@@Mr.H-Literature Well, in fact the line is lame and out of place. Takes away all of your video's worth.

If you're moving along the natural progression to Beowulf, I've that in there alongside a whole unit on Anglo-Saxon literature. Just go to my channel and look in 12 Grade.

"Remember in Anglo-Saxon times, people would often live til about 27 on average" - this is not true. The average life expectancy in that era was brought way way down by infant mortality rates. If a person lived past infancy, they were likely to make it to adulthood. And if a person made it to adulthood healthy they were likely to live full lifespans. Plagues and famines and wars could affect this, obviously, but most people lived til about 50-60.

That's a fair criticism -- point taken. As a high school English teacher, I was just trying to provide the class with a little context and didn't do much more than quote the average life expectancy, rather than stop and think about the implications. Thanks for the feedback.

The translation is by Anne Stafford. It's part of a high school English textbook curriculum. Here's a link to the PDF version: www.neshaminy.org/site/handlers/filedownload.ashx?moduleinstanceid=6499&dataid=20481&FileName=wife%20lament.pdf
