Dogs are a reflection of their owners. Schnauzers are stubborn, but once you find the thing that a dog will do anything for (usually food or a specific toy) any dog can be a genius.

Pretty much. Ours was walked and treated and played with on leash for 6mths, then played with in fenced in areas with us leading him running around off leash with running, and playing together to strengthen bond. We gradually loosened up on this as he got older when we noticed our relationship was bonded where he would keep up with us and come back when called. My wife and I would seperate by a few feet and grew distance over time, practicing calling him back and forth in turn. We use to take his favourite toy, kibble, and sticks with us to switch it up with incentives using the word "come". We found play was his favorite incentive, food his second. Over time, my wife plays with him more, so he has bonded more closely to her, but we are all very happy together. Also, if your dog is being bad, they probably aren't getting the excercise, play or food or sleep they need. It is up to each person to learn which it is and solve that problem for their dog. Usually it's play and excercise unless the dog is often outside playing. An excercised dog listens to his/her owner rather than looking for something else to do.

Ah! This reminds me of my miniature schnazuer! We live on a farm and she hates being stuck inside. When she gets let outside, theres always a bath to follow :) BEST dogs around.

Hi, Kafka cannot be off-leash in any street or parks that have squirrels, cats, or other furry animals. His prey drive is too strong and he will go hunting for 45-60 min. On other parks he is off leash and behaves perfectly, never losing me. The secret is to start now, and go out every day. When your schanuzer is 9 months old to a year, he will start getting this idea that you and him are a team and not to be separated.

It took my parent's mini a good 2 or 3 years to stop running away. Now she walks better off the leash than on it. At 5 months old I walked my mini through a park without his leash, but I had treats in my pocket, he knew that, and there was no one else around. You definitely have to trust the dog before you take the leash off, when they're still bouncy and erratic it's too early, their attention span is still too short
