sign and the sign is obstructing the ball from going over the fence then it is a home run. A home run with the bases loaded is called a grand slam.

In baseball, the batting lineup is set at the beginning of the game for both teams and stays that way for the whole game. If a player has to leave the game (perhaps for an injury), his substitute bats in his position in the lineup. Sometimes, a pinch hitter will bat for a player and then a different player will substitute for the replaced player on the field.

Part of this was filmed in Tucson, where I'm from. I was only a kid when this was filmed. I don't know which stadium scene it was, but there was an ad in the newspaper for background extras needed for the audience. But my aunt said it was too hot and she didn't want to be in the sun for hours during filming, so we didn't go. Unfortunately I didn't appear in my first film until 2011, decades after this film came out. I'm glad I did though, because now I'm living the dream, making movies here in Arizona. It's only a minor regret that I wasn't in Major League.

The average MLB Salary in 1989 was 488k in 1989. The league minimum was $68,000 in case anyone was wondering how much Jake made. That's about $175,000 a year in today's money. So yeah, fringe players back then made nothing compared to players today because the TV contracts weren't as valuable, and fans didn't have to pay $20 for a hot dog and a beer!

I graduated HS in 89, and several friends had jobs at the Universal Cineplex at Universal City, so for two summers I saw tons of free movies every weekend. That being said, most were more than forgettable especially ones I would see at the late showing, as I would often nod off. But having seen what was probably hundreds of movies, there were a few diamonds in the rough and Major League was one of those films, as it was just another freebie at the time(that I had no idea was any good). This is easily one of the best sports comedies ever made and it easily sits near the top with the likes of Bad News Bears(OG), Caddyshack, Kingpin, Bring it On, etc. While part 2 wasn't as good as the first, it is more than worth a viewing, as it had its moments so for sure give it a chance if you get the time.

There is a yellow stripe on top of the outfield wall, and two big yellow "foul ball pole " on the foul lines in right and left field. Above the line and inside the poles is a homerun.
@hertbran6 ай бұрын
To answer your question, yes, the batters are in order and the order can't be changed. However, you can have a "pitch hitter" who takes the place of the pitcher in the batting lineup. A lot of thinking goes into the batting order along with righthanded pitcher versus right- or left-handed batter and vis versa.

6:05 As long as the ball goes over the wall in fair territory, or caroms off of a foul pole, without being knocked back by a player or hitting the ground first then it's a home run even if it comes back into the field.

Yes using various substances on a baseball to get a little extra movement on the ball is a real thing. Former MLB Pitcher Gaylord Perry was infamous for doctoring baseballs/throwing spitballs. He pitched for 21 seasons and retired at the age of 45, he was inducted into The Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991.
@erictaylor54626 ай бұрын
14:20 The catcher doesn't decide. He suggests. The catcher needs to know what pitch is coming, so he makes suggestions. The pitcher nods or shakes his head if he agrees. It's done this way as a way for the catcher to learn what pitch is coming, because the pitcher can't communicate this without the batter seeing it.
