This is a terrific show. I'd never seen or even heard of it before, so it was a pleasure to discover for the first time. Thanks, Dave, this is a great find!

I have always loved this program. It is of great historical importance. It is fantastic that many loyal, and great supporters of the channel had not seen it before.

I watched that game in Ottawa Canada at the home of a friend whose family had that relatively rare possession, a color tv. One interesting thing to me: I've seen numerous people who have said that the first game wasn't actually called the Super Bowl, but there are numerous times in this film where we see and hear it referred to as that.

Great vid, Dave!! The Chiefs of the 60s not only defeated my dad's Broncos routinely, they beat them by large margins. So, he was not a Chiefs fan at all. I'll stop short of saying Dad hated them, but he hated watching his boys get clobbered all the time. So, the dislike was intense. But he cheered for KC in this game, and for the Raiders (disliked in much the same way) in SB II; the only two times he ever rooted for those two. THAT was how important an AFL win was to fans of the league. When the Jets finally turned the trick in SB III. He was thrilled. RIP Pop!!

This may be the best documentary that has been done about what we now know as Super Bowl I. There is one bald-faced lie in this, but I will leave it to others to reveal it.

I saw the whole game of both networks:NBC live and CBS on tape almost three months later.CBS put the game on a Saturday afternoon after a technicians strike kept them from airing the Masters. They decided very late in the week to do so,so there wasn't much fanfare. At the time,no one thought that the game would be looked upon as being historic.Indeed,Sports Illustrated's Tex Maule would write after the NFL Championship Game each year:"The pro football championship was decided.................... He stopped doing so after the Jets win.

8:00 - Pete wanted to name the game "The Pro Bowl". Rozelle hated the word "Super", thinking it was a corny title. Also the original name "AFL- NFL World Championship Game" was merely a working title, something to use until a better name came along. The following came from Michael MacCambridge's book "America's Game": Hunt sent a letter to Rozelle, dated July 25, 1966, in which he stressed the need to come up with a title game name. "If possible, I believe we should 'coin a phrase' for the championship game .... I have kiddingly called it the 'Super Bowl', which obviously can be approved upon." Rozelle agreed there was room for improvement. Pete wasn't merely unenthusiastic about the term; he actively disliked it. League publicity director Don Weiss recalled that Rozelle "just didn't like the word 'super'. Pete was a pretty regular person, but he was a stickler on words and grammar, and 'super' was not his idea of a good word. He thought 'super' was a word like 'neat' or 'gee whiz'. It had no sophistication." Unable to find a novel or catchy name that they were happy with, the committee announced that the game would be called "The AFL-NFL World Championship Game". Rozelle would have liked to called the game "The Pro Bowl", but of course, that title was already taken by the league's postseason All-Star game. When the game had been speculated about for years, it was often called a "World Series of Football", which obviously wouldn't work. Yet even before the season started, Hunt's pet term had taken on its own momentum. Headline writers, commentators, and players alike were using the term. And by January 1967 it was becoming clear that it didn't matter what the leagues tried to call the game, because "Super Bowl" had already caught on. Networks had taken to referring to the day of the game as "Super Sunday". And two weeks later in Los Angeles, on the morning of the big game, an NFL Films crew member could be heard giving a sound cue, "Super Bowl, real one", before shooting the first reel of pregame footage at the Coliseum.

This game turned on Dawson's early 2nd half interception. Had he eaten the ball the way he said he should have, the game could've turned out to be entirely different. The Packers were a great team, there is no doubting or debating that. But the Chiefs were a great team too and simply didn't play their best game in that 2nd half. I wasn't at the game, but saw it on TV and was very sad the way it ended. But it didn't diminish my love for the Chiefs and in coming seasons my fan allegiance grew stronger to the point of being a Huddle Club member (kids 8-14 who got in with a punch-card for $1.50 per game and then sat in a corner of old Municipal Stadium), then a few seasons later being a season ticket holder at Arrowhead Stadium. And yes, I'm one of those who didn't want the merger. I loved the AFL and HATED the NFL! Long Live the AFL!!!
