Thank you to Johnathan Bailey (and Jeff Goldblum too) for making this promotional tour a lot more bearable! Also, to answer your question at 7:09 Ben: yes, I _do_ hear the people sing, but for some reason they’re only singing songs of angry men and I really wish they’d sing at least a couple songs of joyous women or perhaps content children for a change as one does tend to get a bit bored.

**Do You Hear the People Sing? A Deep Dive into the Legacy of Les Misérables** Les Misérables, the musical that has captured the hearts of millions around the world, offers more than just a spectacular plot and breathtaking performances. It speaks to the core of human nature, explores themes of justice and redemption, and leaves an indelible mark on its audience. But beyond its enduring legacy lies a more divisive question: *do you hear the people sing?* Is Les Mis the greatest musical of all time, or is its legendary status undeserved? While the answer may vary, there’s little doubt that the musical is a cultural phenomenon that deserves continued praise-though with a few nuances that deserve closer attention. Les Misérables: The Greatest Musical of All Time? Les Misérables, based on Victor Hugo's monumental 1862 novel, is often regarded as the greatest musical of all time. This sentiment is not without merit. The musical has been adapted into numerous languages, performed worldwide, and has won countless accolades. From the revolutionary anthem “Do You Hear the People Sing?” to the heartrending “I Dreamed a Dream,” the songs resonate on a global scale. Its emotional depth, powerful themes of social justice, sacrifice, and the desire for redemption are timeless, making it impossible to ignore the social and political relevance it continues to hold. The musical’s ability to transform an almost 1,500-page novel into a coherent, emotionally gripping experience is a testament to the brilliance of the creative team behind it. Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s compositions perfectly align with the storyline, creating musical numbers that never feel out of place. The show’s ability to evoke profound emotional reactions, from tears to elation, has made it a touchstone of musical theater, and its story of struggle and hope remains a universal narrative. The Russell Crowe Singing Controversy One aspect of the musical’s film adaptation that has drawn considerable attention is Russell Crowe’s portrayal of Javert. Crowe, known primarily for his work in action films like *Gladiator* and *A Beautiful Mind*, took on the monumental task of bringing this iconic character to life. However, his performance, especially his singing, has been met with intense criticism. Many viewers have deemed his voice flat, monotonous, and unfit for the stage. The backlash has been harsh, often dismissing Crowe’s interpretation of the character as inferior to his musical counterparts. But this criticism, in my opinion, is misplaced. While Crowe’s voice may not have the technical power of some of his co-stars, he brought a unique intensity and emotional depth to Javert that worked within the context of the film. Javert, as a character, is rigid, consumed by his obsessive pursuit of justice, and Crowe’s more restrained, almost haunting vocal approach embodied that sense of inner turmoil. The performance was not about vocal acrobatics, but about conveying the profound internal conflict of a man who cannot reconcile his values with the world around him. Crowe may not have the best singing voice, but his portrayal of Javert as a man trapped by his own moral absolutism deserves more appreciation. Hugh Jackman’s Overpraised Performance On the flip side, Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Jean Valjean has been widely lauded. Jackman received praise for his acting and singing ability in the role, earning an Academy Award nomination. While Jackman certainly brought a certain charm and emotional gravitas to the role, there’s a strong argument to be made that his singing was far from remarkable. Valjean is a role that demands vocal power and range, and while Jackman certainly has a commanding stage presence, his vocal performance falls short of the expectations set by the role. In particular, Jackman’s rendition of “Bring Him Home,” a pivotal moment in the show, lacks the necessary emotional weight that other performers have brought to the same song. His voice, while serviceable, does not convey the deep sense of prayer and yearning that the song demands. Compare his performance to other renditions of the song, and Jackman’s portrayal feels somewhat lackluster. His acting, on the other hand, is commendable, and he brings a certain humanity to Valjean that resonates emotionally. But in terms of vocal ability, there are other actors who have done more justice to the role. Alfie Boe: The Best Javert When discussing the best person to have ever played Javert, Alfie Boe is the undisputed standout. Boe’s interpretation of Javert is widely regarded as the most compelling and vocally outstanding. As a world-class tenor, Boe brings unparalleled vocal technique to the role, and his performance is filled with nuance and power. Unlike many other Javert portrayals, Boe’s rendition of the character is not just about the external, authoritarian force Javert represents; Boe delves deep into the psychological complexity of the character. His rendition of “Stars” is arguably one of the most moving performances of the entire show, with his vocal acrobatics complementing the intense emotional stakes of the moment. Boe’s voice has the perfect balance of technical prowess and raw emotion, something that Jackman’s and Crowe’s portrayals fall short of. His vocal abilities not only meet but exceed the demands of the role, creating an unforgettable version of Javert that remains etched in the memories of audiences worldwide. Conclusion: The People Are Singing In the end, the question “Do you hear the people sing?” is more than just a literal one. It’s a question about how we hear the voices of characters like Valjean, Javert, Fantine, and others as they fight for their rights, their freedom, and their lives. Les Misérables is a musical that demands to be heard, not just in terms of the songs, but in the emotional weight and historical context behind them. While certain performances in the 2012 film adaptation, such as Russell Crowe’s portrayal of Javert, deserve more respect, and others, like Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Valjean, have been overhyped, Les Mis continues to stand as a testament to the power of musical theater. Alfie Boe’s interpretation of Javert remains the pinnacle of vocal and emotional depth, but the legacy of Les Misérables as a musical and as a social statement will continue to endure. And yes, the people are singing, whether it’s through the voices of legendary performers or the collective spirit of those who’ve come to love this iconic work.
