Wow. That is an amazing performance for something, homemade, that even can be folded down.

G’day Andrew. I remembered you spoke about ground planning. I have a 700-2700 MHz LPDA antenna. I had trouble getting it going again after a lightning storm. I pulled it apart to have a look at it and saw it wasn’t grounded. Once I did a closed loop and put it back together it worked better than when I bought it. I also reduced the cable length and crimped an SMA connector and it worked better than the day I bought it. Thanks for your expertise old mate.

andrew mcneil hi Mr Andrew. Thanks for all videos. I have a question please answer. I have an cheap panel antenna and it was not isolated between poles. Ground and signal were short circuit. Does it effect the signal quality and signal power? What is the important thing about isolation between poles? Thanks for now...(i isolated them witouth harming antenna design)
@timplatts11996 жыл бұрын
Could you simply use fewer panels to cut down on stitching. Even down to 2 if possible. Still use the fabric as a template. Perhaps reuse the original perimeter fabric as a tape edge with the ferrules still attached. Would be good to compare with this properly built one. Keep up to good work.
@wj0006 жыл бұрын
@ Eyüp A. I heard that short between ground and signal in pannel antennas is a good thing, because it gives some protection to the radio. Without short excess electric charges can accumulate on the panel, especially during thunder strike and damage the radio. I noticed that more expensive antennas usually are shorted.

The umbrella reflects alot (almost all) of the microwaves, since the holes are all smaller than ~1 cm which is (about) how large the wave is, the wave bounces off (almost) as well as solid metal.

There is a very simple equation that allow you to find the full diameter of a sphere... if you use it you can much better situate the point of maximum gain ... increasing even more your signal strength...

What a fine work Andy. Great portable solution, Recently I have been thinking a lot of this combinations, I have used a 45CM portable camping dish, the return was also good with a 5GHZ cantenna. I would really be interesting to know how it would perform outside, I guess it would be over 100 access points. Thanks a lot Andy for the video.

Center shaft could be made from an aluminum arrow body. Reflector could be made from Faraday Fabric, as it should be easier to cut/sew & fold up neater. The radial support rods will shadow very little signal, as the greatest signal will come from the parimeter of the parabolic reflector.
@OldGamerNoob6 жыл бұрын
It's interesting that there were no results in the scan with low signal strength. I'm betting it has to do with the slight upward angle shooting over the head of any access point farther than a certain range. I wonder how many would show up if it were completely horizontal.

Love your video, and great job on the antenna, Andrew. You certainly have more patience than I do. Mine's not nearly as portable, but years ago ('08, '09?) I purchased a metal snow disk, then mounted a wifi usb adapter in the focal point. Over the years, and through numerous dongle upgrades, Ii's come in handy in providing us with an alternative network connection when the cable's goes down. I live on a hill at appx. 100' above the average terrain, and today results show signal of literally hundreds of AP's, with good number of them open, and publicly accessible. Google: snow disk, flexible flyer, Round Metal Snow Sled.

Andrew, I always enjoy your wifi antenna videos. You make some beautiful antennas. I couldn't help but comment here as I made what was was called a stressed-parabola antenna about 35 years ago to get a 2.4 GHz "premium" station that was new here in El Paso and I built this stressed-parabola as best I could, from plans from a radio amateur book. It turned out beautiful as can be seen in one of my videos where I show pictures of it but it did not work worth a hoot. After lots and lots of tinkering, I finally broke down and cut a template of a true parabola from cardboard and compared it to the shape of my antenna only to find the stressed-parabola was not a parabola at all. Like yourself, I spent hours sewing it together with small wire instead of thread. Just wondering if you know if the shape of your umbrella-parabola is actually a parabola. I think I remember going for a focal length to diameter ratio of around 0.6 (hoping to get lots of gain) which made my antenna pretty "flat" and a focal point way our front. Your idea of a shorter F/D ratio is probably a better idea. Actually, back at the time of my antenna, a snow dish (used to slide down snow covered hills) worked better than any other reflector I had at the time. You can see the pictures of my antenna at about 6:50 in this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKu8eneCeZ2knaM Keep up the good work and stay safe.
@joshuacoburn81404 жыл бұрын
This is very very cool! Thanks for sharing! You might try tinkering with it by placing the transceiver antenna directly in the junction of the graduated cone waveguide, and the cylindrical portion of the waveguide, and you may get slightly better results by increasing the distance between the transceiver waveguide assembly and the parabola, and the cone portion of the waveguide might be modified by allowing for the angle of the cone portion to match the angle of the strongest rf focal point based upon it's distance from the parabola. It appears that you may get better results widening the angle of the cone slightly, and increasing the distance from the parabola, depending on how you choose to tune it. Excellent work on this! I really enjoyed your video! God bless you and your family. Keep studying, and keep tinkering! :*)

Great project. U know what would make it even cooler? Get some umbrella fabric. Sew those triangular patterns together. And sew end caps to the edges. But a bigger kind of end cap that would fit over the end caps already on the antenna. Then u could also use this umbrella as a funcional umbrella and therefore have a valid excuse for carrying it everywhere with you . (The real reason being not for preventing u from getting wet, but for the sake of science)
