I can literally recite 10-15 minutes at a time from this recording! My brother and I can go back and forth through the dialogue! This was such a huge part of my childhood. I used to joke with my mom that almost no situation in life couldn’t be improved or elucidated with a quote from Wind in the willows - with Kenneth Williams’s inflection!

Kenneth Williams was a national treasure. A very funny man with a myriad of funny voices. From Hancock's Half Hour to Round The Horne and many other roles, he was a one of. He and Hugh Padick, as Jules & Sandy, two homosexual actors playing two out of work homosexual actors in Round The Horne, did more to make homosexuality acceptable than gay pride have ever done. As a hetroxexual man, I now listen to the programs and get lots of the jokes which meant little or nothing back in the sixties. RIP Ken.

I bought a pack of Roald Dahl audiobooks (which were also excellent) at Goodwill for a dollar, and tape 1 of this series was in there by mistake. It quickly became my favorite tape, but I only had part 1, so over TWELVE YEARS passed between *"...whistling a merry tune"* and *"It was a grave luncheon for Rat..."* while I searched the internet for the rest! Thank you so much for putting it all together in one convenient place!

I can't believe I found this, it makes me so happy! I've been living in NZ for the past 30 years but listening to this is a treasured memory of growing up in the UK, spring cleaning my room on a Sunday afternoon along with the Mole 😄 Thank you so much!

I used to listen to this audiobook on tape cassette in bed at night when I was little (it had same cover as shown here too). Kenneth Williams is magic 👌🏻 I also had audio cassettes produced by the BBC of Kenneth narrating Will o’the Wisp

I remember mine was from waldenbooks and the cassette J-card was like a turquoise color with white block letters saying "Wind in the Willows" .... I think it was a two or three cassette set .... if anybody recognizes what I'm talkin about , please help me identify ... I don't know if this is the same narrator/set THANKYOU

Thanks so much for this. It was the soundtrack to my early childhood. Parent bought it for me one Christmas and I listened to it every night for years. Now I can share it with my 6 year old. Delightful story and the best of all the audio versions. .

The ONLY narration! We had this exact cassette when I was younger and Kenneth Williams remains my favourite & only possible narrator for this wonderful story. I'm fairly sure my brother & I can still recite parts of this verbatim! A real joy to hear again.

Got here from an Eleanor Morton video which is Not Safe For Work but absolutely hilarious ("Did Kenneth Grahame get the idea for Wind In The Willows from a drunk guy at the Pub?"). This is the version I grew up with and it definitely brings back some happy childhood memories. Thanks for sharing it.

I love listening to Kenneth William's voice and to have him reading "Wind in the Willows" is double the pleasure; I wish that during his lifetime he had been aware of how much he was appreciated, how much laughter he brought, which is priceless. To anyone reading this, if you enjoy watching/listening to Kenneth Williams he did the voiceover to the original "Willo the Wisp" (a childrens programme) which he brings to a whole different level. Richard Briers also voiced an audiobook of "Wind in the Willows" who's voice I also love.🌹

Never thought about it as a child, but it just occured to me that it's slightly strange that some animals have houses and waistcoats and picnics, while the horse is still a horse and fish are still fish

Great shame that the Barge woman and the gypsy were missed out, not to mention 2 chapters.... The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Wayfarer's All. They probably thought that it held up the narrative!
@lewiscarty55173 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but I think that it would have been an extra couple more cassettes and would cost a lot more money at the time of its release, but I had the cassette myself as a child and listening to this again has really brought back the nostalgia of having the cassette and it’s still great to hear the great Kenneth Williams read this.
